Where PrestaShop email settings are located
Sign in to the PrestaShop back office and open Advanced Parameters > Email. The page combines the controls you need to operate transactional email:

The exact wording can differ slightly between PrestaShop releases, but the official 1.7 and 8 instructions place the sending controls on this page. A tutorial covering PrestaShop 1.7, 8 and 9 follows the same workflow.
Choose how PrestaShop sends mail
The technical section offers three methods. Select the one that matches the purpose of the store, not merely the option that appears easiest.

PHP mail() has the lowest apparent setup effort, but its result depends on the host’s PHP and mail-server configuration. Custom SMTP requires more values up front, while giving you control over authentication and encryption and a clearer place to correct a failed connection. If your provider supplies SMTP credentials, use those credentials rather than guessing whether PHP mail() is enabled.
Configure custom SMTP step by step
- Open the email page. In the back office, go to Advanced Parameters > Email.
- Select the custom method. In the sending-method control, choose Set my own SMTP parameters.
- Enter the SMTP server. Copy the hostname supplied by your email provider. Do not substitute your website domain unless the provider explicitly tells you to do so.
- Enter the username. This is normally the SMTP account or mailbox identifier specified by the provider. Use the exact spelling and account associated with the service.
- Enter the password. Paste the SMTP password or provider-generated credential. If the provider uses a special application password, use that value instead of the normal account password.
- Choose encryption. Select the encryption type required by the provider, commonly SSL or TLS. Encryption and port are a pair; do not choose one independently of the other.
- Enter the port. Use the number supplied for the selected encryption mode. Never replace a provider’s port with a familiar number simply because it is common elsewhere.
- Save the form. Saving applies the values to the store’s outgoing-mail configuration.
- Send a controlled test. Find Test your email configuration, enter an inbox you can check, and click Send a test email.
- Verify the result. Check the destination inbox and its spam or junk folder. If the message is absent, use the troubleshooting branches below instead of switching randomly between methods.
The official guides advise contacting your hosting company or email provider for the server, account, password, encryption and port values. Those values vary by service, region and account type, so a setting that works for one mailbox is not evidence that it is correct for another.

Gmail does not use the account’s ordinary password for this configuration. A PrestaShop help article dated July 16, 2025 states that you must first enable two-factor authentication on the Gmail account and then create an application password. That generated application password is the credential entered in PrestaShop.

Prepare the Google account
- Turn on two-factor authentication for the Gmail account that will send store messages.
- Create an application password for the store’s SMTP connection.
- Keep the generated application password available while completing the PrestaShop form. Treat it as a credential: do not paste it into a ticket, screenshot or public code sample.
Enter the Gmail values
In Advanced Parameters > Email, select Set my own SMTP parameters and use the values in this table:

Save the form and run Send a test email. If Gmail rejects the connection, confirm that two-factor authentication is still enabled, that the application password was copied correctly, and that the encryption and port remain paired as shown. A regular Gmail password will not replace the application password in this setup.
Test the configuration without guessing
The test control is more useful when you treat it as a sequence with an observable result:

- Save the configuration before testing. Testing unsaved values can lead you to diagnose an older configuration.
- Send the message to an address whose inbox and junk folder you can inspect immediately.
- Look at the sent-email list and logging area on the Email page. These show whether PrestaShop recorded an attempted send, although a recorded attempt does not by itself prove that the recipient accepted the message.
- Allow for normal mailbox filtering before declaring failure, then compare the test result with the provider’s connection requirements.
- Change one setting at a time and send another test. Changing server, password, encryption and port simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the fault.
A successful test establishes that this particular PrestaShop configuration could submit a message at that time. It does not guarantee that every customer message will reach every recipient, so continue to monitor the sent-message records and logs after launch.
Why a test email may not arrive
No connection or timeout
- Recheck the SMTP hostname character for character.
- Confirm that the selected port belongs to the selected encryption mode.
- Ask the host whether outbound SMTP connections are restricted. Some hosting environments block or filter mail connections even when the PrestaShop form is correct.
- Verify that the provider permits SMTP access for the account and has not disabled the connection because of a security policy.
Authentication failure
- Confirm the username format required by the provider; some services require the entire email address.
- Replace an expired or mistyped password with a newly copied credential.
- For Gmail, use an application password created after two-factor authentication was enabled, not the account’s normal password.
- Check for leading or trailing spaces introduced while pasting credentials.
The test is recorded but the inbox is empty
- Inspect spam, junk and other filtered folders.
- Check that the test recipient is spelled correctly and that the mailbox is not over quota.
- Review the provider’s delivery or rejection information if it offers those records.
- Use PrestaShop’s sent-email list and logs to distinguish a message that was never submitted from one that was submitted and later filtered.
Messages work intermittently
- Look for connection limits, provider throttling or host-level restrictions rather than repeatedly changing the password.
- Confirm that all store modules and scheduled jobs use the same store email identity and SMTP configuration.
- Capture the time of a failed test and compare it with the logs and provider records so support can trace the event.
If mail or TLS problems persist after the values have been verified, PrestaShop’s troubleshooting guidance recommends considering a dedicated third-party email solution. It names Mailgun, Mailjet, Sendinblue and Mailchimp as examples of services merchants can evaluate. A dedicated service can provide its own authenticated SMTP endpoint and delivery records, separating transactional mail from limitations in shared hosting.
PHP mail() versus custom SMTP
Both methods can appear to work in a small test, but they give a merchant different control when a store is public.

