To connect a standard DUALSHOCK 4 to a PS4 for the first time, turn on the console, connect the controller with a compatible USB cable, and press the PS button. After it pairs, you can unplug the cable and play wirelessly. Sony’s PS4-console instructions use USB for registration; holding SHARE and PS is for pairing the controller with supported non-console devices.
Pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with your PS4
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the console with its included USB cable or another compatible USB cable. If buying a cable, check that it fits the controller and supports data; the cited instructions do not establish that every charging-only cable will work for pairing. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support instructions.
- If the controller is off, press the PS button.
- Check for the light bar to blink and a player indicator to light. Those are the signs Sony describes for a successful connection.
- Once the controller has sufficient charge, unplug the USB cable and use it wirelessly.
Does a PS4 controller pair over Bluetooth without a cable?
For the standard DUALSHOCK 4 console setup, Sony’s published pairing procedure starts with a USB connection. Bluetooth is used for wireless play after the controller has been registered with the PS4. The cable is therefore needed for the documented initial console pairing or when reconnecting the controller, but it does not need to remain attached for wireless play.

What does holding SHARE and PS do?
Holding SHARE and PS puts a DUALSHOCK 4 into Bluetooth discovery for supported devices such as a computer or mobile device. It is not Sony’s standard procedure for registering the controller with a PS4. For those other devices, follow Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 instructions for PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Reconnect a controller or move it to another PS4
A DUALSHOCK 4 pairs with one console at a time. If you have used it with another PS4, connect it to the console you want to use with USB and press PS to pair it again. Sony says a PS4 can connect up to four controllers at once; this is the manufacturer’s stated limit, not a recommendation to use any particular controller model.

If the PS4 does not recognize the controller
- Check the cable and connection. Make sure the cable fits the controller and is compatible with the pairing procedure, then reconnect it to the PS4 and press PS.
- Check controller compatibility. Bluetooth support alone does not establish that another brand’s controller works with PS4. Check the specific model’s PS4 compatibility information; Sony’s support pages do not provide a model-by-model list for third-party controllers.
- Restart the console. For Bluetooth connection errors, Sony recommends checking compatibility, trying another compatible Bluetooth device if available, and restarting the PS4. See Sony’s CE-30993-4 guidance.
- Reset the controller. Sony recommends resetting the DUALSHOCK 4 if console pairing fails. Then connect it to the PS4 by USB and press PS to pair again. A reset or restart may not resolve every fault.
- Get support if it still fails. If those steps do not resolve the problem, use Sony’s controller troubleshooting and repair support.
