SRS can receive a live feed from FFmpeg or OBS, but an SRS ingest URL is not YouTube’s destination. A continuous relay has distinct pieces: a publisher sends to SRS, SRS forwards to the YouTube URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and the processes and network must stay available. The SRS examples documented by the project do not establish a complete, release-specific YouTube forwarding configuration, so verify the forwarding syntax against the exact SRS release you deploy rather than guessing at a copy-and-paste config.
Understand the SRS-to-YouTube path
In a relay design, the flow is:
- Source: FFmpeg or OBS encodes the video and publishes it to SRS.
- SRS: SRS receives that feed and forwards it onward.
- YouTube: YouTube Live Control Room supplies the separate ingest URL and stream key used for the destination.
The SRS example URL rtmp://localhost/live/livestream is an example of publishing into SRS; it is not a YouTube ingest endpoint. SRS’s archived v5 documentation also shows a minimal start command, ./objs/srs -c conf/rtmp.conf, and a Docker launch example. Those demonstrate basic SRS operation, not a complete YouTube relay. See the SRS v5 RTMP documentation and the SRS Docker getting-started guide.

Before choosing this topology, decide whether you need SRS between the publisher and YouTube. If not, an encoder can publish directly to YouTube, avoiding a relay component. If SRS is needed, confirm how the deployed release handles forwarding, TLS, codec support and retries. Do not combine the local SRS URL and YouTube key by guesswork.

Version matters. The SRS v5 RTMP page is marked archived, while the v7 RTMP page is marked unstable. The Docker guide’s ossrs/srs:5 example illustrates a launch method; it does not, by itself, establish which release is the right production choice. Review current SRS project release guidance, pin the version you select, and confirm its forwarding configuration before deployment.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
The SRS v7 RTMP documentation describes an idle-publisher timeout and warns that it conflicts with forwarding. Avoid enabling idle-kick behavior without understanding how it interacts with your relay. The official SRS build guidance covers running with a config file, checking status and logs, and publishing with FFmpeg or OBS, but the exact YouTube forwarding directives depend on the release and are not established by the basic examples.
Get the YouTube destination and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube recommends RTMPS; if the control room first displays an RTMP endpoint, follow its instructions to reveal the RTMPS URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Enter the URL and key in the YouTube destination fields of the encoder or relay configuration for your chosen topology. Keep them separate from the SRS local ingest URL.
- Treat the key as a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or publicly shared configuration. YouTube describes it as the credential/address that lets an encoder send the feed for acceptance by YouTube. See YouTube’s stream management guidance.
The local SRS publishing address and YouTube destination are different endpoints. The correct forwarding directive and destination construction are release-specific; check the documentation for the exact SRS version you run.

Set encoder parameters for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s supported ingest options do not prove that every SRS build or every relay path supports the same codecs end to end. Confirm compatibility across the encoder, SRS and destination before going live. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 video | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Use the relevant codec-specific YouTube table and test with the actual source. |
| 1080p, 60 fps, H.264 video | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | Use only if the source and full relay path can sustain the chosen frame rate and bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | Set this in the encoder, and verify the published output. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps for stereo; 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround | Match the channel layout you are actually sending. |
These are YouTube’s published guidance values, not a guarantee that a particular machine or network can sustain a stream. Match resolution and frame rate to your source and audience, choose values from the appropriate codec table, and test with representative motion and audio. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If sending primary and backup outputs, include both in the bandwidth calculation. Measure outbound capacity on the actual connection and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.

Make the stream continuous—and plan for failure
A looping input is only one part of continuous operation. SRS’s Docker guide uses ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re in an example that loops a sample file while publishing to SRS. It shows how to keep a file-based source publishing; it does not provide process supervision, automatic restart, source monitoring, stream-key rotation, YouTube event setup, or recovery guarantees for a production broadcast.
For an unattended relay, plan and test each failure boundary separately:

- Source: Confirm the file or playlist remains readable and the encoder can continue sending it.
- Publisher and SRS: Decide how you will detect a stopped process, inspect logs, and restart components. A loop flag alone does not supervise either process.
- Network: Allow the recommended upload headroom and watch for disruptions or shared-network contention.
- YouTube: Monitor stream health and confirm that the event remains live after interruptions. Do not assume that a local publisher retry also restores the YouTube broadcast.
- Archive: If a complete recording matters, arrange recording or segmentation separately for broadcasts longer than YouTube’s automatic archive window.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A broadcast longer than that should not rely on one automatic archive for the entire duration. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to stop sending content to end the stream. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Test before going public
- Start the selected SRS release with its intended configuration and check its status and logs using that release’s documentation.
- Publish a representative test feed from FFmpeg or OBS to the SRS ingest endpoint.
- Verify that SRS forwards to the separate YouTube URL and key using the version-specific forwarding setup you confirmed.
- Check YouTube stream health, audio, motion, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe behavior before making the broadcast public.
- Simulate the interruptions you expect to encounter and verify the restart and recovery behavior you designed. Confirm separately how the YouTube event behaves after a disconnect.
- Check the archive plan against the intended broadcast duration.
Do not publish a production configuration until the relay path is verified with the SRS release actually deployed. The available SRS examples establish basic startup and publishing, not a universal SRS-to-YouTube forwarding recipe.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube never receives video | The SRS ingest endpoint was mistaken for YouTube’s destination, or forwarding is not configured correctly. | Confirm the publisher targets SRS, then verify the release-specific forwarding directive and the separate URL/key from Live Control Room. |
| Connection fails despite a valid key | Wrong destination URL, protocol mismatch, or a relay path that does not support the chosen protocol. | Copy the current endpoint from Live Control Room, use RTMPS when supported, and verify TLS and protocol handling across the complete path. |
| Video stutters or stream health degrades | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, or encoder settings the path cannot sustain. | Measure actual outbound bandwidth, allow 20% headroom beyond total bitrate, and test lower resolution or frame rate if needed. |
| Relay stops after an idle period | An idle-publisher timeout may conflict with forwarding. | Review the SRS release documentation before enabling idle-kick behavior. |
| Stream does not resume after a process or network interruption | A looping command is not a process supervisor or recovery policy. | Test monitoring and restart behavior for the source, publisher and SRS separately, then check the YouTube event’s response. |
| Full broadcast is missing from the archive | The stream exceeded YouTube’s automatic archive window. | For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, plan separate recording or segmentation if complete retention matters. |
