To reduce OBS dropped frames while streaming a YouTube playlist, first check whether OBS is actually losing frames, then enable the relevant network options in Settings → Advanced → Network on Windows, keep the bitrate below what your upload connection can reliably sustain, and diagnose problems beyond OBS if drops continue. These settings can help, but they do not guarantee a stable stream or provide a special playlist mode.
First identify whether the problem is dropped frames or viewer buffering
Check the dropped-frames counter at the bottom of the OBS main window while the stream is running. A rising counter, especially with a yellow or red connection indicator, points to a problem sustaining the connection to the streaming service’s ingest server or sustaining the configured bitrate. OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

If the counter is not rising but viewers say the stream buffers, do not assume OBS’s connection is dropping frames. Viewers may have different internet connections, devices, or locations. OBS distinguishes this audience playback issue from broadcaster-side dropped frames in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.

Configure OBS network settings
Enable Windows network optimizations and TCP pacing
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- On Windows, enable Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing.
- Click Apply, then OK, and test the stream while watching the dropped-frames counter.
OBS describes these as troubleshooting options: some users report improvement, and the options add diagnostic detail to the log. They are Windows-only and are not a universal fix. If they make no difference, continue diagnosing the connection rather than repeatedly toggling them.

Keep Bind to IP on Default; test IPv4 only if appropriate
In the same Network settings, leave Bind to IP set to Default. You can test IP Family → IPv4 Only as a diagnostic, but if that does not help, return to the default selection that allows IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4-only is not a general stability upgrade.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may prevent some dropped frames. The trade-off is reduced picture quality during congestion, and OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback when the root cause cannot be resolved, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Set bitrate according to dependable upload capacity, not just the best result from a single speed test. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, while stressing that the suitable bitrate depends on stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. It is a heuristic, not a guarantee. If the bitrate is close to your connection’s fluctuating ceiling, a brief slowdown can cause dropped frames; lower it and test again.

Work through causes outside OBS
If network options and a lower bitrate do not resolve the drops, isolate other parts of the path between your computer and YouTube. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide lists software, network, equipment, and ISP routing or congestion as possible causes.
- Try a different ingest server. If the alternative works better, the original route or server may be involved.
- Test for VPN or security-software interference. Temporarily isolate the effect where safe; keep protection enabled afterward and configure an appropriate exception if needed.
- Check network-prioritization utilities. Software such as Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC utilities may affect streaming traffic. Test settings carefully rather than assuming they are the cause.
- Update network drivers using the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s source.
- Prefer wired networking for the test. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable. A wired connection can help isolate wireless problems, but does not guarantee a fix.
- Inspect, do not preemptively replace, equipment. A modem or router, cable, network card, switch, or extender could be faulty. If you are unsure, contact your ISP before replacing hardware.
- Ask the ISP to investigate if the checks above do not resolve the issue; congestion or routing outside your home may be involved.
Trying another streaming service can help determine whether the issue appears service-related, but it does not by itself repair a bad route or ISP problem.

If OBS is stable but viewers still buffer
When OBS reports no rising dropped frames, consider the audience’s playback conditions and the demands of the output resolution and frame rate. OBS notes that YouTube transcodes streams so viewers can select different quality options. A consistent keyframe interval helps smooth transitions between those options; see OBS’s Transcodes / Transcoding guide. This does not establish a current numeric YouTube keyframe interval, so consult YouTube’s current documentation for exact encoder requirements.
Save a known-good configuration for recurring streams
OBS Profiles can save most output-related settings, including Stream, Video, and Output, making it practical to keep a tested configuration for a particular platform or bitrate and resolution. Profiles do not save Scenes. If the playlist stream also needs a distinct layout, save that separately with a Scene Collection. Details are in the OBS Profiles guide.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped-frames counter rises | Connection to ingest server or bitrate beyond dependable upload capacity | Lower bitrate, test network options, try another ingest server, then investigate software, Wi-Fi, equipment, and ISP factors. |
| Drops improve only after enabling the Windows network options | Network handling or connection behavior may be involved | Keep the working settings and monitor subsequent streams; improvement is not proof that every cause is resolved. |
| OBS remains connected but picture quality worsens during congestion | Dynamic bitrate may be reducing output bitrate | Recognize the quality trade-off; address the underlying connection issue where possible. |
| OBS counter stays steady but viewers report buffering | Viewer connection/device or output demands, rather than broadcaster-side drops | Consider audience reach and the resolution/frame rate; verify current platform guidance. |
| Changing to IPv4 Only makes no difference | IP family selection is unlikely to be the fix | Restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 selection. |
| Problem persists after OBS and bitrate checks | VPN/security software, prioritization utilities, drivers, Wi-Fi, hardware, or ISP route/congestion | Isolate these causes systematically; contact the ISP before uncertain hardware replacement. |
