How to Choose the Best Framework for Your FiveM Server

There is no universally best FiveM framework. Choose the one that matches the resources you must run, your developers’ API experience, the data you already own, and the game mode you are building. For a persistent role-play economy, a shared framework usually saves substantial development time; for racing, freeroam, minigames, or another self-contained mode, standalone resources may be the cleaner option.

When you are ready to run the server, Godlike.Host FiveM hosting provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, and up to three free backups a day with restore. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Cfx.re describes a framework as “a foundational structure that simplifies the creation of resources for your FiveM server.” Treat that as a starting point, not a promise of compatibility. The decisive test is whether your exact inventory, jobs, banking, phone, housing, garage, character, and persistence resources work together on the framework version you plan to deploy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the server you are actually building

A framework supplies shared conventions and services so separate FiveM resources can work as one server. Depending on the project, that can include characters, identity, jobs, money, inventory, vehicles, groups, death states, database persistence, and events or exports that other resources call.

The framework name is only an ecosystem label. Two resources advertised for the same framework can still require different inventory systems, database schemas, core modifications, or release versions. Conversely, a resource with a compatibility bridge may work only for a documented subset of APIs. Build your choice around the complete workflow a player will use rather than around a popularity claim or a single feature.

When a shared core is appropriate

A persistent economy role-play server normally needs a common source of truth for characters, cash, jobs, inventories, vehicles, and saved progress. A framework reduces the amount of infrastructure you have to design and gives resource authors a predictable API. It also makes connected systems—such as a phone querying contacts, a garage reading owned vehicles, and a banking resource changing balances—easier to coordinate.

You still have to select compatible implementations of those systems. A core may not include a phone, housing, or a particular inventory, and a separately installed resource may assume a different database layout than the rest of the stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When standalone is the better answer

Racing, freeroam, minigames, event servers, and tightly scoped custom modes often do not need shared characters, jobs, money, or long-term ownership. Prototype those modes with standalone resources first. Adding a full role-play core introduces database tables, lifecycle events, permissions, and dependencies that may provide no value to the players you are targeting.

If the design later grows into a persistent economy, add the required shared systems deliberately. Standalone does not mean “no code”; it means each capability must supply its own storage, identity, and integration where needed.

Frameworks at a glance

Framework Strongest fit Development model Important checks
QBCore Projects whose essential resources explicitly support QBCore Primarily Lua resources using the QBCore ecosystem Core, inventory, and txAdmin recipe are separate pieces; verify inventory, banking, and any modified-core assumptions for every resource
ESX Legacy Existing ESX servers, ESX-experienced teams, and resources built around ESX APIs Lua-first ESX resource ecosystem Confirm the current ESX release, addon APIs, inventory choice, and database arrangement; compare an update with a migration before rewriting
Qbox (QBX) QB-oriented projects seeking integrated multicharacter, multiple jobs or gangs, queueing, and persistent vehicles Export-based API with a documented QBCore bridge The bridge does not remove SQL, inventory, saved-data, direct-database, or unsupported core-file conversion work
ox_core Teams building a custom foundation rather than installing a complete role-play recipe Lua with JavaScript and TypeScript integration options Check which character UI, jobs, phone, and inventory integrations your chosen installation supplies; source builds use Git, Node.js, and Bun
ND Core Teams that want ND’s character, vehicle, ped, death, group, and addon model Lua-oriented ND ecosystem with compatibility modes ESX or QB compatibility modes are starting points for testing, not proof that arbitrary paid resources will work unchanged
vRP 2 Maintaining an existing vRP codebase or intentionally using its object-oriented extension model vRP’s object-oriented extension approach Identify the major version, fork owner, database driver, and extensions; “vRP” alone is not a sufficient compatibility identifier
Standalone Racing, freeroam, minigames, and custom modes without a persistent role-play economy Resource-specific APIs and storage Characters, money, jobs, and persistence must be supplied separately if the design eventually needs them

The table is a planning aid, not a performance ranking. No reliable market-share, player-capacity, or benchmark figure establishes one of these frameworks as universally fastest or most popular.

