How to Configure Death Penalty Settings on a Hytale Server

Hytale death penalties are set per world in universe/worlds//config.json under GameplayConfig. This guide explains keep-inventory, full-loss, and percentage-based modes, safe editing, validation, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hytale death penalties are configured per world in that world’s config.json. Stop the server, open universe/worlds/<your world>/config.json, add a Death object inside GameplayConfig, then choose ItemsLossMode: None keeps the inventory, All drops all items, and Configured applies item and durability percentages. The Death block is not present in the default file described by current hosting guides, so it must be added manually.

Where Hytale stores death-penalty settings

Death settings are world-specific rather than a single server-wide switch. For each world, edit:

universe/worlds/<your world>/config.json

Inside that file, the settings belong in a Death object under GameplayConfig. Replace <your world> with the actual directory name. If your server has several worlds, a change in one file does not automatically change the others; repeat the configuration for every world that should use the same policy.

Hytale is in Early Access, and configuration keys can change between builds. The values below are the ones described by current third-party hosting guides, not a guaranteed permanent API. As of 14 October 2026, no official Hytale documentation confirming the complete death-configuration schema was located. Keep a backup of the original file and recheck the file after major server updates.

What each setting does

Key Purpose Accepted values or range When it is used
ItemsLossMode Chooses the inventory-loss rule applied on death. None, All, or Configured Always; it determines whether the percentage fields matter.
ItemsAmountLossPercentage Sets the percentage of each item stack removed. 0 to 100 Only when ItemsLossMode is Configured.
ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage Sets the percentage of current durability removed from items. 0 to 100 Only when ItemsLossMode is Configured.
RespawnController.Type Chooses the respawn controller behavior. HomeOrSpawnPoint is shown in a guide sample. Use the sample type only if it is supported by your build; a complete list of valid types has not been verified.

None: keep the inventory

Set ItemsLossMode to None when players should retain their full inventory after death. This is the direct keep-inventory configuration. The percentage fields do not control the result in this mode.

All: drop all items

Set ItemsLossMode to All when the death penalty should remove all carried items. This is the full-loss option. Do not rely on percentage values to soften it while this mode is selected; use Configured instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configured: apply partial loss

Configured activates both percentage fields. ItemsAmountLossPercentage is the percentage removed from each item stack. For example, a value of 50.0 means the guides describe half of each stack being lost. ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage is the percentage of an item’s current durability lost on death. Both values accept 0 through 100.

The available material does not specify how fractional items are rounded, how zero-item stacks are handled, or whether every item category follows identical rounding rules. Test the exact build and gameplay setup you operate before promising players a particular result for small stacks.

Prepare before changing the file

  • Stop the server completely. A running server may write its in-memory configuration back to disk and overwrite your edit.
  • Identify the world directory. Confirm which world players use and locate its matching directory below universe/worlds.
  • Make a backup. Copy config.json to a dated backup before editing. Keep the backup outside the file’s normal load path so the server cannot mistake it for the active configuration.
  • Use a plain-text or JSON-aware editor. Do not use a word processor that inserts typographic quotation marks.
  • Preserve existing properties. Add the Death object inside the existing GameplayConfig object; do not replace unrelated world settings.
  • Plan a validation test. Decide which mode and percentages you expect before restarting, so you can verify the result with expendable items.

Step-by-step: add the Death block

1. Stop the Hytale server

Use your host panel’s stop control or the server’s normal shutdown command. Wait until the process has exited and the console no longer reports that the world is saving. Editing while the process is still running risks losing the change.

2. Open the correct world configuration

Navigate to universe/worlds/<your world>/config.json. The directory name may not match the public name players use, so verify it against the world selected by your server startup configuration or hosting panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Find GameplayConfig

Search the file for the exact, case-sensitive key GameplayConfig. The death settings belong inside that object. If your file has no GameplayConfig object, do not guess at a new top-level structure; first compare the file with the configuration format produced by your current build or restore the backup.

4. Add the block without deleting existing settings

Merge a block like this into GameplayConfig. The example is deliberately minimal; retain every other property already present in your file.

{"GameplayConfig":{"Death":{"RespawnController":{"Type":"HomeOrSpawnPoint"},"ItemsLossMode":"Configured","ItemsAmountLossPercentage":10.0,"ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage":10.0}}}

If GameplayConfig already contains settings, add a comma after the preceding property and insert "Death":{...} before the object’s closing brace. Do not create a second GameplayConfig object or a second Death key.

5. Select the policy you want

Choose exactly one of the three modes:

  • Keep everything: change ItemsLossMode to None.
  • Lose everything: change it to All.
  • Lose a percentage: use Configured and set both percentage fields to values from 0.0 through 100.0.

