Compress scheduled website screenshots after capture and before durable storage: write each capture to a staging location, encode it, verify the result, and only then expire the original if your retention policy allows. For a local workflow, Google’s cwebp supports both lossy and lossless WebP. Use lossless encoding when exact pixels matter; consider lossy only after checking representative pages for text and edge artifacts.
Choose compression based on how you use the screenshots
There is no universally suitable quality setting for website screenshots. Pages combine small text, thin borders, icons, and high-contrast UI elements; lossy compression can visibly damage those details. web.dev’s WebP guidance recommends checking the resulting quality rather than assuming one setting fits every image.

| Workflow need | Starting choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel-level visual diffs, audit records, or future reprocessing | Keep the original or use lossless encoding | Confirm the encoder and restore path preserve the exact pixels you need. |
| Smaller files for routine viewing | Test lossy WebP against representative captures | Inspect small text, thin lines, icons, and high-contrast edges, and measure actual file sizes. |
| Transparent captures | Test a format and mode that preserve transparency | Verify the background and alpha edges in your viewers and downstream jobs. |
Google documents WebP as supporting both lossy and lossless compression and transparency. It reports lossless WebP images as 26% smaller than PNG, lossy WebP as 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG at equivalent SSIM quality, and lossy WebP with transparency as saving 60–70% relative to transparent PNG on average. These are general format comparisons, not predictions for your scheduled captures; measure your own pages. Google’s WebP documentation describes the comparisons.
Build a safe capture-to-storage pipeline
- Capture to staging. Write the original screenshot to a temporary path or object rather than replacing the durable archive immediately.
- Encode a copy. Select the format and settings you intend to test. Do not treat the example quality setting below as a universal recommendation.
- Validate the encoded file. Confirm it opens, has the expected dimensions, and meets your text-legibility and visual-diff requirements.
- Record provenance. Store the page URL or stable identifier, capture timestamp, source and output formats, encoder version and settings, and any fidelity-check result with the image.
- Commit or retain. Move the validated output into durable storage. Keep or expire the original according to a policy that accounts for exact-fidelity, audit, and reprocessing needs.
Keeping the original until encoding and validation succeed gives the job a recovery path: a failed encode does not destroy the only copy. The metadata above is a workflow recommendation, not a requirement imposed by the format documentation.

Convert a screenshot with Google’s command-line tools
Install Google’s WebP tools for your operating system, then run this documented example on a staged PNG:
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
This command demonstrates lossy WebP conversion at quality 80; Google publishes it as a usage example, not a best setting for screenshots. Test several settings on real captures and compare legibility, visual differences, output bytes, and encoding time before choosing one. See Google’s cwebp command-line documentation.

For lossless WebP, use the encoder’s lossless option and validate the output against the original with the tools and checks used by your pipeline. If a PNG view is needed later, Google documents decoding with:

Measure the result on your actual schedule
Compression reduces bytes only if the encoded files are smaller for your pages and settings. Before rolling out a policy, sample captures that reflect the range of sites and page states in the schedule, including text-heavy layouts and any transparent output.
- Compare small text, icons, thin rules, and high-contrast edges at the scale people will inspect them.
- For visual diffing or audit uses, test whether lossy artifacts create unacceptable mismatches; retain lossless originals if exact pixels are required.
- Measure bytes per capture and total storage over a realistic schedule rather than extrapolating from a format statistic.
- Measure encoding time and CPU use at expected volume, and make sure failed conversions leave the staged original intact.
- Check that archive viewers, OCR jobs, diff tools, and restore workflows can decode the selected format.
- Keep the encoder version and settings so future jobs can reproduce the conversion.
The cited format documentation does not establish a preferred encoder setting, CPU cost, or archival policy for your workload. If evaluating AVIF, first confirm that your encoder and every downstream tool support it, then run the same fidelity, size, and processing checks; the available sources do not establish an independent comparison of AVIF and WebP for text-heavy screenshots.

Troubleshoot common compression failures
- The output is not smaller. Lossless results vary by image, and your source may already be efficiently encoded. Compare actual bytes and avoid replacing an image with a larger output.
- Text looks soft or edges show artifacts. Lossy compression is a likely cause. Try a higher quality setting or lossless encoding, and compare at the intended viewing scale.
- The encoded file will not open in an archive tool. Confirm that the viewer or downstream service supports WebP; use a compatible decoder or retain an output format the workflow can read.
- The pipeline loses its only original after an error. Encode from staging and delete or expire the source only after the output opens and passes validation.
- A visual-diff or OCR job changes after rollout. Check format support and lossy artifacts, then compare against the retained original. Keep lossless sources when exact reprocessing is a requirement.
