For an Android handheld, Steam Input controls are configured as part of a Steam Link stream from a PC—not as a universal native Android feature. Pair Steam Link with a PC running Steam, then use a compatible controller or Steam Link’s on-screen controls. Built-in handheld controls are not verified for every model, so check the exact device before assuming they will work.
What this setup does—and does not—cover
Steam Link for Android streams games from a PC running Steam. For the documented setup, the Android device and host PC must be on the same network. Steam’s Android support guidance does not establish that Steam Input works natively across Android gaming handhelds or that every integrated handheld controller is compatible. These steps cover controls while streaming PC Steam games through Steam Link.

Set up Steam Link streaming
- Prepare the PC. Start the host PC, launch Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the handheld. Put the Android device and PC on the same network. Steam recommends a 5 GHz wireless router.
- Pair in Steam Link. Install and open Steam Link on Android, then follow the app’s on-screen pairing instructions to connect to the PC. See Steam Support’s Android setup guidance.
Choose and configure your controls
Use a physical controller
Steam lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, Sony DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, and Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported options for Steam Link Android. The Android 9.0 requirement applies to the listed DualShock 4 support. Steam also cautions that other input devices may work without being officially supported; that is not a guarantee for any particular handheld’s built-in controls. Consult Steam’s controller guidance and verify the exact device, controller, and connection method.
Use Steam Link touch controls
Steam Support says that touch controls are automatically available when Steam Link launches without a controller. During a stream, open the ellipsis menu in the upper-left corner to change mouse mode or show, hide, and arrange the on-screen controls. Steam’s touch-controls instructions describe these in-session options.

No input while streaming
If the game picture appears but controller input does not reach the PC, check Steam Link’s Input Streaming setting:
- Open Settings in Steam Link.
- Go to Streaming.
- Open Advanced Options.
- Enable Input Streaming.
This is Steam’s documented troubleshooting path for missing input. If the problem remains, confirm that the controller itself is supported or working with the Android device; the support pages do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for handheld models. How to judge compatibility before relying on a handheld’s controls
- Streaming or native Android play: The steps here apply to streaming PC Steam games through Steam Link. They do not establish how a handheld’s controls behave in native Android games.
- Named or unlisted controller: A controller on Steam’s named list has explicit support in that guidance. An unlisted input device may work, but Steam does not promise that it will.
- Exact device and Android version: Check the handheld model and connection type, and observe stated OS requirements. Steam’s listed DualShock 4 support specifies Android 9.0 or newer; the cited pages do not confirm built-in controls across Android handhelds.
A Steam Community guide by slouken, published August 23, 2018, discusses touch-layout editing, per-game configurations, action sets, touchpad areas, and gyro use.