Five decision axes that matter more than the label

1. Required resources and compatibility

Write down every resource that is essential rather than desirable. Include character creation, identity, jobs, inventory, banking, phone, garages, vehicles, housing, administration, and reconnect persistence. For each candidate resource, record the exact framework API, inventory API, database schema, version, and dependencies it documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer support from a store category, a screenshot, or a framework badge. A job script may use the framework API but require a particular inventory export. A garage may support a core while expecting a different vehicle table. A phone may need an event that your selected character resource does not emit. Compatibility is a property of the entire combination, not of one name.

2. Development model and team skills

QBCore, ESX, and many ND setups are Lua-first resource ecosystems. Qbox exposes an export-based API and provides a QBCore bridge for projects moving from QB-oriented code. ox_core is more foundation-oriented and can integrate Lua with JavaScript or TypeScript. vRP 2 is a deliberate choice for teams comfortable with its object-oriented extension model.

Pick the model your developers can debug and extend. A team fluent in Lua may ship sooner in a Lua-centered ecosystem; a team that wants typed JavaScript or TypeScript integration may value ox_core’s options. The language alone is not enough: examine event names, exports, lifecycle hooks, database access patterns, and the quality of documentation your team will rely on.

3. Existing data and migration cost

An inherited ESX server can be cheaper to update than to replace. Before proposing a migration, inventory the current characters, accounts, items, owned vehicles, properties, permissions, and custom tables. Identify which resources write to each table and whether values are stored as JSON, separate rows, or framework-specific structures.

Qbox’s QBCore bridge can reduce API rewrites, but it does not automatically convert SQL, inventory records, or saved player data. Direct database queries, imports of unsupported core files, and incorrect API usage still require conversion or a rewrite. Treat a bridge as an adapter that narrows the work, not as a data migration tool.

4. Game mode

Persistent economy role-play usually benefits from a shared core. A race server may need only session management, checkpoints, leaderboards, and perhaps vehicle setup. A freeroam or minigame server may be simpler when each resource owns its own state. Decide whether players must keep an identity, balance, inventory, job, property, or vehicle across restarts; those requirements determine how much shared infrastructure is justified.

5. Operations and testing

Record the exact framework and resource versions, database requirements, artifact version, and deployment recipe. Cfx.re recommends txAdmin recipes for streamlined deployment; use a recipe only after checking that it installs the core, database, and resource versions your plan requires.

Operate a staging server that mirrors production. Back up resources and databases before changes, test complete player workflows, and capture profiler data during representative joins, inventory operations, and vehicle activity. Idle measurements cannot establish how a stack behaves under real work, and no framework should be selected on an unsupported claim that it is universally fastest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Framework profiles: what each choice demands

QBCore

QBCore is a sensible first candidate when the must-have resources explicitly support it. Its core, inventory, and txAdmin recipe are separate pieces, so installation is not a single compatibility decision. For every resource, check the required inventory, banking implementation, exports, and whether it expects a modified core file.

Ask the resource author which QBCore release and dependency versions are supported, then reproduce that combination in staging. A script that says “QBCore compatible” may still need a particular inventory API or a specific character and vehicle schema. Keep a written dependency map so an update to one component does not silently invalidate another.

ESX Legacy

Choose ESX Legacy when your current server, developers, or essential resources already use ESX APIs. “Legacy” in the project name does not by itself mean obsolete. Verify the current ESX release, addon APIs, inventory selection, database driver, and the maintenance status of the resources you depend on.

For an inherited server, compare two complete plans: update the existing ESX stack in place, or migrate characters and resources to another framework. Include the labor of converting saved data, testing every player workflow, and retraining administrators. A clean installation can look simpler until the first custom table or long-lived character record has to be preserved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Qbox (QBX)

Qbox is worth evaluating for a QB-oriented project that wants integrated multicharacter support, multiple jobs or gangs, queueing, and persistent vehicles. Its documented QBCore bridge can help a project whose resources already target QB-style APIs.

Test the limits explicitly. Direct database access, imports of unsupported core files, incorrect API calls, inventory assumptions, and saved-data formats can all require conversion. Run separate tests for inventory, character selection, banking, garages, jobs, and persistence; passing one bridge test does not prove that the other workflows are safe.

ox_core

Consider ox_core when the team wants a foundation for custom gameplay rather than a complete role-play server recipe. Determine which installation or companion resources provide the character interface, jobs, phone, and inventory functions you need. If those pieces are absent, budget time to select, integrate, or build them.

