The best alternative depends on the service platform your organization already uses and how much authority you are prepared to give AI. For complex IT support, shortlist AI features in your current ITSM suite, Microsoft-centered workplace service workflows, and a cross-platform service-management layer. Then compare what each can actually complete, where it requires approval, and how it hands unresolved cases to people. The available product information does not establish a universal winner or a comparable benchmark for resolving complex tickets end to end.
What counts as an alternative to an autonomous IT agent?
“Autonomous” can describe very different capabilities. One system may summarize a ticket or suggest a reply; another may classify and route it; a more capable workflow may perform approved actions across connected systems. Those functions are not interchangeable, and none by itself proves that the system can safely resolve a complex support case.

For this comparison, the alternatives are approaches to adding AI to IT support: use capabilities in an existing service platform, build around Microsoft workplace tools, or evaluate a separate service-management layer that connects to current tools. Each is worth investigating for a different environment. Product descriptions establish what vendors say their systems offer, not how reliably they will work with your workflows, permissions, and data.
Which alternatives are worth evaluating?
| Approach | Best fit to investigate | What the available product information describes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft workplace IT services pattern | Organizations centered on Microsoft 365 and Teams | Requests created through Teams, connections to ITSM and other systems, work that can be autonomous or triggered, and approval gates for sensitive actions. | Which actions are enabled and permitted in your environment, connector coverage, implementation effort, audit records, and escalation behavior. |
| Jira Service Management AI | Teams already operating service workflows in Atlassian | AI support interactions, summaries of critical ticket details, and virtual-agent features. | What actions it can complete in your complex cases, feature eligibility, integration depth, and outcomes measured in your environment. |
| ServiceNow Autonomous Workforce | Organizations building around ServiceNow’s enterprise platform | ServiceNow announced role-based AI specialists, including a Level 1 Service Desk AI Specialist, and described Moveworks as part of its platform. | Current availability for your region and plan, system access, approval and escalation controls, and independently validated resolution results. |
| Aisera AI Service Management | Organizations considering an additional service layer across existing tools | Aisera describes integrations with ServiceNow and Teams, as well as ticket classification, routing, and resolution capabilities. | Whether it can complete your specific complex workflows, the configuration and integrations required, governance controls, and independently measured outcomes. |
Microsoft: a workplace-centered pattern
Microsoft’s documented pattern uses Teams as a request entry point and connects agents with ITSM and other systems. It also describes approvals for sensitive actions. That makes it a candidate for organizations that want support to fit into a Microsoft-centered workplace, but it does not establish which actions a particular customer has configured or how the pattern handles every failure or escalation.
Jira Service Management: AI within existing Atlassian workflows
Jira Service Management’s documented AI features include support automation, ticket summarization, and virtual-agent interactions. These may help with intake and agent workload, but the product information cited here does not show how well the features resolve complex cases from start to finish. Check the capabilities and eligibility that apply to your deployment rather than assuming that summarization or a virtual interaction equals autonomous resolution.
ServiceNow: role-based AI specialists
ServiceNow announced an Autonomous Workforce that includes a Level 1 Service Desk AI Specialist and described Moveworks as part of its platform. This is a relevant path to investigate for organizations already standardizing on ServiceNow. Because this is an announcement and availability can change, confirm current release status, regional and plan limits, and the controls available in the edition you would deploy.

Aisera: an additional service-management layer
Aisera markets connections with ServiceNow and Teams and describes capabilities for classifying, routing, and resolving tickets. That can make it relevant when an organization is considering a layer across existing tools. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof that it will complete a given complex workflow; validate the integration and configuration work against real cases.

Compare the system’s behavior in the workflows you care about, not just the breadth of a feature list. Use the same representative cases and success criteria for every option.
- Check platform fit. Identify the ITSM system, collaboration tools, identity and access controls, and other systems involved in your target tickets. Establish which integrations are available and what implementation or configuration they require.
- Separate information help from action. For each workflow, record whether the AI answers a question, summarizes a ticket, classifies or routes it, or completes an action in another system. Count a case as resolved only when the required outcome is completed—not merely when the ticket is deflected, summarized, or routed.
- Map approval boundaries. List the actions that can run automatically and those that require a human to approve them. Pay particular attention to sensitive changes and verify that approval behavior is configurable and visible to reviewers.
- Test escalation and recovery. Observe what happens when the agent lacks information, encounters a failed action, or cannot safely proceed. Check whether it transfers the case to a person with the relevant context and leaves a useful audit trail.
- Measure comparable outcomes. Track completed resolution, time to resolution, reopens or corrections, escalation quality, and user impact on the same kinds of cases. Use a defined baseline and document the case mix so results can be compared meaningfully.
Ask vendors to demonstrate these steps with scenarios drawn from your own ticket categories. A polished answer in a demo does not show whether the system can complete the necessary actions under your organization’s permissions or recover cleanly from an exception.
What do the published results actually show?
Atlassian’s 2025 company blog, “AI in action: the next chapter for Jira Service Management,” reported a “30% improvement in ticket handling efficiency” for IT help-desk agents. This is Atlassian’s company-published claim, not an independent comparative result, and handling efficiency is not the same measure as autonomous resolution of complex tickets.

The product materials considered here do not provide a common, independent benchmark across these alternatives for complex-ticket resolution. Treat vendor claims as reasons to run a controlled evaluation, not as proof that one option will outperform another in your environment.

Should AI resolve a complex ticket or route it to a person?
Make that decision by action and risk, rather than by applying one rule to every ticket. A system may be useful for gathering details, summarizing history, or routing a case even when it should not take the final action. For any workflow that can change access, configuration, or another sensitive state, define the required human approval and verify how the system stops when approval is missing.
Best Value
In a pilot, test both successful paths and cases that should not be completed automatically. Include incomplete requests, conflicting details, unavailable integrations, and failed actions where relevant. Review whether a human receives enough context to continue and whether the record shows what the AI attempted and what happened next. Keep the ticket with a human when the system cannot meet the workflow’s safety, evidence, or recovery requirements.
How to choose a shortlist
- Already standardized on Atlassian or ServiceNow: start by testing the AI capabilities documented within that service platform, then compare their actual action coverage with your target tickets.
- Centered on Microsoft 365 and Teams: evaluate the workplace IT services pattern and verify the connectors and approval controls needed for your environment.
- Need a layer across existing systems: investigate a cross-platform option such as Aisera, and include integration effort and operational governance in the evaluation.
- For every candidate: require a clear account of permitted actions, human gates, escalation behavior, auditability, and measured outcomes before making a deployment decision.
