MediaPackage packages live input for playback by viewers; YouTube HLS ingestion expects an encoder to upload playlists and media segments to a YouTube-provided HTTPS endpoint. For an AWS-native path, configure MediaLive to send an HLS output to YouTube. Use MediaPackage separately if you also need a playback origin for your audience.
Why MediaPackage is not the YouTube output
These services have different roles and opposite sides of the delivery path. MediaPackage receives a live input from an upstream encoder, packages it into a playback presentation, and serves that presentation over HTTPS when a player requests it. YouTube HLS ingestion, by contrast, requires an encoder to upload live playlists and media segments to the ingestion URL provided for the selected YouTube stream.

A MediaPackage playback URL is therefore not a substitute for YouTube’s HLS ingestion URL. AWS documents an AWS Elemental MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS workflow; MediaPackage can remain a separate origin for viewers who need a separately hosted playback endpoint. The following is the high-level AWS workflow, not a promise that every console label or destination string in the older AWS example remains unchanged. Use the URL currently shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

- Create or select an HLS stream in YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key and choose HLS as the stream protocol. Copy the generated Stream URL and, if you configure redundant ingest, the Backup server URL. The HLS URL begins with HTTPS and is specific to the selected stream setup; do not reuse a static example URL as a universal endpoint. For HDR, leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
- Set up the MediaLive input and channel. Configure the live input that supplies your program and create the channel to encode it. The exact input depends on your production source and is separate from the YouTube destination.
- Add an HLS output group for YouTube. In the MediaLive channel output configuration, add an HLS output group, set its destination from the current YouTube HLS Stream URL, and choose the HLS basic PUT option in the CDN settings, following the current AWS console guidance. AWS’s published example uses a two-second segment setting; YouTube permits segments from one to four seconds.
- Match the encoded output to YouTube’s HLS profile. Configure video, audio, muxing and GOP settings to satisfy the current requirements and match the selected stream profile. The constraints are detailed below. Confirm that your source, encoder settings and target profile are compatible before starting the channel.
- Start the channel and verify the YouTube ingest. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream status. A successful MediaLive channel start alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving and accepting the output.
Preserve YouTube’s HLS format and delivery constraints
YouTube’s current HLS setup page and HLS ingestion developer guide describe related requirements. Use the selected stream’s current instructions if a setting or profile differs.
- Transport and segments: Upload over HTTPS using POST or PUT. Use TS segments, a segment duration from one to four seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte-range mode. HTTPS is the allowed encryption layer; do not add separate segment encryption.
- Media format: The developer guide specifies muxed M2TS containing video and audio, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube’s consumer setup help also lists AC3 and EAC3 audio support for HLS. Choose the audio format supported by the target profile and your encoder rather than assuming every listed format is interchangeable in every setup.
- HDR: The developer guide’s HDR requirements include HEVC, 10-bit PQ or HLG, and Rec. 2020 color primaries. In Live Control Room, leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked for HDR.
- Latency: HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, so it has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. Choosing HLS disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode.
The AWS blog’s two-second segment value is an example within YouTube’s allowed range, not a requirement for every channel. Its specific MediaLive console flow was published on 2021-04-14; confirm current console labels and settings before relying on that walkthrough.

When MediaPackage belongs in the workflow
Add MediaPackage only if you need a separate playback origin for viewers or another downstream client. In that arrangement, the upstream encoder supplies MediaPackage using an input path supported by the MediaPackage generation you use; MediaLive separately sends the YouTube HLS output to YouTube. Validate the YouTube stream and the MediaPackage playback presentation independently.
MediaPackage v2
Current MediaPackage v2 documentation covers HLS and CMAF live inputs, AWS Signature Version 4 authorization and channel policy behavior, plus TS/HLS or CMAF endpoints. AWS describes v2 as dynamically packaging output when a downstream player requests it. Check the v2 supported inputs and outputs and the v2 live processing flow for the path appropriate to your channel.

Legacy MediaPackage live guide
The older live guide describes a different live-input flow, including HLS over WebDAV with digest authentication. Do not combine its endpoint assumptions or console steps with MediaPackage v2 instructions. Consult the legacy live supported codecs and input types only when working with that generation.
Validate each delivery path and troubleshoot failures
Check the YouTube ingest and any MediaPackage viewer playback as separate systems: the sources document their respective requirements, not a single end-to-end result for every AWS account, channel or configuration.

- YouTube does not show a preview: Verify that MediaLive is sending to the current Stream URL copied from the selected HLS stream, that the correct stream setup is active, and that the output is using HTTPS POST or PUT. Do not substitute a MediaPackage playback URL.
- YouTube reports an unsupported format: Check the TS segment format, muxed M2TS video/audio, video codec, audio codec, closed GOP, frame rate and HDR profile against the selected HLS requirements. Confirm segment duration is within one to four seconds.
- Playlist or segment delivery is rejected: Check that the playlist is rolling and has no more than five outstanding segments, byte-range mode is off, and separate encryption is not enabled. Recheck the destination and upload method.
- Playback works from MediaPackage but YouTube is offline: This is consistent with the two services having separate roles. A valid playback manifest proves neither that MediaLive is uploading to YouTube nor that YouTube accepts that upload; inspect Live Control Room status and the MediaLive HLS output destination.
- YouTube works but the audience playback fails: Check the MediaPackage input path for the generation in use, the origin endpoint and the playback manifest independently of YouTube’s status.