The documented source-build workflow uses Git, Node.js, and Bun. Using ox_core does not require writing every resource in TypeScript; Lua remains an option. The practical question is whether your team wants to assemble a tailored stack and own its integration boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ND Core

ND Core fits teams attracted to ND’s character, vehicle, ped, death, group, and addon model. Its ESX and QB compatibility modes are useful starting points for experiments, but they are not guarantees that arbitrary paid resources will run unchanged. Test each commercial or custom resource in the actual mode you intend to deploy, including its database writes and reconnect behavior.

vRP 2

Evaluate vRP 2 when you are maintaining an existing vRP codebase or deliberately want its object-oriented extension model. Confirm the major version, fork owner, database driver, and extensions before selecting resources. “vRP” without those identifiers is too vague to establish compatibility, because forks and versions can expose different APIs and storage expectations.

Standalone

Standalone is often the right first prototype for racing, freeroam, minigames, or a custom mode that has no persistent role-play economy. Keep the boundary clear: if players later need shared characters, money, jobs, inventory, or ownership, those capabilities must be added with their own storage and integration contracts. Decide whether introducing a full core is still cheaper than extending the standalone design.

A repeatable framework-selection workflow

  1. Describe the must-have player journey. Write the sequence from character creation through identity setup, job assignment, inventory use, purchases, banking, vehicle storage, housing, disconnect, reconnect, and server restart. Include administrator and recovery actions, not just the happy path.
  2. Build a compatibility ledger. For every candidate resource, record its exact framework and core API, inventory API, database schema, version, dependent resources, required artifact, and any modified files. Mark each item as documented, tested, or unknown.
  3. Shortlist by evidence. Keep only frameworks with documented support for the required stack. For a QB-oriented project, test QBCore and Qbox as separate candidates. For an existing ESX system, assess an ESX update before committing to cross-framework migration.
  4. Create a production-like staging server. Use the same artifacts, database engine and schema, resource versions, configuration, and expected workload as production. Do not validate a migration against an empty database if live characters and vehicles will be carried over.
  5. Exercise complete workflows. Test character creation, inventory transfers, purchases, banking, jobs, vehicle storage and retrieval, housing access, reconnects, and persistence after a resource or server restart. Test failure paths such as a dropped connection during a purchase and a missing dependency at startup.
  6. Measure representative load and preserve rollback. Capture profiler data during joins, inventory activity, and vehicle operations with realistic concurrent activity. Keep dated copies of resources, configuration, and databases so you can restore the previous stack if a conversion fails.

Migration planning: update, bridge, or rewrite?

Update the current framework

An in-place update is usually the first option to cost for an inherited server. It preserves familiar APIs and existing data, but you still need backups, a schema review, and regression tests. Check whether the current inventory, banking, garage, and character resources are maintained for the release you intend to run.

Use a compatibility bridge

A bridge can lower the number of resource-level changes when moving between related APIs. Qbox’s QBCore bridge is an example, but bridge coverage is bounded by the APIs it implements. Any resource that bypasses those APIs, imports unsupported core files, or queries tables directly may still need conversion.

Rewrite and convert data

A rewrite makes sense when the existing architecture blocks required features or is no longer maintainable. Treat data conversion as its own project. Export and validate characters, accounts, inventories, vehicles, properties, permissions, and custom records; map old identifiers to new ones; and rehearse the import on a copy before touching production. Keep a read-only archive of the original database for recovery and audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing gates before launch

Do not promote a framework because the server starts. Use launch gates that represent what players and administrators actually do.

  • Identity gate: Create multiple characters, reconnect them, and confirm the correct identity and permissions return.
  • Economy gate: Earn, spend, transfer, and recover money; verify balances after a restart and after an interrupted transaction.
  • Inventory gate: Add, move, use, drop, and persist items across reconnects. Check capacity, metadata, and failed transactions.
  • Vehicle gate: Purchase, store, retrieve, damage, and respawn vehicles; verify ownership and garage data after restarts.
  • Job and group gate: Change jobs or groups, apply permissions, and confirm that dependent resources see the new state.
  • Failure gate: Stop a dependency, restart a resource, disconnect a client during a write, and restore a backup to prove the recovery procedure.
  • Load gate: Profile joins and high-activity operations with representative concurrency instead of relying on an empty or idle server.

