Use --sleep-idle-seconds to set how long llama-server waits before unloading an idle model, and --timeout (or -to) to set the server’s read/write timeout. These options control different behavior: sleep frees model memory after inactivity; the timeout does not set the sleep period. The defaults documented in the current upstream README are sleep disabled (-1) and a 3,600-second read/write timeout. Because llama.cpp is actively developed, verify the options in llama-server --help for the build you run.

Set sleep and timeout on the command line
Pass the options when starting the server. This example uses 300 seconds of idle time and a 120-second read/write timeout; those are sample values, not universal recommendations.
llama-server -m /path/to/model.gguf

--timeout 120Choose the idle threshold according to whether you prefer to keep model memory resident or release it during quiet periods. Choose the server read/write timeout for the transport and request conditions in your deployment. Client-side request deadlines and long generation times are separate considerations; do not assume changing this server option automatically changes a client’s timeout.

Configure the read/write timeout with an environment variable
The README documents LLAMA_ARG_TIMEOUT as the environment variable for --timeout:
LLAMA_ARG_TIMEOUT=120How that value interacts with command-line arguments and service or container configuration can depend on the launch setup. If multiple sources set the timeout, inspect the actual service configuration and the installed build’s help rather than assuming an undocumented precedence rule.

Use a model preset
In a preset, use option names without their leading command-line dashes. The following example sets both values globally:

Understand what happens when the model sleeps
Sleep is based on inactivity. When it takes effect, llama-server unloads the model and associated memory, including the KV cache. A subsequent task causes the model to reload, so the first task after an idle period may include a cold-start step. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal reload-time figure.
These monitoring requests are explicitly exempt from waking the model or resetting the idle timer:

Consequently, regular health polling does not keep the model resident. Use GET /props to inspect sleep status; in router mode, the README documents a model query parameter, for example /props?model=(model_name). See the server endpoint documentation.

GET /props is the documented check for sleep status. The health endpoint instead reports loading or readiness: while the model is loading it returns HTTP 503 with a loading-model error; when ready it returns HTTP 200 with {"status":"ok"}. A readiness response and a sleep-status response answer different questions. The README documents both endpoints.

Troubleshoot a request that hangs near the sleep threshold
An open GitHub issue filed September 30, 2026 describes a timing-sensitive case in which a request arrives as sleep begins, appears to enter a queue, and is not processed, leaving the client to time out. The reporter associated it with a development build. This is one report, not evidence that every release or platform has a general sleep-transition defect. Check the issue’s current status and the exact llama.cpp release or commit you use. GitHub issue tracker.
The reporter suggested waiting until /props shows the model sleeping before sending a request. Treat that as a reported workaround, not an official guarantee; validate it on your installed build before relying on it.

- Record the llama.cpp release or commit used by the server, especially when investigating behavior that may have changed.
- Run
llama-server --helpfor that build and confirm the supported option names, units, and defaults. - Set the idle threshold and read/write timeout independently in the launch configuration, environment, or preset that your deployment actually uses.
- Observe
/propsfor sleep state and/healthfor loading or readiness; do not use health polling as a way to keep the model awake. - If a request stalls at the transition, compare the timing and behavior with the exact build and current issue status before attributing it to a general bug.
