Set OBS to retry a dropped YouTube stream
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced.
- Under Automatically Reconnect, enable reconnecting.
- Set Retry Delay to a positive number of seconds and choose Maximum Retries based on how long you are willing to let OBS continue attempting recovery.
- Apply the settings, then test a stream and observe how your installed OBS version behaves before relying on it for an unattended loop.
The retry delay is the initial wait, not a fixed interval for every attempt: OBS doubles the wait on each retry. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting. These are OBS-documented behaviors; the documentation does not prescribe one ideal setting for Indian broadband or every YouTube loop. OBS Output API Reference

Choose a delay and retry limit for your connection
Choose settings according to the interruptions you actually see and the interruption your channel can tolerate. A shorter starting delay can begin another attempt sooner, but subsequent attempts are spaced farther apart as the wait doubles. A larger retry limit allows more attempts; it does not make a long outage recover faster or ensure the remote ingest server is reachable.
There is no single best combination established for all Indian broadband connections. Treat the setting as a recovery policy to test, not as a way to compensate for a persistently unstable line.

Check the connection before changing picture quality
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Check sustained upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom for streaming; that is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific reliability statistic. If you use a backup stream, its bandwidth also has to fit alongside the primary stream and recommended headroom. YouTube streaming tips
Match bitrate to the output you intend to send
Select a bitrate appropriate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, using YouTube’s published encoder-setting recommendations rather than treating one bitrate as universal. A setting that is too demanding for the available upload can contribute to dropped frames or disconnections. Prefer wired networking when practical
If the computer is on Wi-Fi, test an Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable can help only if the computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports; it will not fix an ISP outage or a problem at YouTube’s ingest endpoint. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
Read OBS symptoms and troubleshoot the cause
OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Causes can include an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Use the symptom to guide diagnosis rather than repeatedly changing reconnect delay.

- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects: check whether the bitrate is stable and sustainable, and verify upload capacity and stream health.
- Wi-Fi connection: test wired networking if compatible ports are available.
- Problem continues on a stable wired connection: check VPN or security software interference, bundled network-optimization utilities, drivers, and other network conditions, following OBS troubleshooting guidance.
- Considering dynamic bitrate: OBS notes it may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower stream quality.
- OBS keeps retrying without recovery: the connection may still be down or the remote ingest endpoint may be unreachable. Reconnect attempts cannot make either available.

Protect the YouTube stream key
A YouTube stream key lets an encoder send a feed to your live stream, so treat it like a password. Keep it private. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the key in OBS; the old key will no longer be the one to use. YouTube: Manage live stream settings

Understand what reconnecting can and cannot do
OBS automatic reconnect is an output retry mechanism. It can retry after a dropped output, but it cannot restore broadband service that remains down, ensure YouTube’s ingest endpoint is reachable, or guarantee the broadcast stays active through every interruption. For an unattended loop, use it alongside a stable connection, a bitrate suited to measured upload, and monitoring—not as a substitute for them.