Practical recommendations by project type

New persistent role-play server

Start with the resource ledger, then shortlist the frameworks that document support for every essential system. QBCore and Qbox deserve separate staging trials for a QB-oriented design; ox_core is more suitable when the team wants to assemble a custom foundation. Choose only after the character, inventory, banking, job, vehicle, and persistence paths pass together.

Inherited ESX server

Audit the current ESX release, addons, inventory, database, and custom tables first. Price an ESX update against a migration that includes data conversion and full regression testing. A familiar, supportable stack can be the lower-risk choice even if another framework appears attractive on a clean feature list.

Custom gameplay with a small development team

Keep the foundation narrow. Standalone resources can reduce integration overhead for a mode without persistent economy features. If you need a shared core but want to own the architecture, ox_core or a framework whose APIs your team already understands may be preferable to installing a large role-play recipe you will later remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing vRP or ND codebase

Preserve the ecosystem while it remains maintainable, and identify the exact fork, version, extensions, and compatibility mode. Replacing a working codebase should solve a documented problem, not simply follow a framework trend.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by popularity

Popularity does not prove that your inventory, phone, garage, or database schema will work. Use documented support and a staging test instead of a player-count or market-share claim; no qualifying statistic establishes a universal winner.

Assuming a bridge is a migration

Bridges translate supported API calls. They do not automatically rewrite direct SQL, convert inventory formats, or preserve every saved-data field. Inventory, character selection, banking, garages, jobs, and persistence need individual tests.

Installing a recipe without reading its components

A txAdmin recipe can streamline deployment, but inspect what it installs, which versions it pins, what database it expects, and which resources remain separate. Reconcile the recipe with your compatibility ledger before exposing the server to players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing only the startup screen

A server that boots can still lose money, duplicate items, fail to save vehicles, or break after a resource restart. Test complete player workflows and failure recovery on a production-like database.

Changing several foundations at once

Do not change the framework, inventory, database schema, and character system in one untracked step. Make a dated backup, change one boundary where possible, run the relevant tests, and keep a rollback point.

Final selection checklist

  • Our game mode genuinely needs the shared systems this framework supplies.
  • Every must-have resource documents support for the exact framework and version.
  • Inventory, banking, phone, jobs, garages, housing, and character APIs have been mapped.
  • Database schemas, drivers, migrations, and direct queries are understood.
  • The development team can debug the framework’s language, exports, events, and lifecycle.
  • Existing player data has a tested update, bridge, or conversion plan.
  • A staging server mirrors production artifacts, resources, database, and workload.
  • Complete workflows and failure recovery pass before launch.
  • Profiler captures cover joins and high-activity operations, not only idle time.
  • Backups and a dated rollback procedure are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a framework for every FiveM server?

No. A racing, freeroam, minigame, or other self-contained mode can use standalone resources. Add a shared framework when you need persistent characters, money, jobs, inventory, vehicles, housing, or coordinated role-play systems.

Does Qbox run every QBCore script?

No. Qbox includes a documented QBCore bridge, but scripts that use direct database access, unsupported core-file imports, incorrect APIs, or incompatible inventory and saved-data formats may need conversion or a rewrite. Test each essential resource separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ESX Legacy obsolete because of the word “Legacy”?

Not automatically. Its suitability depends on the current ESX release, addon APIs, inventory, database setup, and the resources your server uses. An updated, documented ESX stack can be lower risk than a cross-framework migration.

Which framework is fastest?

The available comparison establishes no universal speed ranking or player-capacity limit. Workload, resource quality, database queries, and configuration matter, so profile representative joins and gameplay operations on your own staging stack.

What should a beginner choose?

Start with the framework that has documented support for the resources you need and that your team can understand. Use a txAdmin recipe for a reproducible deployment, then verify the recipe’s versions and dependencies in staging before launch.
