How Monster Hunter Rise Multiplayer Works: Co-op, Quests, and Cross-Play

To hunt together in Monster Hunter Rise, take a Hub Quest—not a Village Quest—and meet in the same multiplayer lobby. Parties support up to four hunters. Cross-play depends on the specific platform editions: Capcom confirms PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 players can play together, but its available manuals do not establish a complete compatibility list for every platform.

How does multiplayer work in Monster Hunter Rise?

Multiplayer revolves around Hub Quests. Create or join a lobby, have everyone accept the same eligible Hub Quest, then hunt together. A lobby can hold up to four players, according to Capcom’s Switch manual, PlayStation manual, and Steam manual.

The lobby is the shared gathering space; quest eligibility determines whether you can actually play together. Being in the same lobby does not make every quest a co-op quest.

Can you play Village Quests with friends?

No. Village Quests are solo-only, even if you are in a multiplayer lobby. Capcom’s Switch manual says Village Quests can be accepted at the Lobby counter but cannot be played with other players. For multiplayer hunts, accept Hub Quests at the Gathering Hub. In Sunbreak, use the quest counter at Elgado Outpost for its Hub Quests.

Monster Hunter Rise - Nintendo Switch Standard Edition
  • The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
  • The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
  • New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
  • In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
  • Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!

How to join friends for a Hub Quest

  1. Choose the same online or local-play option. On Switch, online lobby options are accessed through the Courier/Senri flow; for local wireless, select Play Locally. Other platforms have their own menu labels, so the Switch path does not apply universally.
  2. Create or find a lobby. Depending on platform and interface, you can search for a lobby, use friends or a lobby ID, or find one through available conditions or Hunter Connect options.
  3. Accept the same Hub Quest. Quest participation happens through Hub Quests, not Village Quests. Keep the party within the four-player lobby limit.
  4. Use a Join Request for a drop-in hunt, if appropriate. The host can send a Join Request while posting an eligible Hub Quest or after it has started. Other hunters can search for an eligible quest and join while it is underway. Join Requests do not work for Village Quests; Capcom’s Switch manual also excludes local multiplayer.

Online lobby or local wireless on Switch?

Option Setup Where it works Join Requests
Online multiplayer Internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online membership Online lobby; accept Hub Quests together Available for eligible Hub Quests
Local wireless Each player needs a Nintendo Switch and a copy of Monster Hunter Rise; internet service is not the local-play requirement Choose Play Locally and create or find a lobby Unavailable for local multiplayer

These requirements are specific to Switch. Capcom Support also describes multiplayer access for that platform in its Nintendo Switch multiplayer instructions.

Does Monster Hunter Rise have cross-play?

Do not assume that friends on different platform editions can join the same hunt. Capcom’s PlayStation manual expressly says PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 players can play together. The official materials cited here do not establish a complete cross-play matrix covering every combination of Switch, Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox editions. Check the manual for the exact releases your group owns; absent confirmation, plan to use the same platform edition.

Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together; it is different from cross-save, which concerns carrying progress between platforms. The evidence cited here addresses multiplayer compatibility, not a universal cross-save arrangement.

Platform requirements and version matching

  • Switch online: Nintendo Switch Online is required for online multiplayer. Local wireless is a separate option, and each local player needs their own Switch and game copy. These requirements are documented in Capcom’s Switch manual.
  • PlayStation online: Capcom’s PlayStation manual lists an internet connection, PSN sign-in, and PlayStation Plus membership for online multiplayer. It confirms play between PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 users.
  • Steam online: Capcom’s Steam manual calls for a network connection and Steam sign-in.
  • Same software version: Capcom requires participants to use the same game version. Install the current update on each player’s system before troubleshooting a failed lobby connection. See Capcom’s PlayStation online data access instructions and the platform manuals for multiplayer details.

Subscription terms and platform compatibility can change. For current platform-specific instructions, consult Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise support and manuals.
