To recover a YouTube stream after a brief network drop, run FFmpeg under a supervisor or wrapper that restarts the publishing process if it exits. A restart can restore publishing, but it cannot recover missed frames or guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.
Why FFmpeg’s -reconnect flags are not the answer for RTMP output
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, -reconnect_on_network_error, -reconnect_on_http_error, and -reconnect_streamed in its HTTP protocol section. The documentation describes RTMP and RTMPS separately, including an FLV publishing workflow. Those HTTP options should not be treated as general RTMP output retry flags.

For a publishing disconnect, recovery is usually a process-management problem: detect that FFmpeg has stopped or become unhealthy, then restart it with the intended input and YouTube ingest destination. This is operational guidance, not an RTMP reconnect option documented by FFmpeg.
Prepare the YouTube ingest destination
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to use and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions use these two values to connect an encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to publish to your stream.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint when it is available for your stream and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted live delivery in its encoder settings guidance.
- Test the configured stream in the Live Control Room before relying on automatic recovery. For a scheduled event, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then select Go live.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on your input (for example, a capture device, another live feed, or a file) and the ingest URL format YouTube provides. The protocol documentation shows RTMP publishing as an FLV output workflow, but there is no single safe, universal command that fits every input and platform.

Restart FFmpeg with a supervisor or wrapper
Run the publishing process under a service manager, container orchestrator, or wrapper configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Add bounded backoff and logging so a persistent error does not create a rapid restart loop. Restart only when FFmpeg exits or your health check has deliberately declared the publishing process unhealthy.

wait with bounded backoffThis is pseudocode, not a drop-in shell command. Service-manager settings and container restart policies vary by platform; configure them for your deployment and confirm that they supervise the actual FFmpeg publishing process.

Account for the input when restarting
- Live source: A webcam, capture device, or other live input may resume with current content after restart, depending on how the device and input are configured.
- Finite file: Restarting a file-based command can start the file from the beginning. If you need to resume at a particular position, your wrapper or application must manage that position; a basic process restart does not do it automatically.
- Missed media: No restart can restore frames that were not sent during the outage. Recovery can also require YouTube to recognize the incoming feed again, so do not promise a seamless viewer experience or a single uninterrupted event.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after streaming ends, but that statement does not establish how every brief publishing interruption affects continuity.

YouTube’s encoder settings give bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Choose the row matching your actual stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

Test upload bitrate and select a quality your connection can sustain reliably. Reducing resolution or bitrate may help if the available upload capacity fluctuates, though it will not fix every network or ingest failure. A wired connection may help when recurring local Wi-Fi instability is the cause; it will not configure FFmpeg retries or resolve problems elsewhere on the route.
Diagnose a failed recovery
Work through the failure by layer instead of assuming the retry logic is at fault. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, the encoder feed, errors and CPU load, and the outbound internet connection.

After a test disconnect, verify both the FFmpeg logs and the preview or stream-health status in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The restart policy alone cannot establish that viewers saw continuous playback.
