How to Take Full-Page Screenshots of a Members-Only Site After Login in Puppeteer

Log in through the site’s permitted authentication flow, confirm that member-only content has rendered, then call await page.screenshot({ path: 'member-page.png', fullPage: true }). A successful navigation alone does not prove you are logged in. The login method and readiness selector depend on the site.

Use the authentication method the site actually requires

Puppeteer supports browser automation, but it cannot infer a site’s login flow. Use an account and access method you are authorized to use; do not guess at selectors or attempt to bypass MFA, CAPTCHAs, or anti-automation checks.

HTML login form

Navigate to the login page, fill the site’s actual fields, submit its form, then wait for a reliable sign of success, such as a member navigation item or protected-content selector. The example below deliberately leaves credentials and site-specific selectors to your implementation. Supply secrets through environment variables or a secure secret store rather than committing them to source code.

HTTP authentication

page.authenticate({ username, password }) supplies credentials for HTTP authentication; it is not a general-purpose way to fill and submit an HTML login form. Puppeteer notes that this method enables request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. See the Page.authenticate reference.

Existing cookie-backed session

If you already have valid session cookies, add them to the browser or browser context before navigating to the protected URL. Match their domain, path, security, and expiry attributes to the session. Some sites also rely on local storage or server-side session state, and session cookies can expire. Puppeteer’s cookie guide explains reading, setting, and deleting cookies; the Page API reference marks page-level cookie APIs deprecated in favor of browser or browser-context APIs. Use separate browser contexts when you need storage isolation between accounts or tasks.

Run the login, verify access, and capture the full page

Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Replace the example URLs and selectors with those belonging to a site you are permitted to access. This illustrates the sequence; it is not a tested login against a real members-only site.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  await page.goto('https://example.com/login', {
    waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  });

  // Use the site's permitted login flow here, or restore valid cookies
  // into the browser context before navigating to the protected URL.

  await page.goto('https://example.com/members/article', {
    waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
  });

  // Replace this with a selector that appears only after access succeeds.
  await page.waitForSelector('[data-member-content]');

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'member-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}
  1. Launch Puppeteer and create a page or an appropriately isolated browser context.
  2. Authenticate using the method the site supports: submit its HTML form, provide HTTP-auth credentials, or restore a valid session.
  3. Navigate to the member-only URL and wait for evidence that the protected content is present. Check a site-specific selector or another reliable post-login condition.
  4. Capture with fullPage: true, and close the browser in a finally block so errors do not leave a browser process running.

The official screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for navigation with networkidle2. For a specific member page, a content selector can be a more meaningful readiness check than network idleness alone: a page may become network-idle while still showing a login screen or an incomplete application state.

Choose full-page or element capture

fullPage: true asks Puppeteer to capture the whole page. In the current Puppeteer documentation, version 25.12.0, the option is optional and defaults to false, so set it explicitly when you need a full-page image. Without a clip, captureBeyondViewport defaults to false; with a clip, it defaults to true. See the ScreenshotOptions API.

If you only need a component—such as a member card or chart—use an element screenshot instead of capturing the full document:

const memberPanel = await page.waitForSelector('[data-member-panel]');
await memberPanel.screenshot({ path: 'member-panel.png' });

Replace the selector with one from the authorized page. Puppeteer’s ElementHandle screenshot reference notes that Puppeteer scrolls a hidden element into view before capturing it.

Handle lazy content and very long pages

A full-page capture does not guarantee that every application-specific lazy loader has run. Long pages may load images or sections only as the user scrolls. Inspect the resulting image; if content is missing, reproduce the site’s normal scroll or loading behavior before taking the screenshot, then verify the output again.

Very tall pages can also put pressure on browser memory and image output dimensions. There is no single safe maximum established here: practical limits depend on the browser build, page content, and execution environment. If capture fails or the output is unwieldy, consider capturing a specific element or dividing the page into intentional sections.

Troubleshoot failed or misleading captures

  • The image shows a login page. A successful goto() only means navigation completed. Check the final URL and wait for a member-only selector; verify credentials, session validity, and any site-specific post-login state.
  • The login form never submits. Confirm that your selectors match the live form and that the site’s required fields and submission behavior are handled. Form details are site-specific; do not assume HTTP authentication will submit an HTML form.
  • Restored cookies do not grant access. Check cookie domain, path, security, and expiry values. The site may require other browser storage or a server-side session, or the session may have expired.
  • The page never reaches networkidle2. Some pages keep network activity open. Use a site-specific content selector as the success condition rather than relying on network idleness alone.
  • Images or sections are missing. Check whether the site loads them on scroll. Trigger its ordinary lazy-loading behavior before capture and inspect the output.
  • The browser remains running after an error. Put browser shutdown in a finally block, as in the example, so cleanup runs when login or capture throws.

Or skip the browser setup

If you would rather request an image directly, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For an authorized public or otherwise accessible target page, one GET request can return a screenshot or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/members/article -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and authentication. Its cleanup options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This request does not replace a site’s login: protected pages still require an authorized access path supported by the target site and service.

Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
