How to Configure FFmpeg Audio Normalization for a YouTube Sleep Stream

Use FFmpeg’s loudnorm for a restrained YouTube sleep stream, with a live single-pass setup or a measured two-pass workflow for finished files.

For a YouTube sleep stream, FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter is the practical starting point: use single-pass normalization for a live pipeline, or measure a finished file and apply those measurements in a second pass. A restrained starting target is I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2. That is a suggested setting for quiet ambience—not a YouTube requirement. Listen for pumping or distracting level changes, and check the rendered and uploaded audio before relying on it overnight.

What loudnorm controls—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter implements EBU R128 loudness normalization. Its three principal targets describe different aspects of the sound:

  • I (integrated loudness): the average perceived program level over time, expressed in LUFS.
  • LRA (loudness range): how much loudness varies over time, expressed in LU.
  • TP (true peak): a ceiling for reconstructed signal peaks, expressed in dBTP.

The suggested I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2 is an editorial starting point for a subdued sleep soundscape. It is not a platform specification: YouTube’s official creator guidance reviewed here does not publish an integrated-loudness or true-peak target. FFmpeg’s own defaults—I=-24, LRA=7, and TP=-2—are filter defaults, not YouTube upload rules. See the FFmpeg loudnorm documentation.

Normalization cannot make every ambience equally pleasant or guarantee identical playback everywhere. A target that is too aggressive may raise quiet details or cause audible gain movement. Choose the intended listening level for the actual source, then check its quietest and loudest passages.

Choose a workflow: live stream or finished file

Workflow Best fit What happens Trade-off
Single pass A continuous live stream or a quick file conversion The filter processes the audio as it runs; its dynamic behavior can respond to changing material. One processing pipeline, but you should review transitions and level changes on representative material.
Two pass A completed file when measurement-informed processing and reproducibility matter The first pass measures the whole source. The second uses those measurements and can use linear gain if the constraints allow. Requires an analysis pass and a render pass. If linear mode is incompatible with the target, FFmpeg can fall back to dynamic mode.

Neither method is universally higher quality. The useful distinction is whether the audio is live or finished and whether linear gain is feasible for the file.

-af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=summary"

Place it alongside the input, video, audio-encoding, and streaming-output options in your existing FFmpeg pipeline. The filter supports single-pass use for livestreams; it does not require a full-file measurement beforehand. The 192 kHz upsampling used internally for true-peak detection in dynamic mode is part of the filter’s processing, not necessarily the sample rate you should deliver. Set the output rate explicitly with -ar or aresample when your delivery settings require it.

Before leaving a sleep stream running, listen to representative material: a quiet section, a loud section, and transitions between them. If rain, a fan, or a low drone swells unnaturally or foreground details jump forward during quiet passages, revise the target or processing choice rather than simply pushing the program louder.

Normalize a finished file with two passes

1. Measure the complete source

Run the first pass against the file you intend to stream. The example measures audio from input.mp4 and prints machine-readable results:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:print_format=json" -f null -

Record the JSON values input_i, input_lra, input_tp, input_thresh, and target_offset. These are source-specific measurements; do not copy values from another file.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Apply the measurements when rendering

Replace each uppercase placeholder below with the corresponding numeric result from the measurement pass. Keep the filter’s measurement labels exactly as shown:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -af "loudnorm=I=-18:LRA=7:TP=-2:measured_I=INPUT_I:measured_LRA=INPUT_LRA:measured_TP=INPUT_TP:measured_thresh=INPUT_THRESH:offset=OFFSET:linear=true:print_format=summary" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 output.mp4

Here, INPUT_I comes from input_i, INPUT_LRA from input_lra, INPUT_TP from input_tp, INPUT_THRESH from input_thresh, and OFFSET from target_offset. Do not leave the placeholders in the command. The example copies video, encodes audio as AAC at 192 kbps, and sets the output sample rate to 48 kHz.

Check the final filter summary to confirm that linear mode was actually selected. FFmpeg requires all four measured inputs for linear normalization. It can revert to dynamic mode if the requested target loudness range is below the measured source range or the loudness change would exceed the target true peak. The filter documentation describes the mode and its constraints.

For a WAV output, change the codec and container options to suit that format. For a YouTube upload, the example’s AAC encoding and sample rate fall within the audio guidance below.

Check the output for sleep-stream use

  • Listen across the full range: check the quietest and loudest sections and transitions for pumping, sudden gain changes, or details made distractingly prominent.
  • Measure the rendered file: run loudnorm again with summary or JSON output and verify the output loudness, true peak, and selected normalization mode.
  • Check mono compatibility: listen to a mono fold-down. YouTube warns that stereo audio which folds down poorly can lose quality or be muted on devices that convert stereo playback to mono.
  • Use suitable audio delivery settings: YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance recommends AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and a 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate. These are encoding recommendations, not loudness targets.

Check what viewers hear on YouTube

Playback can vary with player features and viewer settings. YouTube says its Stable volume option balances quiet and loud ranges where available, and that it may be unavailable for some videos. To assess your mix without that feature, inspect playback with Stable volume off when the control is available; see YouTube’s Stable volume information.

For playback troubleshooting, use Stats for Nerds as a diagnostic display, not as proof of a universal LUFS target. YouTube also says certain audio enhancements may be applied, and viewer settings can affect playback. Those behaviors mean creator-side normalization cannot guarantee identical perceived dynamics on every device and account. See Stats for Nerds and YouTube’s audio playback information.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The output is more dynamic than expected FFmpeg fell back from linear to dynamic mode because the target LRA or true-peak constraint was incompatible. Check the filter summary. Confirm all four measured values were entered correctly, then review whether the chosen targets fit the measured source.
Quiet ambience swells or sounds pumped Dynamic processing is changing levels in response to the material, or the target is too aggressive for the soundscape. Listen to quiet sections and transitions; revise the targets for the source and intended playback level rather than treating louder as automatically better.
The output rate is not the rate you intended Internal true-peak processing and output delivery rate are different settings. Set the output sample rate explicitly with -ar or aresample.
Stereo ambience loses quality on some devices The stereo mix may fold down poorly to mono. Listen to a mono fold-down and correct phase or balance problems in the source mix.
Your mix sounds different in YouTube playback Player options, viewer settings, or YouTube audio enhancements may affect playback. Check Stable volume where available and use Stats for Nerds as a diagnostic, while remembering that it does not establish a platform loudness target.
