The reliable answer is to follow the shutdown and storage instructions for your exact model, keep its charging case charged, and use the charge-level and recharge schedule the manufacturer gives for storage. For many models, the charging case is the place the earbuds are meant to rest, so the case is part of the battery routine, not an afterthought.
Why there is no universal power-off method
Earbud makers do not agree on how a pair should be switched off. Some models expect you to place the earbuds in the case and close the lid. Others have a manual power-off action that you have to find in the model’s manual. Some switch off automatically when they are stored or when their battery runs low. Because the mechanism changes from product to product, a shutdown tip that works for one brand can do nothing, or cause confusion, on another.

Readers often ask whether they can power the earbuds off separately from the case. The honest answer depends on the model. Check the manual or support page for your exact model name and generation before assuming either way. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) and the Xiaomi Buds 6 are both documented on their own support pages, and their instructions differ, so the same steps should not be applied to each.

How manufacturers describe shutdown and case storage
Bose: store the earbuds in the case and close the lid
Bose’s support page for the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) says: “When you’re not using the earbuds, store them in the charging case.” It adds: “Close the charging case to help preserve battery life and keep the charging case free of debris.” For this model, then, the normal way to stop using the earbuds is to put them in the case, and the case lid is part of the routine.

Xiaomi: a flat case means flat earbuds
Xiaomi’s Buds 6 charging FAQ explains that if the case powers off because its own battery is low, “the earbuds cannot be detected or charged.” Putting the earbuds away does not remove the need to keep the case charged. If the case is depleted, the buds may not respond to it at all.
TCL: the lid is left open for storage
TCL’s support guidance for its covered earbuds says that leaving the case lid open stops the earbuds from being charged fully and automatically. This is the reverse of Bose’s advice, which is one of the clearest reasons not to copy a lid habit from one brand to another. Check which instruction applies to your model before you decide whether to close or leave the case open.

Soundcore: charge before the battery gets low
Soundcore’s Liberty 5 Pro support article says to charge the earbuds before they fall below 20% or power off automatically, and to avoid leaving the case with a prolonged low or zero charge. Its shutdown advice is therefore about battery level and case charge rather than a lid or button action.

Keep the charging case working
For the models covered here, the case does three jobs: it stores the earbuds, charges them and helps them connect. If the case runs down, the earbuds can stop charging or stop being detected. A simple routine covers this without any special tools:

- Open the support page for your exact model name and generation, such as “QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen” rather than the original model.
- Find the section on storing or not using the earbuds, and note whether it asks you to close the lid, leave it open, or store the earbuds in the case without any further step.
- Check the case’s battery level before any long break, and charge it when the manufacturer’s storage instructions call for it.
- Recharge the case and earbuds on the schedule your model’s page gives, rather than waiting for a warning to appear.

Cleaning the nozzles and contacts
Bose’s instructions for the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) cover the two areas most likely to collect debris and corrosion. For the earbud nozzles, the page says to wipe only with “a dry, soft cotton swab or equivalent.” For the charging contacts on the earbuds, it says to wipe “with a dry, soft cotton swab or equivalent” to prevent corrosion. Use dry swabs, not damp ones, and do not reach for a cleaning spray.

Apple Support’s cleaning guidance for the Beats models it covers gives a broader list of things to avoid. It says not to use external heat, cleaning products, compressed air, sharp objects or abrasive materials, and to keep moisture out of the openings. Follow the exact page for your model, since the advice is written for specific Beats products.
Water resistance is limited and can wear off
Water and sweat resistance is a model-specific rating, not a general promise. Apple Support says the resistance on its listed Beats earbuds is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear. It also says that, for the listed models other than Powerbeats Fit, the cases are not water-resistant or sweat-resistant. The earbuds and the case can therefore have different ratings, and the case may be the weaker part.
- Dry exposed earbuds completely before use, or put them in the case to dry.
- Do not shower, swim, submerge or use a sauna with the listed products.
- Treat the rating as a limit that can decline over time, not a fixed protection level.
Case covers for physical protection
Bose describes fabric and silicone covers for its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds case. They are presented as protection from dirt and everyday bumps. Bose also notes that the case itself is not completely waterproof, so a cover should be understood as a guard against knocks and grime, not as a waterproofing measure. Match the cover to your exact model and generation before buying.
What the evidence does not show
None of the manufacturer guidance reviewed here measures how much a shutdown or storage routine extends a battery’s life. These are care recommendations from manufacturers, not controlled comparisons. No source reviewed establishes a percentage of battery saved, a number of charge cycles avoided, or a number of years gained. Treat the storage figures above as the maker’s instructions for that product, not as a cross-brand standard for optimal charge.
A simple storage routine
- Confirm the power-off method for your model: lid action, manual button, or automatic shutdown.
- If the earbuds will sit unused for weeks, check the battery and case levels against the table above.
- Store the earbuds in the case, with the lid position your model’s page recommends.
- Wipe the nozzles and contacts with a dry, soft cotton swab if they look dirty, and keep liquids and cleaning sprays away from openings.
- Set a reminder for the recharge interval your model’s support page gives, and recharge the case and earbuds on that schedule.
Following these steps will not produce a measured battery gain, but it keeps the case working, reduces corrosion and dirt, and follows the instructions the maker wrote for that exact product.
