To run Claude Code through your AWS account, enable its Bedrock mode, set an AWS region explicitly, and provide working AWS credentials plus permission to invoke the Claude model you intend to use. The key setting is CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1. Amazon Bedrock is distinct from Claude Platform on AWS, so use Bedrock’s model-access and credential setup—not the other service’s workspace or sign-in flow.
Before you configure Claude Code
You need an AWS account with Amazon Bedrock enabled, a region that supports the model you want, and access to that model. AWS notes that access can depend on Marketplace permissions, a valid payment method, and—depending on the model and access path—submitting Anthropic’s first-time use-case information. AWS says that first-time-use requirement does not apply to models accessed through the bedrock-mantle endpoint. Check AWS’s current model access instructions and model catalog for your account and target region; availability and access requirements can change.

These are separate checks: having AWS credentials does not by itself grant access to invoke a particular Anthropic model. You need both an accepted credential mechanism and the necessary account-level model access and IAM permissions.
Configure credentials and enable Bedrock mode
Claude Code uses the AWS SDK default credential chain for this workflow. Use the credential mechanism approved for your organization, such as an AWS CLI profile, environment credentials, an SSO profile after signing in, or an Amazon Bedrock bearer token. Anthropic’s Bedrock setup guide documents these options and the relevant environment variables.

For an SSO profile, first authenticate with the AWS CLI:
aws sso login --profile your-profileThen set the Bedrock mode and region in the shell where you launch Claude Code. The region must be supplied as AWS_REGION; for this Claude Code configuration, do not rely on a region specified only in the AWS config file.

Choose a region where your intended model or inference profile is available. If you use a named AWS CLI profile, set AWS_PROFILE to its name in the same shell as appropriate for your setup.

Anthropic’s guide also documents static AWS environment credentials and AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK. Avoid putting long-lived secrets in shell history, source control, or shared configuration; prefer the credential method your organization manages.
Choose a model identifier if you need an override
Claude Code can use ANTHROPIC_MODEL and ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL to override model selection. Anthropic’s guide shows Bedrock model IDs and inference profile ARNs as possible values. Use the exact identifier available to your account and region, and check AWS’s current model catalog and inference-profile documentation before setting it.
The setup guide’s displayed default examples include Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku identifiers. Treat those as historical examples rather than current model recommendations: model availability and identifiers may change. For on-demand throughput errors, Anthropic advises specifying the model by inference profile ID rather than using a bare model ID.

Grant the required IAM permissions
The IAM principal used by Claude Code needs permission to call Bedrock and, when applicable, list inference profiles. Anthropic’s example policy includes these actions:
bedrock:InvokeModelbedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStreambedrock:ListInferenceProfiles
Scope resources to the inference profiles and application inference profiles the user or service actually needs. Anthropic’s guide provides the ARN resource patterns; narrow them to the specific profiles in use rather than granting broad access where possible.
IAM permissions do not replace account-level model access or any required Marketplace setup. If a call is denied, verify both the IAM action/resource policy and the AWS account’s access to the selected Anthropic model.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
Claude Code does not use Bedrock
Confirm that CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1 is set in the environment of the process that launches Claude Code. Check that AWS_REGION is also explicitly set there; a region in the AWS config file alone is not sufficient for this Bedrock configuration.
The model or inference profile is unavailable in the region
Check the AWS model catalog and inference profiles available in the selected region. Use a supported region and a model or profile identifier available there. If the small/fast model is intended to run in another region, set ANTHROPIC_SMALL_FAST_MODEL_AWS_REGION accordingly.

Specify the model using an inference profile ID. A plain model ID may not be the right identifier for the throughput path being used.

You see an access-denied error
Check that the active AWS identity has the required invocation action and that its resource scope covers the model or inference profile. Separately confirm account-level access, Marketplace prerequisites, and any required first-time use-case submission. A credential can authenticate successfully while still lacking permission to use the model.
Make sure you selected Amazon Bedrock, not Claude Platform on AWS
These are separate AWS-hosted routes for Claude. AWS operates Amazon Bedrock, which exposes Bedrock APIs such as Converse and InvokeModel. Anthropic operates Claude Platform on AWS, which uses the Anthropic Messages API. Their authentication, API surfaces, data-processing arrangements, feature availability, and compliance considerations differ. AWS describes the distinction in its service comparison.
Choose Bedrock when your organization specifically requires AWS-operated inference or AWS as the sole data processor, or is evaluating named AWS compliance programs. Do not treat that as a blanket compliance guarantee: confirm the service, program, configuration, and eligibility requirements that apply to your organization.

AWS also documents an enterprise Claude Code solution using OIDC-based identity and access management for teams that want centralized control and observability; that organizational pattern is optional, not a prerequisite for a direct setup.
