Configure an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 in the Xbox Accessories app: create or edit a profile, map controls such as paddles, adjust thumbstick curves, and save the setup to one of the controller’s three custom slots. Use the controller’s Profile button to switch slots. Stick tension and thumbstick shape are physical adjustments, not app settings.
What you need to know about Series 2 profiles
This guide is for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Xbox lists button mapping and profile configuration in Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. Although the controller can connect to other devices, that does not mean the full profile-configuration feature set is available on mobile or every connected device. See the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 product page for the model’s listed features.

The controller holds up to three custom profiles as well as a default profile. Custom profiles occupy Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3; the Profile button on the controller selects among them. Xbox also describes holding the Profile button for several seconds to return to the default mode, which removes custom remapping and disables the paddles. The product’s current profile and customization details are also listed by Xbox Design Lab.

- Connect and power on the controller. On Windows, use the connection method required for the feature you are configuring. Xbox’s keyboard-mapping walkthrough specifies USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for that workflow.
- Open Xbox Accessories and choose Configure. Create a new profile or select an existing profile to edit. App wording can change, so follow the labels displayed in your version.
- Select a control and assign its action. Choose the button or paddle to change, then select the input or mapping you want. Xbox documents button mapping and deadzone options for the controller.
- Adjust the thumbsticks or triggers if needed. Change sensitivity curves and available deadzone settings in the app. These software adjustments are separate from changing stick tension or swapping a physical thumbstick.
- Finish the configuration and assign it to a slot. Save or finish the profile in the app, and make sure it is assigned to Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3.
- Test it in the intended game. Check that each mapping behaves as expected before relying on it. Game-specific controls can affect how a remapped input feels or functions; keyboard mappings in particular depend on game support.
For the documented app flow and the connection requirement for keyboard mapping, see Xbox Wire’s Keyboard Button Mapping for Xbox Controllers. That walkthrough covers keyboard mapping, so it should not be read as a guarantee that every app screen or label is unchanged.

Choose paddle mappings that fit the game
Paddles let you trigger an assigned input without moving a thumb from a stick. Map an action you often need while aiming or moving, rather than assigning paddles simply because they are available. Xbox Wire gives A as one possible choice: “Mapping a paddle to ‘A’ is usually a safe bet (‘jump’ in most FPS or action games).” That is an example, not a universal recommendation.
- Start with one paddle if the layout feels unfamiliar. Learn its reach and response before adding more assignments.
- Choose a game-relevant action. Jump can be useful in some action and FPS games; another game or player may benefit from a different input.
- Check the in-game result. Confirm the assigned action works in the game and does not conflict with its own control settings.
Xbox’s broader recommendations for paddle and control choices appear in its Elite Series 2 guidance.
Thumbstick curves and physical stick changes are different
Use Xbox Accessories for sensitivity curves and for swapping left- and right-stick inputs. Change the controller itself when you want a different physical feel: the included tool adjusts stick tension, and interchangeable thumbsticks let you try different shapes. Xbox lists three stick-tension settings for the Series 2; tension and stick shape are not curve settings in the app.

| Adjustment | Where it is changed | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbstick sensitivity curve | Xbox Accessories app | How stick movement is translated into input response. |
| Stick deadzone | Xbox Accessories app | The deadzone setting for the control. |
| Left/right stick input swap | Xbox Accessories app | Which stick input is assigned to the left or right stick. |
| Stick tension | Physical adjustment with the included tool | The feel of stick resistance; Xbox lists three tension settings. |
| Thumbstick shape | Physical swap using an interchangeable thumbstick | The stick’s physical height or shape under your thumb. |
Xbox suggests more tension or a taller right stick as options for players who tend to overshoot and want more controlled adjustments. For movement, an “Instant” left-stick curve may suit some action-game situations, while stealth movement may call for slower, more gradual nudges. These are preference-based examples, not tested settings that will work best for everyone.

Set curves and trigger travel for the task
Choose a profile around the control task rather than looking for one best configuration. Xbox describes quicker stick response and shorter trigger travel as possibilities for some shooters; gradual trigger pressure may be more appropriate for racing or other games that benefit from measured input. The controller has three trigger-depth levels, and the app provides trigger-deadzone adjustment. Try a setting in the game itself and change it if the response is too abrupt or too slow.

Once custom profiles are saved to slots, press the controller’s Profile button to cycle to the slot you want. Use the profile indicator to confirm the selected slot. To return to the default mode described by Xbox, hold the Profile button for several seconds; custom remapping is removed in that mode and paddles are disabled. If a control does not behave as expected, check both the selected profile and the game’s own control settings.
