The fastest reliable setup is not a preset of aggressive flags. Create and verify the Google Drive remote first, measure whether the delay is directory listing, metadata checking, per-file API work or payload transfer, then change one setting that addresses that phase. --fast-list targets recursive listing, --drive-chunk-size targets Drive uploads, and --transfers/--checkers control concurrency; each has a resource or rate-limit trade-off.
What is actually slow?
“rclone is slow” can describe several different waits. A job may spend most of its time discovering folders and comparing metadata before any bytes move; it may be making many small Drive API requests; or it may be transferring a few large files. Those cases need different changes.

| Where the time goes | What you will observe | Settings that may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Listing and checking | A long pause before transfers start, or high request activity while rclone walks a large directory tree | --fast-list, and cautiously adjusted --checkers |
| Per-file API work | Thousands of small files progress slowly even though the connection can move a large file quickly | Workload design, conservative concurrency and awareness of Drive rate limits |
| Large-file upload payload | One or a few large uploads have low throughput while CPU, disk and network are otherwise available | --drive-chunk-size for uploads, then measured transfer concurrency |
| Local or network bottleneck | Disk reads, encryption, Wi-Fi, VPN or the uplink is saturated while rclone waits on the system | System and network checks before changing rclone flags |
Use verbose output and elapsed-time measurements to identify the phase. There is no documented, universal combination that is fastest for every Drive account, file-size distribution and machine.

Before you tune: prerequisites and safety
- Install a current rclone release appropriate for your operating system and make sure the executable is available as
rclone. - Have a Google account with access to the destination folders, or a service account for unattended automation.
- Ensure the local source is readable and has enough free space for any temporary files and buffered upload chunks.
- Use a representative test directory rather than your entire archive for the first runs.
- Keep credentials out of shell history, terminal recordings and publicly shared verbose logs.
The Drive backend documentation lists full Drive and read-only scope choices. Select the least privilege that meets the job: a read-only remote is appropriate for downloads, while a copy or synchronization job generally needs write access. The current backend page also carries a time-sensitive notice that rclone’s shared client ID is being retired during 2026 and recommends creating a personal Google API client ID. Check the live instructions at rclone’s Google Drive backend documentation when you configure a new machine.

Create and verify the Google Drive remote
Interactive OAuth setup
On a machine where you can complete a browser login, start the configuration wizard:
- Run
rclone config. - Choose
nto create a new remote and give it a descriptive name, such asmydrive. - Select the Google Drive storage type when the wizard presents the provider list.
- Follow the browser-based OAuth flow, approve the selected scope, and return to the terminal. If the machine has no browser, the wizard provides a remote-authorization path you can complete from another device.
- Choose the correct Drive, shared drive or root folder options for your account, then save the remote.
Use the exact remote name followed by a colon in commands. A quick listing verifies authentication and path selection without copying data:
rclone lsd mydrive:
To inspect a particular folder:
rclone lsf mydrive:destination/path
Authentication success does not prove that the account can access every shared folder. Test the specific destination you intend to use.

For scheduled jobs, containers or servers without an interactive user, the Drive backend supports service-account credentials. Create the service account through Google’s API tooling, grant it access to the intended Drive files or folders, and configure the remote with those credentials. A service account is a separate identity: sharing a folder with your personal account does not automatically give the service account access.
Store the credential file with restrictive operating-system permissions and do not paste its contents into tickets, public repositories or debug output. If your organization uses shared drives or domain policies, confirm that the service account is allowed to access them before diagnosing transfer speed.
Personal client ID
The backend documentation explains how to configure a personal Google API client ID. That is especially relevant while the shared client ID is being retired during 2026. Follow the current fields and consent-screen requirements on the Drive backend page; Google can change these screens independently of rclone. A client ID affects API authorization and quota handling, not the physical bandwidth of your internet connection.

