1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 4 can host a small, always-on data service without being converted into a conventional Linux PC. In a September 2026 build report, Kerem Kalyoncu describes running Termux, Python 3.12, OpenSSH and tmux on the phone, and measuring about 1.2 watts at the wall with a digital power meter. The service, Maritime Watch, turns weather, AIS and official notices into a decision aid for small boats along the Turkish coast. The power figure and implementation details are the author’s report, not an independently replicated test.
What the Note 4 was actually running
The project used Android 6 on a Galaxy Note 4 with Termux and Python, rather than replacing Android with a standalone Linux distribution. Termux describes itself as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment; it provides packages such as Python and OpenSSH. That means this is Linux userspace tooling running on Android, not a phone flashed with a desktop-style Linux operating system.

Kalyoncu’s article reports Python 3.12, OpenSSH for remote access and tmux to keep terminal work running in sessions. The repository documents its deployment on the Note 4 with Android 6, Termux and Python 3.8. Those versions differ because the article and project repository describe separate points in an evolving setup; they should not be read as one guaranteed, fixed software image.

What Maritime Watch does—and does not do
Maritime Watch is a rule-based decision aid for small boats in Turkish coastal waters. It collects forecast information, AIS vessel data and official notices, then produces structured outputs, a map and notifications. The practical question it tries to help a skipper consider is whether conditions appear suitable for going out, and for how long.
Its repository describes guidance for boats up to 8 metres. In the documented project rules, gusts of 22 knots and waves of 1.25 metres are among the thresholds that can trigger a “not suitable” result. These are project-configured thresholds, not universal nautical limits, a regulator’s standard, or a substitute for a skipper’s assessment of the vessel, crew, route and conditions.
The repository explicitly says the system is not an official warning or rescue service. Its English summary says: “Not an official warning service: in an emergency call 158 or use VHF Channel 16.” Do not rely on a phone-hosted dashboard or notification as an emergency channel or as clearance to sail. The project places the decision with the person on the boat.
How the reported 1.2-watt figure was measured
Kalyoncu says a digital power meter at the wall showed roughly 1.2 W for the running phone and setup. That is a useful reported result for this particular build, but the article does not specify the meter model, measurement duration, adapter, network conditions or battery state. No independent test in the cited sources reproduces the reading, so it should not be treated as a general power draw for Note 4 phones or for other workloads.

The author also reports reducing current from about 118 mA to about 45 mA after changing the Telegram listener. The implementation used Telegram getUpdates long polling with a 20-second timeout rather than checking every 1.5 seconds. The article attributes the lower activity to fewer repeated connections and TLS handshakes. These are the author’s measurements and explanation for that bot workload, not a guaranteed saving from long polling in every application.
Data gaps are a safety issue, not just a software bug
The repository says a failed input source should result in missing data or a “no data” outcome, rather than publishing sample or test values as though they were current. That is a sound boundary for any tool whose output might influence a trip: a blank or unavailable reading is safer than a plausible but fabricated one.
Geographic coverage also matters. Maritime Watch’s AIS data does not cover the Bosphorus and Dardanelles themselves. The project warns against interpreting absent coverage as zero vessels. A map without AIS points in those straits cannot establish that there is no traffic there.
Forecast freshness, source availability, notification delivery and internet connectivity can all affect what a user sees. A phone server can make information accessible, but it cannot eliminate delays or outages in the underlying sources or the network. Treat the output as one input to a decision, and check authoritative and directly available information before a voyage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why use an old phone, and what to check first
For someone who already owns a suitable handset, reusing it can avoid buying another host. Kalyoncu also describes the phone’s built-in battery as backup during a power interruption. Neither point establishes how long this particular installation will operate unplugged, and an aging battery may have reduced capacity or present reliability concerns.
Before choosing a retired phone as a continuous host, evaluate the whole setup rather than comparing headline wattage alone:
- Measure wall power with the intended workload and network connection, using the same meter and conditions when comparing devices.
- Check whether Wi-Fi or another network connection reaches the deployment location reliably, and whether the service remains useful during an internet outage.
- Assess battery health and backup behavior; do not assume an old battery will provide dependable runtime.
- Confirm the operating system, packages and remote-access configuration can be maintained and secured.
- Check required ports, peripherals and physical placement, then consider the consequences of a host or source failure.
The cited build did not test an alternative host under matching conditions, so its 1.2 W report does not prove that an old phone is more efficient or reliable than a single-board computer or another small server.

Note 4 Linux support depends on the model variant. The postmarketOS device page describes an Exynos Note 4 port with flashing, USB networking, battery reporting and USB OTG listed as working, while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are listed as broken in that documented status. It distinguishes Snapdragon variants, so those notes should not be generalized to every Note 4.
That port information is separate from Maritime Watch’s Android-and-Termux deployment: the project did not use postmarketOS. Anyone considering a flashed Linux route should check the exact model and the current feature status before assuming networking or peripherals will work. The documented compatibility page is postmarketOS’s Galaxy Note 4 device page.
