Vocal compression reduces level differences by turning down signal that rises above a threshold. To use it well, set the controls against the actual performance, listen to how the vocal changes, and compare the result at a similar loudness—not by chasing a preset or a fixed gain-reduction target.
What vocal compression does
A compressor reduces dynamic range: sounds above its threshold are turned down, helping manage peaks or make level differences less pronounced. Compression can help a vocal sit more consistently in a mix, but it is not a substitute for a performance edit, and not every vocal needs it.

What the compressor controls mean

These controls work together: threshold determines when compression starts, ratio determines how much it acts, and attack and release shape its timing. Raising output gain changes level after compression; it does not undo the gain reduction.

How to compress a vocal, step by step
- Listen to the unprocessed performance. Decide whether you are addressing a few loud peaks, inconsistent phrase levels, or deliberately seeking a denser vocal. Compression need not be applied just because a track is a vocal.
- Choose a moderate ratio, then lower the threshold while the vocal plays. Watch the gain-reduction meter and listen for the compressor to engage on the portions you intend to control. Shure gives 2:1–6:1 as a broad starting range for a mild compressed effect and advises adjusting threshold to catch louder peaks; it is a starting point, not a universal standard. - Adjust attack for the vocal’s onset. If the compressor catches the start of words too aggressively, try a slower attack so more of the initial envelope passes through. If peaks need tighter control, try a faster attack. Judge the effect by listening, rather than assuming one timing is right for every voice. PreSonus explains fast and slow attack behavior.
- Adjust release while listening to phrases. Listen for the gain reduction to recover between words and phrases in a way that suits the performance. A recovery that is too abrupt or too slow may make level movement sound unnatural. There is no single vocal release time that fits every performance. - Compare at a fair listening level. Compression often lowers level, and makeup or output gain can restore it. Match the processed and unprocessed playback as closely as practical before deciding which sounds better; the louder version can seem preferable simply because it is louder. Audacity’s manual explains its compressor controls, makeup gain, and gain-reduction metering: Compressor.
- Check the vocal in the mix. A setting that sounds controlled in isolation can change phrasing or dynamics when the other instruments are playing. Listen in context for intelligibility, expression, and whether the vocal sits where you want it.
How much gain reduction is too much?
There is no universal ceiling: the useful amount depends on the performance and the sound you want. Use the meter to understand how hard the compressor is working, then decide by listening for unwanted changes in the vocal’s dynamics, onset, or phrasing.
Ableton’s Live 12 Reference Manual cautions that gain reduction above roughly 6 dB may produce a desired loudness but can significantly alter the sound and damage dynamic structure. Treat this as a warning to listen critically, not as a mandatory limit. See Ableton’s Live 12 compressor reference.

How to tell whether a setting is working
Compare settings on the same passage and at similar output loudness. Listen for whether the compressor controls the peaks or level differences you intended without obscuring the vocal’s onset, making recovery between phrases unnatural, or flattening expression you want to keep. Then make the same judgment in the full mix.