When using Configured, a value of 0.0 for both percentage fields is cited as an alternative way to disable item loss. The direct and less ambiguous keep-inventory setting remains ItemsLossMode set to None.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check JSON syntax and capitalization

Validate the complete file before saving it. Check matching braces, commas between properties, straight quotation marks, and the exact capitalization of GameplayConfig, Death, ItemsLossMode, ItemsAmountLossPercentage, ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage, RespawnController, and Type. Values such as None, All, Configured, and HomeOrSpawnPoint are also case-sensitive in the examples.

7. Save, restart, and test

Save the file, start the server, and watch the startup output for configuration or JSON errors. Join the affected world and perform a controlled death using items you can afford to lose. Check both the number of items and the durability of a test item when using Configured. Repeat the test in every world whose file you changed.

Useful configurations

Goal ItemsLossMode ItemsAmountLossPercentage ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage
Players keep their complete inventory None Ignored in this mode Ignored in this mode
Players lose all items All Ignored in this mode Ignored in this mode
Players lose 10% of each stack and 10% of current durability Configured 10.0 10.0
Players lose half of each stack Configured 50.0 Choose a separate value from 0.0 to 100.0
Configured mode with no percentage loss Configured 0.0 0.0

The last row is cited by one hosting guide as effectively disabling item loss, but it still depends on Configured being interpreted as described by your server build. If the objective is simply to keep inventory, None expresses that intent directly.

How to choose a penalty

Use None for cooperative or building-focused worlds

This mode removes item-loss pressure while leaving the server’s death and respawn flow in place. It is the clearest choice when recovering gear is not part of the world’s design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use All for a hard survival rule

This mode creates the strongest inventory consequence described by the guides. Communicate it clearly to players and test with a disposable loadout before enabling it on an established world.

Use Configured for a graduated penalty

Partial percentages let you separate stack loss from durability loss. For example, you can remove a small share of resources while applying a different durability penalty. The two fields are independent, but both are ignored unless the mode is Configured.

Troubleshooting

The change disappears after a restart

Confirm that the server was stopped before editing. A running process can overwrite the file with its previous in-memory values. Reapply the edit while the server is stopped, then start it only after validating the JSON.

The server refuses to load the configuration

Restore the backup if necessary, then inspect commas, braces, quotation marks, duplicate keys, and accidental comments. JSON does not accept comments inside the configuration object. Add the Death block incrementally and validate after each change.

Players see no change

  • Check that you edited the active world’s directory, not another world with a similar name.
  • Confirm that Death is nested under GameplayConfig.
  • Check the exact spelling and capitalization of every key and mode value.
  • If you selected None or All, remember that percentage fields do not alter those modes.
  • Restart after saving; do not assume a running process has reloaded the file.

Configured percentages behave unexpectedly

Verify that both values are between 0 and 100 and that ItemsLossMode is exactly Configured. Test with a sufficiently large stack and a clearly damaged item because the available guides do not document rounding behavior for small quantities or low durability.

The respawn setting does not work

HomeOrSpawnPoint is shown in a guide sample, but the complete set of valid RespawnController.Type values has not been verified. Treat that value as build-sensitive. If inventory loss works but respawn behavior does not, remove or restore the respawn sub-object from your backup and verify which type your current build accepts before changing other death settings.

About the alleged in-game death-penalty menu

One hosting guide describes a separate interface labeled “Inventory Penalty on Death,” with sliders for resource and durability loss. That description does not match the config.json keys above and may refer to a different settings menu, server version, or host interface. Its applicability cannot be confirmed from the available material.

Use the file-based method when you need a reproducible per-world configuration, and do not assume that a slider in a control panel writes the same keys until you inspect the resulting file or confirm the behavior in your build. Avoid setting both systems independently without testing, because the relationship between the menu and config.json is not established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managing more than one world

Because the configuration is stored in each world’s directory, treat every world as a separate policy. To apply keep-inventory behavior everywhere, set ItemsLossMode to None in each applicable file. To run different rules, leave each world’s file with its intended mode and percentages, then test deaths while connected to the corresponding world.

Keep dated backups when changing multiple files. If an update changes the schema, you can identify which world was edited, restore its previous file, and migrate one world at a time instead of risking every world simultaneously.

Version and maintenance cautions

  • Hytale’s Early Access status means names, defaults, and placement may change between builds.
  • Current guides disagree about exact placement and default values, so the sample block should be treated as illustrative rather than a guaranteed generated default.
  • The available material does not establish a complete list of respawn-controller types.
  • No official Hytale document currently confirms the full schema described here; verify behavior after updates.

For a stable operational process, record the server build beside each backup, validate the file before every restart, and perform a controlled death test after upgrading the server.
