To change what Windows 11 does when you plug in a USB flash drive, external hard drive, or memory card, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay. From there you can turn AutoPlay on or off for all media and devices, and pick a default action for removable drives and for memory cards separately.
Open the AutoPlay page
- Select Start, then select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then select AutoPlay. Microsoft’s support documentation gives this route in its guidance on Windows Settings navigation: Microsoft Support, Windows Settings guidance for removable drives and memory cards.
Understand the three controls on the page
The AutoPlay page holds three separate controls. Changing one does not change the others, so it helps to know which one you need before you touch anything.

| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Use AutoPlay for all media and devices (switch) | Master on/off switch for AutoPlay across media and devices | Turn it off if you never want Windows to act automatically when media or devices connect |
| Removable drive (default menu) | Sets the action Windows takes when a USB flash drive or external drive connects | Change this to stop a particular prompt or action for USB drives |
| Memory card (default menu) | Sets the action Windows takes when a memory card is inserted | Change this separately if SD or other memory cards behave differently from USB drives |
Microsoft’s Windows settings catalog lists the master switch separately from the category defaults, so the master switch and the removable-drive default are not the same setting. Turning the master switch off is not a way to choose a specific action for removable drives, and choosing a removable-drive action does not re-enable AutoPlay if the master switch is off.
Choose a default for removable drives
- On the AutoPlay page, make sure Use AutoPlay for all media and devices is on if you want the default actions to run.
- Open the Removable drive menu.
- Select the action you want from the choices shown on your PC.
The menu choices can differ by Windows build and by the device connected, and Microsoft’s guidance confirms that a default can be chosen without listing every option. Select from what your screen shows rather than relying on a fixed list from another article or a different PC.

Change the memory card default
Open the Memory card menu on the same page and choose its action. Microsoft’s settings documentation describes memory cards as having their own default selector, so a change to the removable-drive setting will not affect how an inserted SD card behaves.
Troubleshooting
- The AutoPlay page is missing. Check that you are in Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Interface labels can change between Windows 11 updates, so search the Settings app for “AutoPlay” if the path differs on your build.
- Windows still opens a drive automatically after you changed the default. Confirm the master switch is on and that you changed the menu for the correct device type (removable drive or memory card). A card reader may present an SD card as a removable drive, so check the setting for the device type that actually appears in File Explorer.
- You want to stop all automatic actions. Turn off Use AutoPlay for all media and devices. This is the single switch that covers every category.
AutoPlay does not replace safe removal
AutoPlay only controls what Windows does when a drive or card is connected. It does not protect files when you unplug the device. Microsoft advises using Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting USB flash drives and external hard drives to avoid losing data: Microsoft Support, Safely remove hardware in Windows. In Windows 11 you can also select the eject icon for the drive in File Explorer, or use the safe-removal option in the taskbar notification area, before unplugging.

Verify your changes
Insert a USB drive after you make changes. If Windows still prompts you or acts differently, return to the AutoPlay page and check which menu you edited. The settings apply to the device type shown in the menu, so one change may not cover every device you use.
