The command is available in desktop PowerPoint, not PowerPoint for the web. Since compression can reduce image detail, save a copy of the original deck and check the result at the size you expect people to view it.

Open the presentation and select a picture. To compress more than one picture, select the pictures you want to include.

Open the Picture Format tab and choose Compress Pictures. In some versions, the command appears as an icon in the Adjust group.

In the compression dialog, choose the scope. Select Apply only to this picture to limit compression to the selected picture. Clear that checkbox to apply compression to other pictures in the presentation; this can override earlier per-picture compression settings.

Select the target resolution and confirm. The change takes effect when the dialog closes. Microsoft says you can undo it if the result is not acceptable.
For current Microsoft 365 guidance, 220 ppi is the default picture resolution. Microsoft’s guidance for reducing PowerPoint file size suggests a default resolution of 150 ppi or lower as one possible measure. These are settings, not a universal quality target: choose according to whether the deck will be shown on screen, projected, or printed, and inspect the result at its expected viewing size. Can you compress images in PowerPoint for the web?
No. The cited Compress Pictures workflow is for desktop Office apps, including PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac; Microsoft says the feature is not available in Microsoft 365 for the web. Balance presentation size against image quality
Compression can reduce a picture’s file size and, depending on the selected option and intended use, its dimensions. It can also remove detail. There is no single resolution that suits every deck: a picture that looks acceptable at a small on-screen size may not hold up when enlarged or printed. Review compressed pictures in the context in which the presentation will be used.

Keep an uncompressed copy of the presentation if you may need to recover or re-edit the original images. PowerPoint can retain cropped-off image regions and editing data so those changes can be reversed; compression and deleting retained data have different consequences.

Remove cropped image areas or editing data
PowerPoint can keep image regions outside the visible crop and other editing data to support later changes. Removing that retained data can reduce file size, but it also limits your ability to restore the original crop or undo edits using the discarded information. Keep a backup before removing it. Check embedded audio and video
If pictures are not the main source of a large file, embedded media may be responsible. In PowerPoint for Windows, use File > Info > Compress Media and choose a quality option. Microsoft says this command is not available in PowerPoint for Mac or the web. Compression can remove embedded subtitles and alternate audio tracks, so check that these elements are not needed before proceeding. Microsoft Support: Compress your media files.
Review fonts and default image settings
Microsoft also lists limiting embedded-font characters and lowering the default image resolution as ways to reduce presentation size. Conversely, turning off picture compression favors image quality but can produce much larger files. The cited setting is File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality.