rclone copy /local/path mydrive:destination/path
Rclone compares source and destination metadata and then transfers files that need updating. That comparison can be the slowest part of a large tree, so measure it separately from payload movement.
Mirror deliberately with sync
sync makes the destination match the source and can delete destination files that are absent from the source. Treat it as a destructive operation. Preview the changes with a dry run, inspect the list, and only then remove the preview flag:
rclone sync /local/path mydrive:destination/path --dry-run
Once the proposed deletions and updates are understood, run the same command without --dry-run. A faster transfer is not worth an unintended deletion.
Establish a baseline before changing flags
Run the same representative subset with the default settings first. Capture total elapsed time, file count, total bytes, the time before the first transfer, retry or error messages, network throughput and peak memory. Verbose logs show whether rclone is listing, checking or transferring:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →rclone copy /local/test mydrive:test --stats 10s -vv --log-file=rclone-baseline.log
Use a copy to a test folder, not your production mirror, while experimenting. Keep each log and record one change per run. If local disk utilization or the uplink is already saturated, rclone flags cannot create additional capacity.
Use --fast-list for listing-heavy jobs
--fast-list combines listing requests and trades memory for fewer API transactions. The Drive backend can combine parent-folder filters, with up to 50 parent filters in one request according to its documentation. This can help when a recursive listing or comparison across many directories dominates the runtime.
It does not make the bytes of an individual upload or download move faster. On a small-memory host, loading more listing information can create memory pressure or swapping and make the whole job slower. Test it on a representative tree:

Compare the time until the first transfer, total runtime and peak memory with the baseline. Keep the flag only when the reduction in listing requests outweighs its memory cost. The examples on the backend page are illustrative documentation tests, not a current speed promise for your account.
Tune Drive upload chunks for large files
--drive-chunk-size controls the chunk size used for Drive uploads. The documented default is 8 MiB. The value must be a power of two and at least 256 KiB. Larger chunks can improve large-upload performance, but rclone buffers one chunk per concurrent transfer, so memory demand rises with both chunk size and concurrency.
“Making this larger will improve performance, but note that each chunk is buffered in memory one per transfer.” — rclone project, Google Drive backend documentation
Change this flag only when the payload-transfer phase is the bottleneck. Test valid powers-of-two values one at a time, for example:
rclone copy /local/large-file.iso mydrive:test --drive-chunk-size 16M --stats 10s -vv
Then compare another value if memory remains comfortable. Do not infer that a larger value is better for every file: small files may finish before chunk sizing matters, while a host running many simultaneous uploads can exhaust RAM quickly. This option is for uploads; it is not a download-speed control.
Adjust transfers and checkers cautiously
What the defaults mean
Rclone’s general documentation gives defaults of four simultaneous file transfers (--transfers 4) and eight checkers (--checkers 8). Transfers govern concurrent file data movement. Checkers perform parallel comparison work and are used as a broader parallelism control in several parts of rclone.
When more concurrency can help
If one large transfer leaves the network and CPU mostly idle, several transfers may use otherwise-unused capacity. Make a small change, repeat the same test, and watch throughput, memory, retries and API errors:

