On conventional Debian cron, putting TZ=Asia/Kolkata in a crontab changes the command’s environment, not the time at which cron launches it.
How cron decides what “06:15” means
Conventional Debian cron uses the daemon’s configured timezone to decide when a scheduled job runs. A TZ=Asia/Kolkata line in a user crontab does not convert that schedule to IST; it only sets the environment timezone for commands launched by the crontab. The Debian trixie crontab(5) manual states: “Even if a user specifies the TZ environment variable in his crontab this will affect only the commands executed in the crontab, not the execution of the crontab tasks themselves.” Check the installed cron implementation and Debian release, since implementation-specific behavior should not be assumed to apply universally.

Set and verify the Debian system timezone
If this host can use IST as its system timezone, set it administratively before choosing the cron hour. This affects the host’s system timezone, not just this one job, so consider other services and schedules on the machine.
- Inspect the current setting with
timedatectl status. To see available zone names, runtimedatectl list-timezones. - Set the system timezone with
sudo timedatectl set-timezone Asia/Kolkata. - Verify the result with
timedatectl statusordate. Confirm the displayed local time and timezone before adding the cron entry.
On Debian, dpkg-reconfigure tzdata is an alternative way to configure timezone data. If changing the system timezone would disrupt other jobs or services, do not assume a crontab TZ line is an equivalent per-job solution. Confirm whether the installed scheduler explicitly supports per-job timezone scheduling, or use a carefully designed wrapper that checks IST time and test its behavior for missed runs, duplicate runs, and time changes.

Schedule the rotation script
After confirming that the cron daemon uses the intended timezone, edit the crontab for the account that should run the automation:
- Open that account’s crontab with
crontab -e. - Add a five-field cron schedule followed by the command. For a daily run at 06:15 in the configured system timezone, an example is:
15 6 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.py >> /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.log 2>&1- Replace the time, interpreter, account paths, and script path with the actual values for your deployment. Use absolute paths because cron runs with a limited environment.
- Save the crontab and confirm the entry with
crontab -l. - Check the log after the scheduled run. The example appends standard output and errors to the same log file, making failures easier to investigate.
If your cron implementation cannot express a per-job IST schedule and the machine must retain another timezone, a wrapper can check the current IST minute and run the rotation only when due. Design it so a job cannot run twice for the same intended date and time, and so a missed minute has a defined recovery policy. The Debian cron manual recommends checking date and time in the child process when the desired schedule cannot be expressed in cron syntax.

Define the playlist operation before automating it
“Rotate a playlist” is not one YouTube API operation. Decide the target state first; the required API call depends on whether you are changing the order, adding or removing videos, or rebuilding the list.

For a reorder, retain the playlist ID, video IDs, and playlist-item IDs returned by the API. A video ID identifies the video; the playlist-item ID identifies that video’s entry in the playlist and is needed for item-level updates or deletion. YouTube documents manualSortRequired when a position update is attempted on a playlist that is not set to manual ordering. Some special playlists do not support insert or update operations.

Authorize the script and make retries safe
Playlist writes require suitable OAuth authorization. Configure credentials for the same operating-system user that runs the cron job, and store them securely; there is no single credential-storage design that fits every deployment. Do not assume that a script which works in an interactive shell will have the same environment or access when cron runs it.
- Define the desired result for each run, such as moving the next existing item to position zero or replacing an expired item.
- Handle an empty playlist, deleted or private videos, API authorization failures, and partial completion explicitly.
- Make the operation idempotent where possible: if cron retries after an error, the second run should not insert a duplicate or undo an already completed reorder.
- Log enough context to diagnose failures without writing credentials or tokens into the log.
Keep YouTube API quota use in view
Google’s current API reference lists playlistItems.list at 1 quota unit, and playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.update at 50 units each. These are documented operational costs and may change. Read the current state, compare it with the intended state, and skip a write when no change is needed.

Troubleshoot missed runs and failed rotations
