Set screenshot-difference tolerance in the core section of your project’s regconfig.json. Use thresholdRate for a fraction of changed pixels, or thresholdPixel for a fixed pixel count. These are alternatives; the reg-suit README does not document precedence if both are set, so configure one unless you have verified your installed version. Don’t confuse either with matchingThreshold, which adjusts per-pixel color matching sensitivity.
Configure a threshold in regconfig.json
Place the setting under core in the project-root regconfig.json. The actualDir setting is required; the threshold is optional and defaults to zero according to the reg-suit README.

Do not assume one field takes precedence over the other if both appear: the README describes thresholdPixel as an alternative, without specifying behavior when both are configured.

These definitions and defaults are documented in the reg-suit README. The related reg-cli README also distinguishes pixel matching sensitivity from rate or count thresholds, but reg-suit’s own README is the reference for its configuration.

Rate versus count
A rate is relative to total image area: the same percentage permits more differing pixels in a larger screenshot than in a smaller one. An absolute count does not scale with image area. This follows from the documented ratio-versus-count definitions; it is not a separate benchmark or runtime guarantee.
Threshold versus matching sensitivity
thresholdRate and thresholdPixel set how many changed pixels are tolerated overall. matchingThreshold affects whether a given pixel is considered a match based on YUV color distance. Smaller matchingThreshold values make comparisons more sensitive. Adjust these separately: changing matching sensitivity can alter which pixels register as different, while the other thresholds set an aggregate allowance.

Tune the values without masking regressions
- Start with a strict threshold (the documented default is 0) and run representative screenshots through the project’s normal comparison workflow.
- Open the generated HTML report and inspect each detected difference. The reg-suit README describes an HTML report for reviewing current images against expected images.
- Decide whether the observed variation is intentional and acceptable before raising a tolerance.
- If acceptable noise is present, choose either a ratio or a fixed count based on whether the tolerance should scale with image dimensions. Change one setting at a time, then rerun the same representative comparisons and inspect the report again.
- Keep the threshold as low as practical. A permissive tolerance can conceal genuine visual regressions.
This is a cautious tuning workflow, not a guarantee about reg-suit’s internal comparison behavior beyond the documented definitions.

Common configuration problems
- The configuration fails because a required setting is missing: include
actualDirundercore; it is required in the documented configuration. - The threshold value is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: check that
thresholdRateis a number between 0 and 1, and that your JSON is valid. ForthresholdPixel, use a pixel count; the README does not state a range. - Too many subtle color changes are flagged: review
matchingThresholdseparately. Smaller values make comparison more sensitive; changing the aggregate rate or count is not the same adjustment. - Both threshold fields are present and the result is unclear: remove one or confirm behavior against the exact reg-suit version in your lockfile. The README does not document precedence.
- A setting documented on GitHub does not match your installed package: the README’s
masterbranch can change and may not describe every installed version. Check the package version recorded by your project and consult documentation or implementation corresponding to that version.
