Enable 3CX alerts in Windows Settings, customize call shortcuts in the Softphone’s Settings, and decide whether you need the app to remain in the background or be deployed at sign-in. Those are separate settings: Windows controls notification permission, while the app’s tray behavior controls whether it stays running. The current user-facing auto-launch-at-sign-in control and its path are not established in 3CX’s available official guidance, so avoid relying on instructions written for the older Windows Client.
Turn on 3CX notifications in Windows
3CX’s published instructions direct users to Windows notification settings rather than to a separate in-app notification switch:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for 3CX. If the app appears in the list of apps, confirm its individual notification switch is on.
- If alerts still do not appear, review the PC’s notification settings and confirm Windows allows 3CX to send notifications.
3CX describes the Softphone as able to work in the background and notify users about incoming calls and messages without the app window open. That design does not override Windows notification permissions or guarantee that every alert will appear under every PC configuration. 3CX’s March 2024 announcement describes the background behavior, and its April 2025 chat guidance points users to Windows notification settings.

Open the installed 3CX Softphone’s Settings and locate its hotkeys controls. The exact labels or location can vary by build, so do not assume the older Windows Client’s menu path applies to the current Softphone. If the controls are missing or named differently, check the installed production build and any instructions supplied by your administrator.

3CX says hotkeys can be customized for these actions:
- Open the dialer.
- Answer a call.
- Make a blind transfer or an attended transfer.
- Hold or resume a call.
- Divert an incoming call to voicemail.
- Hang up or decline a call.
The shortcuts are documented as usable while the app is minimized to the taskbar or system tray. The current controls and supported actions are described in 3CX’s Windows Softphone announcement. Its build history records a hotkeys-page fix in the V5.8 beta entry from August 2026; beta behavior should not be treated as confirmed production behavior. The older Windows Client manual dates from 2023 and covers a different interface.

Choose what “startup” means for your setup
Keeping the app available, making it launch when you sign in, and deploying it through domain policy are different tasks:

The background/tray distinction and the Exit action are described in 3CX’s announcement. The user-level launch-at-sign-in setting should not be inferred from that behavior: an app that can remain running in the background does not necessarily launch automatically after a Windows sign-in.

For administrators deploying through Group Policy
3CX’s documented domain deployment approach uses an MSIX package and PowerShell script on a network share, configured through Group Policy startup and logon scripts. The guide lists fully updated Windows Server 2025 and fully updated Windows 11 clients as prerequisites for that particular procedure; these are not a claim that the Softphone itself runs only on those Windows versions. The guide also lists command-line options including --host, --echo-cancellation, --ringer-volume, and --mic-gain. The Softphone must be installed and fully closed before applying those settings; running the commands launches the app. These options address provisioning, audio, and integrations—not hotkeys or a user-level launch-at-sign-in preference.

Optional: choose call audio devices
If you are configuring the PC for calls as well as alerts and shortcuts, 3CX’s troubleshooting guidance recommends selecting a headset for microphone, speaker, and ringing roles in audio settings. Ringing can also use a separate output device, such as a speaker. A headset is an audio choice, not a requirement for configuring notifications, hotkeys, or startup behavior. Check your installed version before following version-specific instructions
3CX announced Windows Softphone V5.5 production on March 30, 2026. Its build history lists V5.8 as a beta build in August 2026. The interface can change between builds, so use the installed production app’s controls and distinguish beta notes from production instructions.
