Product research is a repeatable sequence of checks you run before spending on inventory, development, or a launch. Define a specific customer and need, test whether interest exists and holds up over time and across locations, compare the offers already serving that need, read marketplace and review evidence for gaps, and then write down an explicit decision: reject the idea, investigate further, or run a limited test. No single tool or metric guarantees a winner. Each check reduces uncertainty, and none settles the question alone.

What product research can and cannot tell you

Shopify’s 2026 guide to product research, published May 21, 2026, separates two families of criteria. Market-based criteria cover market size, competition, and target customers. Product-based criteria cover the product itself and how it differs from what already exists. Work through the market first, then the product, because a well-built product aimed at a market too small or too crowded will still struggle.

The useful output of this process is a set of signals, not a forecast. Those signals typically tell you:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How people describe the need in their own words, whether interest is rising or falling, and where it concentrates geographically.
  • How many competing offers exist, how they are priced, and what buyers repeatedly praise or complain about.
  • Where existing products disappoint, which is often the most actionable finding.

What the process cannot tell you is whether a specific version of the product will sell, at a specific margin, in a specific period. Treat every estimate in this article as a input to a decision you still have to make.

The six-step workflow

1. Define the customer and the problem

Write down who might buy, what job the product does for them, and the situation in which that need arises. Broad categories produce vague answers, so narrow the category into a testable problem. For example, “outdoor gear” is too broad to research, while “a trail-running insole for walkers with flat feet who cover rocky terrain” gives you a customer, a need, and a context you can check against every later signal. (This example is illustrative, not drawn from a test.)

Niche positioning is a repeatable pattern in Shopify’s examples. Its guide quotes Pete Maldonado, cofounder of Chomps, from a Shopify Masters episode: “Focusing on a very niche community allowed us to make waves and to be known within that small community for a very small dollar amount.” The lesson is that a small, well-defined audience can be a viable starting point, provided the economics work at that size.

2. Check whether interest exists

Use search data to see how people actually phrase the need, whether interest changes over time, and whether it differs by location. Google Trends can show interest over time, location-filtered interest, and related and rising queries. Use those queries to generate hypotheses about the underlying need and to find vocabulary your product page should match.

A spike or a rising query is a lead to investigate, not evidence of purchasing demand. Search interest measures curiosity and intent to search; it does not measure orders, margins, or repeat purchases. Do not turn a trend line into a sales forecast.

3. Map competing offers

Compare the products that already serve the same need. For each, record the positioning, price, key features, and the strengths and complaints that recur in customer feedback. Shopify identifies the competitive landscape as a core market-research dimension and recommends combining competitor pricing with website traffic and search-demand data. Each of those three signals answers a different question, so keep them in separate columns rather than averaging them.

4. Read marketplace-specific signals

If you sell on Amazon, Product Opportunity Explorer, available within Seller Central, adds marketplace data to the steps above. Amazon says the tool groups search terms into niches using the products customers view or purchase after searching. It reports demand trends, search terms and volume, competition and saturation, reviews, returns, pricing, and customer purchasing behavior. Use it to answer two questions: which needs are underserved, and which product attributes customers actually value.

Amazon’s own guidance on the tool is direct: “The tool is only a guide and should not be a substitute for your own judgment about demand for your products.” Read the data as a set of prompts for your judgment, not as a verdict.

5. Test whether the idea can be differentiated

Look for a specific unresolved need or an improvement that customers would recognize without being told. Repeated review complaints can suggest a hypothesis, but a complaint does not establish that the affected group is large enough to sustain a business, or that your proposed fix is feasible to source or manufacture.

Amazon says its review and return insights can inform product development and marketing choices. Before committing, confirm the hypothesis with a second kind of evidence: a customer conversation, a search-term pattern, or a competitor gap that the first signal did not reveal.

6. Make the next decision explicit

Summarize what you found for five dimensions: demand, competition, customer need, differentiation, and remaining uncertainty. Then choose one of three outcomes:

  • Reject if demand is thin, the need is already well served without a clear gap, or you cannot describe a differentiated version.
  • Investigate further if one or two signals are strong but the others are missing or contradictory.
  • Test a limited launch if the evidence is consistent across demand, competition, and need, and the remaining uncertainty can be bounded by a small first order.

