To run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop through OBS on a Mac, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, then connect a YouTube stream key. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60; the Mac, source, and sustained upload connection must all handle the workload. Those settings are a target, not a guarantee that any particular Mac can stream reliably at 4K60.
What kind of loop are you setting up?
A loop can mean a prerecorded local video repeated as a Media Source, a desktop or app capture, or live input from a camera or console. The source changes the permissions and hardware you need, but the YouTube output settings are largely the same.

- Local video: add the recording as an OBS Media Source and enable looping in its properties. Confirm that the file itself has the detail and frame rate you want; upscaling a smaller recording to 4K does not create native 4K detail.
- Desktop, window, or app capture: use the appropriate capture source and grant OBS Screen Recording permission in macOS.
- Camera or console: use a compatible input path; a capture card may be needed depending on the device. Check compatibility with your source, resolution, frame rate, and macOS before buying hardware.
This guide is for sending the output from OBS on a Mac to YouTube Live. It does not assume that your Mac can sustain 4K60; actual capacity depends on the encoder, scene, sources, filters, and other workload.
Check your Mac and choose an encoder
OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon processors and macOS 11 or later among its basic macOS requirements. Meeting those basic requirements does not guarantee streaming capability: OBS notes that demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the OBS system requirements and OBS hardware encoding guidance as starting points, then test the workload you intend to run.

- Open OBS and, if useful, run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard for a starting configuration. Treat its result as a starting point, not proof that a long 4K60 session will remain stable.
- Open Settings → Output. If the encoder controls are limited, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- On Apple Silicon, OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264. On Intel Macs, OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is not supported for typical streaming services that require constant bitrate; use x264 for streaming instead.
OBS’s macOS minimum-version page is a basic requirement, not a promise of current compatibility for every future OBS release or macOS version. Check OBS’s current documentation if you are installing or updating on an older system.
Set 4K resolution and 60 fps
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160.
- Set Common FPS Values to 60.
These values map OBS to YouTube’s 2160p60 target. They do not establish that your source contains 4K60 detail or that your Mac can render and encode it without dropped frames. If the source is lower resolution or frame rate, outputting at 4K60 will not restore detail or motion that is not in the original.

Configure the stream output
Open Settings → Output → Streaming. In Advanced output mode, use the following settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives different bitrate targets by codec at the same resolution and frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Setting | Recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rate control | CBR | A constant bitrate is the expected streaming setup for YouTube ingest. |
| Video bitrate, H.264 at 2160p60 | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum | YouTube’s listed 2160p60 H.264 targets. A bitrate at the minimum is not the recommended target. |
| Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265 at 2160p60 | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum | YouTube’s listed 2160p60 targets for those codecs. OBS’s cited Apple Silicon guidance establishes H.264 streaming support; do not assume AV1 or HEVC streaming is available in every OBS/macOS combination. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC; stereo 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings for the encoder stream. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s recommendation for SDR video. |
For YouTube’s codec-specific settings and recommendations, see YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K. Use RTMPS when available: YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream data to and through Google’s servers.

Grant macOS permissions and build the scene
Give OBS only the permissions required by your sources and features. macOS wording and dialogs vary by version. OBS provides OBS Studio → Review App Permissions as a place to review requests; see the OBS macOS permissions guide.
- Screen Recording: required for desktop, window, or app capture.
- Camera: required if a webcam or camera source needs it.
- Microphone: required for microphone input.
- Accessibility: relevant for OBS keyboard shortcuts when OBS is not the foreground app.
For a local recording loop, add a Media Source to your scene, select the file, and enable looping in that source’s properties. The exact property label or location can vary between OBS versions. For a camera or console source, add the appropriate device or capture source and confirm the input works before configuring the full scene.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS → Settings → Stream, using the service and server options shown in your OBS version.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start a test stream before the event or long-running loop. Use motion and audio representative of the actual content, check the preview and sound, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Check that the Mac’s sustained upload capacity can support the selected bitrate, with headroom for normal variation. An internet speed test is useful, but it does not prove that the actual stream will remain stable over time.
YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A short preview is not a substitute for observing the real workload long enough to see whether encoding and connection remain stable.
Choose between 4K60, 4K30, and 1080p60
Keep 4K60 only when the source detail and motion justify it, the Mac handles the scene, and the connection can sustain the relevant YouTube bitrate target. YouTube lists these 2160p30 targets alongside 2160p60:
Best Value
- 4K Ultra HD Video Webcam:See every detail with crystal-clear 4K resolution. Experience incredibly sharp and lifelike video quality that makes you look professional on every call, ensuring you're always seen in the best light.
- Wide 80° Field of View & Full 360° Flexibility:Fit everyone into the frame with the 80° wide-angle lens. Easily adjust your view with 180° tilt and 360° swivel rotation. Mount it securely on your monitor, desk, or tripod for the perfect angle every time.
- True Plug-and-Play Simplicity: No drivers, no fuss. Just connect the webcam to your computer via USB and you're ready to join calls in seconds. It offers seamless compatibility with all major platforms like Zoom, Teams, and Skype.
- Complete Privacy with a Physical Sliding Lens Cover: Worried about privacy? We've got you covered—literally. A built-in sliding lens cover physically blocks the camera when not in use, ensuring your private life stays private.
- Built-in Mic & Automatic Light Correction: Communicate clearly with the built-in noise-reducing microphone. The camera also intelligently adjusts the video brightness to make you look your best, even in poor lighting conditions.
| YouTube ingest target | 2160p60 | 2160p30 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum | 42 Mbps recommended; 11 Mbps minimum |
| AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum | 30 Mbps recommended; 8 Mbps minimum |
Use 4K30 if the stream benefits from 4K detail but the Mac or upload connection cannot sustain 60 fps. Use 1080p60 if smooth motion matters more than 4K detail or 2160p overloads the system. These are practical trade-offs, not claims of a measured visual-quality difference. YouTube’s recommendations and minimums are listed on its encoder settings page.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and encoding overload
OBS identifies resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, sources, filters, and browser sources as contributors to resource demand. If 4K60 is unstable, change one major demand at a time and retest so you can identify the constraint.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding overload or skipped frames | The Mac cannot render or encode the chosen output and scene workload in real time. | Reduce output to 30 fps or a lower resolution; simplify the scene, remove expensive filters, or remove unnecessary sources. |
| Dropped frames from network | The sustained connection may not hold the chosen bitrate, even if a brief speed test looks adequate. | Check the actual upload connection, use a lower bitrate or output target if needed, then retest while watching YouTube stream health. |
| Black or missing desktop capture | OBS may not have Screen Recording permission, or the selected capture source may not match the intended window or display. | Review macOS permissions for OBS, grant Screen Recording, and reselect or refresh the capture source. |
| No camera or microphone | The related macOS permission may be missing, or the device/input may not be selected or available. | Review Camera or Microphone permission as applicable, then check the selected device and OBS audio meters. |
| Video plays once instead of repeating | Looping may not be enabled on the Media Source. | Open that source’s properties and enable its loop option; check the file selection and preview again. |
| YouTube preview does not receive the broadcast | The stream key or server configuration may be incorrect, or OBS may not have connected. | Recheck the current YouTube stream’s server URL and key in OBS, keep the key private, and reconnect. |
Activity Monitor can help identify other heavy processes; close only unnecessary apps after checking. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers workload reductions. Lowering the canvas itself can require repositioning sources, so try reducing output resolution first unless the Mac is severely constrained.
