To change a Rust server’s map, set server.seed and server.worldsize in server.cfg, the launch command, or your host’s Wipe panel. Stop the server, remove the existing map files, and start it again. Rust will then generate a new map using the requested values.

World seed
server.seed is the integer Rust uses to build the procedural layout. Changing it changes the positions and shapes of terrain features such as mountains, rivers and monuments. The accepted range is 0 through 2,147,483,647. The value in the Facepunch example launch line is 1234; that number is only an example, not a recommended seed.
World size
server.worldsize controls the map’s dimensions. The published range is 1,000 to 6,000. A larger map gives players more room to spread out and generally takes more CPU time, memory and storage activity to generate and run.

Do not assume a universal default
Hosting references disagree about the usual starting size: MintServers lists 3,000, while Cybrancee lists 4,000. Neither establishes an official Facepunch default. Check the value currently loaded by your server console instead of relying on a host’s template. Seed behavior also differs between panels: some treat seed 0 as automatic, while others save a random seed during installation.
Choose values before you wipe
Changing a map is disruptive because every monument and terrain coordinate can move. Decide the target values, announce the maintenance window, and make a backup before stopping the server.

Practical sizing guidance
One hosting guide suggests roughly 3,000 for about 50–100 players and fast-paced PvP. The same guide suggests 4,500 or larger for servers supporting more than 300 players, cars and helicopters. Treat those figures as operational guidance from a host, not a performance guarantee: plugins, entity counts, tick rate, hardware and player behavior can change the result.
- Use a smaller value when you want encounters to happen more often and your hardware or population is modest.
- Use a larger value when a high population needs room to spread out or vehicles need longer travel routes.
- Increase size cautiously and monitor generation time, memory use and CPU load after the wipe.
Method 1: edit server.cfg
This method is suitable when you manage the server files directly and want the values to persist independently of a particular startup shortcut.

- Stop the Rust server cleanly from the control panel, service manager or console. Do not edit or delete world files while the process is still running.
- Open the server’s
server.cfgfile in a text editor. - Add or replace one line for each setting, using plain integers:
server.seed 1234
server.worldsize 4000- Save the file and check that there is only one active line for each setting. A later duplicate line can override the value you intended to use.
- Continue to the map-file cleanup section below before starting the server.
Method 2: set the values on the launch command
Launch parameters are useful for a service, script or container that constructs the startup command. Rust launch options normally use a plus sign before each server variable.
+server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 4000- Stop the server.
- Edit the startup command, service definition or script that actually launches Rust.
- Place the two parameters in that command and remove conflicting values from older scripts or panel-generated arguments.
- Save the command, delete the old map files, and restart.
If both a configuration file and launch command define a setting, verify which one your host or startup wrapper applies last. A server that starts successfully can still load an unexpected seed when two locations disagree.
Method 3: use a hosting panel
Many game-server panels expose the seed on a Wipe tab rather than asking you to edit files.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the Wipe tab or the server-configuration page.
- Enter the seed and world size within the supported ranges.
- Save the settings.
- Run the panel’s map-wipe action, or perform the file cleanup yourself if the panel only changes configuration.
- Start the server and watch the console until world generation finishes.
Panel behavior is provider-specific. One provider says a map wipe should be run after changing size so the new dimensions are generated; that is not a universal Facepunch rule for every panel. Confirm that the wipe option removes map data only and does not include a blueprint or player-data reset.

Delete the old map files, not the player database
Seed and size are read when Rust creates a map. Editing either value while retaining the old world does not convert that world. The safest sequence is to stop the process, back up the server folder, remove the map files, and then start the server.
Files to remove
In the server’s rust-server folder, delete the expanding world files with .map and .sav extensions that belong to the current map. File names can vary with the server identity and installation, so identify the files associated with that world rather than deleting unrelated logs, plugins or configuration.
Files to keep
Keep every relevant .db file. Those databases hold player progression and blueprints. Removing them resets learned blueprints to the default set and may discard other persistent player data, depending on the server setup.
Why the order matters
- Stop Rust completely and wait until the process and file handles close.
- Create a dated backup of the server folder, including the database files.
- Delete only the current map’s
.mapand.savfiles. - Confirm the new seed and size are saved in the configuration, launch command or panel.
- Start the server and allow the initial generation to complete before players connect.
If you change the values but leave the old world files in place, a host guide reports that Rust can stop with a World File Mismatch error. A clean map-file removal resolves the usual mismatch while preserving progression when the databases remain intact.

Verify that the new world loaded
Check the console values
After startup, inspect the in-game or server console for the loaded server.seed and server.worldsize values. You can issue the server.worldsize command in the console to check the current setting; compare the displayed value with the one you intended. Check the seed in the same way through your server’s console or configuration output.
Check generation and the first connection
- Wait for world-generation messages to finish and for the server to reach its normal listening state.
- Connect as an administrator and confirm that the map has the expected scale and that familiar monuments are no longer at their old coordinates when the seed changed.
- Have a regular player verify that inventory, progression and blueprints are still present. If blueprints are gone, a database was deleted or reset during the wipe.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server reports “World File Mismatch”
- Stop the server again.
- Check that the old
.mapand.savfiles were actually removed from the activerust-serverfolder. - Look for a second server installation or a panel path pointing to a different folder.
- Verify that the seed and size are valid integers, then start the server with one consistent set of values.
The map looks unchanged
The old world probably survived the configuration edit. Confirm that the wipe removed the active map files, not a backup directory. Also check for duplicate settings in server.cfg, a launch script and the panel; the last-applied value can override the one you changed.
The server will not start after the change
Inspect the startup log for a malformed line, an out-of-range integer or a typo in the variable name. Use a seed from 0 to 2,147,483,647 and a world size from 1,000 to 6,000. Restore the backup if necessary, correct one setting at a time, and regenerate the map only after the configuration is valid.
Players lost blueprints
Map wiping and blueprint wiping are different operations. Restore the backed-up .db files if they were removed, then avoid any panel option labeled blueprint wipe, wipe all data or similar. Recovery depends on whether the host created a usable database backup.

Changing seed or size requires the first operation. Do not select the second unless you intentionally want every player to relearn blueprints.
Planning the next wipe
Announce what will change
Tell players the planned maintenance time, target size, target seed policy and whether blueprints will survive. A map wipe changes routes, monument locations and base-site planning, even when player databases are preserved.

Save the final seed and size in your administration notes or deployment script. Recording the integers makes it possible to reproduce the same layout after a rollback or test deployment.
Test panel automation
If a host offers an automatic wipe, determine whether it deletes only map files, whether it preserves .db files, and whether it runs before or after the new settings are saved. A panel that wipes first and applies settings later can generate the wrong world, so verify the post-start console values.