The thresholds that separate these outcomes depend on your business, category, geography, sourcing constraints, and unit economics. None of the cited sources supplies a universal scoring threshold, so define your own cut-offs in advance and write them down before you look at the data.

Tools and what each one answers

Compare tools by the question they answer, the type of data they use, their geography and time range, and whether their values are estimates or direct platform data. A tool is useful only if its output would change a real decision.

Tool or source Question it answers Data type and limits
Google Trends Is interest rising, falling, or concentrated in certain locations, and which related or rising queries merit follow-up? Relative search interest. It is not proof of purchases or profitability.
Jungle Scout What are estimated Amazon prices, revenue, and unit sales for products in a niche? Estimates. Shopify’s guide does not establish their accuracy, current pricing, or current program terms.
Similarweb How does competitor website traffic compare across the offers you are mapping? Traffic is one signal. It does not establish product sales. Data method not stated in the cited guide.
Niche Scraper Which products and ad examples appear across Shopify stores and AliExpress? Discovery leads only. Data method and current terms not stated in the cited guide. Validate every lead with independent demand evidence.
Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer Which marketplace niches show demand trends, search terms and volume, competition, reviews, returns, pricing, and purchasing behavior? Amazon’s own marketplace data. Requires Seller Central access. Amazon describes it as guidance, not a substitute for seller judgment.

Do not place a search-interest trend next to a marketplace sales estimate as though they measure the same thing. One describes attention; the other describes transactions. Use each to answer its own question, then combine the answers in your step 6 summary.

Working through Product Opportunity Explorer

If you sell on Amazon, this sequence turns the tool’s output into a decision input. Confirm the exact navigation in your own Seller Central account, since the cited Amazon page does not specify menu paths.

  1. Sign in to Seller Central and open Product Opportunity Explorer.
  2. Start from the niche that matches your problem definition from step 1. If none matches, your definition may be too broad or too narrow.
  3. Read the search terms and volume to see how shoppers phrase the need. Reuse their wording in your hypothesis.
  4. Check competition and saturation. A large niche with a few dominant listings is a different situation from a crowded niche with many small sellers.
  5. Read reviews and returns for the features customers praise and the failures that send products back.
  6. Check pricing and purchasing behavior to see whether the price point you would need is already being bought.
  7. Write the underserved need, if you found one, into your step 5 differentiation test and your step 6 summary.

Amazon reports that sellers who launched products from niches they had viewed in the tool achieved higher early sales potential. The figure is covered in the next section, with its limits.

Figures to quote with their qualifications

  • US ecommerce sales: $1.23 trillion in 2025, up 5.4% from 2024. This is a US Census Bureau figure as reported by Shopify. Check the original Census release before using it in a market-size argument.
  • Startup failure reasons: Shopify’s 2026 guide states that 43% of failed startups cite poor product-market fit as a top reason for closing. The guide attributes the figure to an external source that it does not identify, so treat it as a secondary statistic rather than an independently verified one.
  • Amazon’s early-sales result: Amazon’s 2025 internal study reports 2.5 times higher sales potential in the first three months for products launched from niches sellers had viewed in Product Opportunity Explorer within the preceding 12 months. The study covered sellers in the US, EU, and Japan. This is Amazon’s reported internal result. It is not a guarantee for any individual seller, and it does not isolate the tool as the cause of the outcome.

When the evidence disagrees

Signals will often conflict. These are the most common patterns and what they usually suggest:

  • Interest is rising, but the marketplace shows saturated competition. The need may be real but already well served. Narrow the customer definition to find a segment the current offers miss.
  • Reviews show strong complaints, but search volume is small. The problem may be real but too small to sustain the business. Check whether the affected group is large enough at your intended price.
  • Competitors are priced high, and demand looks healthy. Check whether the price reflects a real feature or service gap you could match at lower cost, or whether it reflects a brand premium you cannot replicate.
  • A discovery tool lists a product, but search and review data show little interest. Treat the listing as a lead only. Do not start from a discovery list and work backward to justify it.

The process works best when each signal is written down separately, dated, and tied to the question it answers. That record is what lets you change your decision when the next signal arrives.