For a public shop, custom SMTP is generally the more transparent choice when the provider supports it. PHP mail() remains reasonable for a host-managed environment that has been verified in production, but a merchant should know which host team owns the transport and where its logs are kept.

The PrestaShop 8 guide adds optional DKIM controls under Advanced Parameters > Emails. The fields are a DKIM domain, selector and private key. A receiving mail system can use the resulting signature to verify that the message was signed for the stated domain, which helps prevent spoofing.
Information to obtain before entering DKIM
- The DKIM domain specified by the mail provider or your domain administrator.
- The selector that identifies the DKIM key.
- The private key supplied or generated for that selector.
Enter these values only when they have been issued for the domain and sending service you are using. A private key is sensitive: restrict access to it and do not include it in screenshots or public documentation. DKIM does not replace correct SMTP authentication; it addresses message signing while SMTP controls how PrestaShop submits the message.
When a dedicated provider or module makes sense
Dedicated transactional email service
Consider a dedicated service when your host repeatedly blocks SMTP or TLS connections, when delivery troubleshooting needs provider-side records, or when store traffic makes a shared host’s mail transport unsuitable. PrestaShop’s troubleshooting article lists Mailgun, Mailjet, Sendinblue and Mailchimp as examples to investigate. Compare the service’s current SMTP instructions, account verification rules and sending limits before changing the store.
PrestaShop SMTP module
A module can add a guided integration when the native form is difficult to maintain or when a provider requires a workflow beyond the built-in fields. PrestaHero’s Easy SMTP vendor documentation describes compatibility with PrestaShop 1.6.x, 1.7.x, 8.x and 9.x. Compatibility is a capability claim from that vendor document, not a guarantee that every provider, PHP version or module release will work together. Verify the module’s current compatibility, maintenance status and terms before installation, and keep a rollback plan for the native configuration.
Version and environment considerations
- PrestaShop 1.7: The official guide places method selection, SMTP fields and the test control under Advanced Parameters > Email.
- PrestaShop 8: The same sending workflow applies, with optional DKIM configuration described under Advanced Parameters > Emails.
- PrestaShop 9: A PrestaShop tutorial covers the same three sending choices and the distinction between PHP mail() and custom SMTP. Confirm the labels in your installed release before giving staff a procedure to follow.
- Hosting differences: The host may impose outbound connection restrictions, rewrite mail settings or provide its own relay. Ask the host or email provider for values specific to your account rather than copying a configuration from another store.
- Staging stores: Use Never send e-mails only when the purpose is to suppress delivery during testing. Switch to a real, verified method before the store becomes public.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a mailbox or service account dedicated to store sending when your provider supports that arrangement.
- Store SMTP passwords and Gmail application passwords in restricted administrative access, never in public code or screenshots.
- Revoke and replace credentials when an administrator or agency no longer needs access.
- Keep encryption and port aligned with the provider’s current instructions; do not assume an old value remains valid forever.
- Send a test after changing the provider, mailbox, password, encryption, port or domain.
- Review sent-email records and logs after major store changes so a failed integration is found before customers report missing order messages.
- If you configure DKIM in PrestaShop 8, protect the private key and document which domain and selector it belongs to.
- Keep a written recovery path: the provider’s SMTP hostname, account owner, support contact and the last known working configuration.
A practical decision path
- If the store is not meant to send anything yet, select Never send e-mails temporarily and record that it must be changed before launch.
- If the host explicitly provides and supports PHP mail(), test that method in a non-public environment first.
- If you have provider credentials, select custom SMTP and enter every value exactly as supplied.
- If the provider is Gmail, complete two-factor authentication and create the application password before entering the Gmail server, TLS and port values.
- If native SMTP repeatedly fails because of host or TLS limitations, evaluate a dedicated transactional provider.
- If staff need a guided provider integration or multiple service connectors, evaluate a maintained PrestaShop SMTP module and verify its release compatibility.
The reliable finish for any path is the same: save, send a test, inspect the destination and PrestaShop records, correct one variable at a time, and only then rely on the configuration for customer-facing mail.