rclone copy /local/test mydrive:test --transfers 6 --checkers 8 --stats 10s -vv
The value above is an experiment, not a universal recommendation. Return to the default or reduce the settings when the backend, connection or machine is saturated.
When fewer checkers are better
The general documentation notes that slow backends may need fewer checkers. A high checker count can flood a rate-limited API with metadata requests while providing no payload benefit. For a listing-heavy job, compare a lower checker count with the default and measure the complete run, not just a brief burst.
Do not make --max-connections a routine fix
Rclone documents --max-connections as an advanced control and warns that it may not map one-to-one to TCP or HTTP connections. Some configurations can deadlock. Leave it at its normal behavior unless you understand the backend and have a specific connection-management problem to solve. The general flag descriptions and defaults are in rclone’s documentation.
Account for Drive’s small-file rate limit
Drive’s backend documentation warns that rate limiting can constrain rclone to about two transferred files per second, even though an individual large file may transfer much faster. This is a general limitation note from the rclone project, not a guaranteed current quota for every account.
The practical consequence is that a tree containing tens of thousands of tiny files can remain slow after you increase concurrency. Each file still requires metadata and API work. A large-file test therefore cannot predict the duration of a small-file backup. Measure file count and size distribution, and judge success by total job time rather than by the peak throughput of one large object.
Match settings to the workload
| Workload | First experiment | What to monitor | Likely trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Many directories and long pre-transfer delay | Test --fast-list on the same tree |
Time to first transfer, total listing time and peak memory | Fewer API transactions versus more RAM |
| A few very large uploads | Test a larger valid --drive-chunk-size from the 8 MiB default |
Payload throughput, RAM and retries | Potentially better upload throughput versus memory per transfer |
| Many medium or large files with spare capacity | Increase --transfers modestly, one change at a time |
Network use, CPU, memory, errors and elapsed time | More simultaneous work versus request pressure |
| Millions of small files | Keep expectations realistic; test checker and transfer counts rather than assuming more is better | Files per second, API errors, retry activity and total duration | Drive’s documented per-file rate limitation can dominate |
A repeatable benchmark method
- Select a subset that resembles the real job in directory depth, file count and size distribution.
- Run the default command and save its verbose log.
- Separate the timestamp at which listing/checking begins, the first transferred file and completion.
- Change exactly one variable:
--fast-list, chunk size, transfers or checkers. - Repeat the same subset and destination conditions. Record elapsed time, bytes, files, retries, errors, average throughput and peak memory.
- Discard a change that improves a short burst but worsens total runtime, reliability or memory safety.
- After choosing settings, test a larger but still disposable batch before applying them to production.
Do not present documentation example timings as your own benchmark. Drive-side quotas, account type, region, network path and rclone version can change results.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Nothing transfers for a long time
Inspect the verbose log for listing and checking activity. If the delay is metadata traversal across many folders, test --fast-list and a conservative checker count. If rclone is repeatedly retrying authorization or permission requests, fix the remote’s scope or folder access before touching performance flags.
Best Value
Large uploads are slow but listing is quick
Check local disk read speed and uplink utilization first. If those are not limiting, test a larger upload chunk size while watching memory. Keep transfers low enough that one buffered chunk per transfer fits comfortably in RAM.
More parallelism increases errors or does not improve speed
Drive API limits may already be the bottleneck. Return toward four transfers and eight checkers, then test one setting at a time. A higher request rate cannot remove a server-side limit and can increase retries or memory use.
Small files remain slow after tuning
Compare files-per-second rather than megabytes per second. The backend’s approximately-two-files-per-second limitation note may dominate this workload. A large-file throughput test is not evidence that the small-file job should finish quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMemory usage grows unexpectedly
Reduce --drive-chunk-size, lower concurrent transfers, or avoid --fast-list on a memory-constrained host. Remember that chunk buffers multiply by concurrent upload count, while fast-list keeps more listing data in memory.
Practical command patterns
These commands illustrate distinct tests; replace paths and the remote name with your own values:
- Verify a remote:
rclone lsd mydrive: - Baseline copy with logging:
rclone copy /local/test mydrive:test --stats 10s -vv --log-file=rclone-baseline.log - Listing-focused comparison:
rclone copy /local/test mydrive:test --fast-list --stats 10s -vv --log-file=rclone-fast-list.log - Large-upload chunk experiment:
rclone copy /local/large-file.iso mydrive:test --drive-chunk-size 16M --stats 10s -vv - Safe sync preview:
rclone sync /local/path mydrive:destination/path --dry-run
Consult the live rclone command reference for flags supported by your installed version. Option names and defaults can evolve, so do not copy an old command blindly.
Bottom line
Configure the Drive remote with OAuth or an appropriately authorized service account, verify the exact destination, and establish a logged baseline. Use --fast-list only for listing-heavy work, change --drive-chunk-size only for upload payload bottlenecks, and adjust transfers or checkers in measured increments. Drive’s per-file API limits mean that many-small-file jobs may stay slow; no flag can turn that workload into a large-file transfer.
