You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live by connecting an encoder to the Stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. But YouTube’s published instructions do not establish a general method for sending one prerecorded source to both primary and backup RTMP ingest URLs. Set up the documented encoder connection, then verify any backup route with a real failover test; do not treat YouTube’s HLS backup-URL instructions as RTMP instructions.
What YouTube’s instructions establish—and what they don’t
For a standard encoder stream, YouTube provides a Stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room. The encoder sends its feed to that URL using the key. You can configure the encoder to play a prerecorded file, provided the software supports file playback.

YouTube also recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary and confirming that the player rolls over. However, its explicit instructions to copy a “Backup server URL” apply to HLS ingestion. They do not establish the same control or procedure for RTMP. The available YouTube guidance does not settle how to send one prerecorded source simultaneously to primary and backup RTMP endpoints. Check the current Live Control Room and your encoder’s documentation before configuring a dual-RTMP route.
Set up a prerecorded YouTube Live stream
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create or select the stream. Use the current Stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Treat the key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Configure the encoder. Select YouTube as the destination if your encoder offers it. Otherwise, paste YouTube’s Stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP server field, and enter the stream key in its Stream Key field. Choose the prerecorded media file using the encoder’s playback controls. Exact labels and file-playback steps depend on the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room and check both picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, wait until the preview is present, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch stream health and verify that the intended prerecorded content and audio continue playing. Stop the encoder and end the event using the controls appropriate to your encoder and Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer stream will be archived in the same way.

Choose the protocol deliberately
RTMP
For the generic encoder setup, use the Stream URL and key from the Stream tab. The available YouTube instructions do not document a general RTMP-specific way to configure primary and backup URLs. Do not paste an HLS backup URL into an RTMP field or assume an encoder’s “backup” option matches YouTube’s ingest behavior.
RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL, copy it into the encoder, and enter the stream key separately. This sets up a secure endpoint; it does not by itself configure a second endpoint or provide a separate RTMPS failover procedure.
HLS
YouTube’s HLS instructions are protocol-specific: select HLS as the stream protocol, copy the resulting Stream URL, and, if needed, copy the displayed Backup server URL. HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, so it has higher latency. YouTube’s HLS requirements, including TS segments and HTTPS POST/PUT, apply to HLS and should not be transferred to an RTMP setup.

Configure and test a backup encoder
If your encoder or hardware setup supports a separate backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing whether the viewer’s player actually rolls over. Having two encoder processes running is not proof that failover works.
- Set up and start the primary encoder and confirm its feed appears in the YouTube player.
- Start the backup according to its own documented configuration.
- For the test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection.
- Watch the player and confirm it rolls over to the backup feed. If it does not, the configuration has not demonstrated working failover.
Repeat the test before an important broadcast and after a material configuration change. YouTube’s recommendation is to verify rollover in the player, not merely to check that a backup encoder is running.
Plan upload capacity for both feeds
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity for the primary stream plus the backup stream, with 20% headroom: primary bitrate + backup bitrate + 20%. For example, if both configured feeds require 6 Mbps, the calculation is (6 + 6) × 1.2 = 14.4 Mbps of available upload capacity. That is an application of YouTube’s planning guidance, not a universal bitrate setting; use the actual configured bitrates for your streams and allow for other traffic on the connection.

Choose an encoder or failover design
Before relying on a setup, establish that it meets all the relevant requirements below. YouTube’s general guidance explains encoder connection and failover testing, but it does not verify a particular encoder’s dual-RTMP compatibility.

- Can the encoder play the prerecorded file as a live feed?
- Can it send to multiple destinations, or can a separately configured backup encoder take over?
- Is the selected ingest protocol RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS—and do the URL and instructions match that protocol?
- Can the internet connection sustain both outbound feeds plus the recommended headroom?
- Has a test confirmed that the YouTube player rolls over when the primary stops?
Hardware is not required by the documented setup; an encoder can be software. YouTube’s general tips recommend professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but that is not proof that any particular model supports simultaneous prerecorded dual-RTMP transmission.

The scheduled event has a preview but is not live
For a scheduled encoder stream, the preview comes first. Once it is present, click Go live in Live Control Room.
The backup does not take over
Confirm rollover in the player during a deliberate test. If it fails, review the encoder’s backup configuration and the endpoint/protocol being used; the available YouTube instructions do not supply a universal dual-RTMP recipe.

You have an HLS backup URL but an RTMP setup
Do not use that URL as though it were an RTMP backup endpoint. YouTube’s Backup server URL instructions in this context are for HLS; confirm the protocol and current encoder instructions before changing the configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays online without keeping an encoder computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is an alternative for cloud playback, not a claim that StreamNeo configures primary and backup RTMP ingest URLs. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
