For an endless HTTP input, put FFmpeg’s reconnect options before the -i that opens that input. The flags can retry certain input interruptions; they do not loop a finished playlist, restart a crashed FFmpeg process, or guarantee YouTube will keep one live event open.
Configure reconnects for an endless HTTP input
Use this as an illustrative starting pattern for a live or endless HTTP source. It is assembled from documented FFmpeg options, not a tested universal command; choose retry behavior for your source and confirm the options exist in your installed build.

INPUT_URLwith the URL of the endless HTTP stream. Keep the reconnect options before the corresponding-i; these are input protocol options. - Replace
...OUTPUT_OPTIONS...with the actual encoder and YouTube output arguments for your workflow. FFmpeg’s input reconnect options do not configure the YouTube destination by themselves. - Check the installed build’s HTTP protocol options with
ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Builds and versions can differ. - Test the complete path and monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health. A successful reconnect at the input does not prove that the output encoder or YouTube event recovered.
The sample retries network errors, 5xx HTTP responses, and EOF, with a 30-second maximum delay for an attempt. Those are policy choices, not a guarantee that retries continue forever or that an outage will be short.

FFmpeg documents these HTTP protocol options in its protocol documentation. The FFmpeg 8.1 HTTP implementation lists a 120-second maximum delay for one attempt, a retry-count default represented as -1, and a 256-second total-delay cap. These are version-specific implementation defaults, not timeless settings; the example overrides the per-attempt delay and leaves retry count and total delay at the installed build’s defaults.

Keep the four reliability layers separate
HTTP input interruption
The reconnect flags apply to FFmpeg’s HTTP input behavior: supported disconnects, selected HTTP responses, network errors, or EOF when configured. They cannot make an unavailable source respond.
Playlist completion or looping
A reconnecting HTTP request is not the same as repeating a completed local file or finite concat list. Make a finite playlist endless at the playlist or demuxer layer appropriate to its format. Do not use -reconnect_at_eof as a general-purpose playlist loop switch.

FFmpeg process and host failure
Protocol retries do not restart FFmpeg after it exits and do not recover a rebooted host. Process supervision and host recovery are separate operational layers.

YouTube ingest and event lifecycle
YouTube’s encoder setup uses the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. The stream key is a credential: treat it like a password and do not expose it in logs or public command examples. FFmpeg input retry is distinct from the encoder’s output connection and YouTube’s event controls. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; reconnect flags do not guarantee a single continuous event beyond that behavior.

RTMP/RTMPS and HLS output
HTTP input reconnect flags are not YouTube HLS ingest settings. YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements concern output ingestion: HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments lasting one to four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Apply those requirements only when using YouTube HLS, not merely because the input is HTTP.
Set up and monitor the YouTube side
- In YouTube’s live encoder setup, use the server URL and stream key assigned to the event, entering them in the encoder’s output configuration.
- Start setup ahead of the planned broadcast, then check the preview before relying on the stream.
- Test encoder failover and monitor stream health. YouTube’s guidance suggests testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
- If you are recording a local archive as part of the workflow, verify that the archive file grows during the stream.
These checks cover more than the FFmpeg HTTP input: the input, encoder output, network, and YouTube event can fail independently.

Troubleshoot common reconnect problems
