A cloud relay has no single fixed price: a managed service charges its subscription fee, while a self-managed VPS combines server rental with any billable outbound traffic. For a 30-day month, a relay sending a 6 Mbps stream to YouTube moves about 1.94 TB before overhead; at 10 Mbps, about 3.24 TB. Those are calculated estimates, not provider quotes. The key is to price the relay-to-YouTube traffic and confirm that the chosen plan permits a continuous prerecorded loop.
What you pay for—and which connection the relay changes
In a local OBS loop setup, OBS sends the stream to a cloud relay, and the relay sends it onward to YouTube. You may pay for a managed relay subscription, or rent a VPS and operate the forwarding software yourself. A VPS bill can include compute rental and outbound traffic above the provider’s included allowance.

The relay can move the YouTube-facing connection to a data center, but it does not remove the local OBS-to-relay connection. If the computer, home internet, or OBS feed fails, the relay may have no new input to forward. YouTube also warns that network disruption can break a stream.

For a continuously running stream over 30 days, estimated decimal traffic is bitrate in Mbps × 0.324 TB, before transport overhead. This calculation counts outbound relay-to-YouTube data; it does not automatically count the incoming leg as outbound traffic. Check how the provider defines and meters billable egress.

These are arithmetic estimates, not measurements or provider quotes. A 31-day month adds about 3.3% to the 30-day estimate. Leave margin for protocol overhead and other traffic. If a relay forwards the encoded stream unchanged, output volume is driven approximately by its incoming bitrate; if it creates multiple or differently encoded outputs, estimate each output separately.
Choose a bitrate that fits both the video and the budget
YouTube’s official H.264 guidance recommends 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. Its recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the rate suited to the actual loop rather than selecting a higher number by default. The bitrate sent by the relay determines its approximate YouTube-facing traffic volume.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Test the chosen settings with realistic motion and audio, then monitor stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

What the provider examples do—and do not—tell you
Managed relay: check eligibility, not just the subscription price
Restream’s official pricing page showed a free plan and monthly paid plans of $19 Standard, $49 Professional, and $239 Business in the result accessed in 2026. Prices can vary by region, billing cycle, or promotion; confirm the current terms at Restream pricing. Its help page says active-channel limits depend on subscription and that higher plans unlock features including prerecorded streaming. That does not establish that a particular plan allows an unattended 24/7 loop, its maximum duration, or other usage limits. Confirm those points with the current terms or support before paying: Restream’s channel and plan guidance.

VPS: traffic allowance is not the server rental price
Hetzner documents 20 TB of included traffic for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Server products. US and Singapore allowances vary by product and may be materially lower; this is a regional and product-specific allowance, not a general VPS figure. A 10 Mbps stream’s estimated 3.24 TB over 30 days fits within 20 TB by volume alone, before overhead and other traffic. Check the selected region and current terms at Hetzner’s included traffic documentation.
The cited allowance documentation was last changed in 2024, so verify it before relying on it. Hetzner says a cloud server continues to be billed while it exists, even when powered off, and outgoing traffic beyond included amounts can be charged. Server prices depend on type and location, as well as project currency and VAT treatment; the documentation does not establish a stable all-in monthly price for a particular current server SKU. Check the current price and billing details at Hetzner’s billing FAQ and billing overview. Deleting a server may stop its server charge, but can affect restoration and availability.

Set up and budget for the whole path
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. Enable live streaming and check that the channel meets YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube says live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance.
- Choose where OBS sends the feed. Use the relay’s ingest destination in OBS, then configure the relay’s YouTube output; or, if the service design calls for it, configure OBS to send directly to YouTube. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions.
- Protect the YouTube stream key. YouTube describes the key as a password-like credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private and reset it if exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Leave upload headroom on the local link. The OBS computer must upload to the relay continuously. YouTube recommends 20% room in its network guidance. A cloud relay does not make the local uplink unnecessary.
- Test the complete route. Test realistic motion and audio, watch YouTube stream health, and verify both the local-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube paths. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Verify duration and archiving separately. YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement is not a guarantee that a longer event will remain live indefinitely or be archived as one video. Do not assume a single event can run forever; verify current platform limits and plan how to handle event duration.

Questions to settle before paying
- Does the selected managed plan or VPS provider explicitly permit continuous prerecorded looping?
- What is the exact region, billing period, included egress, and excess-traffic rate?
- Is the service forwarding the same encoded stream, or creating additional or transcoded outputs?
- What happens operationally if OBS, the local connection, the relay, or YouTube drops?
