To compress images for the web, first resize each image to dimensions that fit its actual display role, then compare formats and compression levels on the real asset. Use responsive image candidates so phones and smaller layouts do not download an unnecessarily large file. Finally, inspect the rendered image and measure page performance: smaller image files reduce transfer bytes, but they do not guarantee a faster page if another bottleneck dominates.
What image compression can—and cannot—improve
Image optimization can reduce the number of bytes a browser downloads. Resizing also avoids transferring pixels that a particular display does not need. Both changes can help when images account for a meaningful share of the page’s loading work.

Compression alone does not fix a slow server, render-blocking resources, or other causes of delay. It may improve Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) when the LCP element is an image, but the result depends on how that image is prioritized and delivered, as well as on the rest of the page. Measure before and after instead of inferring a speed gain from file size alone. web.dev’s LCP guidance explains how to identify and prioritize the likely LCP resource.

A practical workflow for optimizing images
1. Find the images with the most potential impact
Inspect the page’s network requests and identify large image downloads, especially images visible near the top of the page and the image that may be the LCP element. Compare each file’s intrinsic pixel dimensions and byte size with its rendered size and role. A large file may be appropriate for a full-width photograph; a tiny icon is not the same optimization target.

2. Resize for real layouts and devices
Generate image candidates at widths that correspond to your layouts and the pixel density you need to support. Do not serve one oversized original to every device, but do not shrink an image so far that it looks blurry on high-density screens. A manageable set of candidates is easier to maintain than a separate file for every possible width. Check the page to confirm that the browser selects the expected candidate.
web.dev’s responsive-image guidance describes serving images suited to different displays. Cloudflare also documents responsive image transformations in its image optimization documentation.
3. Choose an encoding and compression level
Lossy compression discards some image information to reduce file size. It is often worth testing on photographs, where a moderate change may not be noticeable at the displayed size. Lossless compression preserves image data and is preferable when exact pixels matter, though it may not reduce the file as much.

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and is widely supported in modern browsers in web.dev’s format guidance. AVIF may produce smaller files for some images, but support is less broad in that guidance; consider a fallback if your audience or delivery setup requires one. Google for Developers says WebP “offers superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web,” a general format statement—not a guarantee that it will produce the smallest file for every image. See Google’s WebP documentation.

4. Compare the image at the size readers will see
There is no universal quality setting that works for every image. Compare the original and compressed versions at their intended display size. Look closely at lettering, logos, line art, sharp boundaries, and colored text on flat backgrounds: lossy compression and chroma subsampling can make artifacts especially visible there. Keep the smallest output that still meets the visual requirement.
5. Serve the right candidate and format
Use responsive image selection when layouts need different dimensions. If you offer alternative formats through a <picture> element or content negotiation, provide an appropriate fallback for the browsers you need to support. When a server chooses the representation based on the browser’s Accept header, web.dev advises adding Vary so shared caches distinguish those responses.
If an image is likely to be the LCP element, make sure it is discoverable and consider an appropriately high fetch priority. Do not apply high priority indiscriminately; verify the request’s priority and the page’s results in developer tools and performance measurements. Reserve lazy loading for images that are off screen when the page first loads, rather than delaying a likely LCP image. Cloudflare lists lazy loading among its image-delivery capabilities in its optimization documentation.

6. Measure the page again
After changing the image files or delivery markup, measure the page again under comparable conditions. Check the transferred image bytes, which candidate the browser downloaded, the page waterfall, and LCP where relevant. Use both lab measurements and field data when available: a file-size reduction is useful evidence of fewer image bytes, not proof of a fixed page-speed improvement.

How to choose between compression approaches
| Decision | What to weigh | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Lossy or lossless | File-size reduction versus pixel fidelity | Test lossy settings on photographs. Prefer lossless when exact pixels matter, and inspect edges and text. |
| WebP, AVIF, or a legacy format | Output bytes and quality, browser support, and fallback complexity | Test actual assets. WebP has broad modern-browser support in the cited guidance; AVIF is described there as less widely supported. |
| Manual tools or hosted optimization | Control and setup effort versus automation and delivery scale | web.dev lists Squoosh and ImageOptim as compression options. Cloudflare documents automatic compression, responsive transformations, modern-format delivery, and lazy loading. |
| One file or responsive variants | Simplicity versus device-appropriate downloads | Create a manageable number of width candidates based on actual layouts, then verify which files browsers request. |
| Image work or broader performance work | Image transfer bytes versus other loading bottlenecks | Use the page waterfall and LCP measurements to determine whether image optimization addresses the current problem. |
The tools above are options named in official documentation, not a claim that one setting or service will produce the best result for every site. Google’s WebP documentation also points to the cwebp conversion utility for Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a screenshot of a page before and after image changes, you can use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for free.

Common image optimization problems
The image is smaller but looks visibly worse
Raise the quality setting or use lossless compression if exact detail matters. Check the image at its actual display size, especially lettering, logos, and sharp edges. If the source is already small or highly compressed, re-encoding may not help.
The page still feels slow after compression
Confirm that the browser is downloading the optimized file and the intended responsive candidate. Then inspect the page waterfall and identify whether the image is actually on the critical path. A server delay, other resources, or image loading priority may matter more than the file’s encoding.

A phone downloads the large desktop image
Review the responsive markup, candidate widths, and rendered layout. Check the selected image request in browser developer tools, then adjust the candidates to match real display sizes without making high-density displays blurry.
A modern format does not display for some visitors
Check your browser-support requirements and delivery configuration. Use a fallback through <picture> or an appropriate negotiated response when needed. If the server varies its response by the request’s Accept header, configure Vary so caches do not serve one representation as though it were another.
The compressed output has artifacts around text or edges
Try a higher quality setting, lossless encoding, or a different format. Inspect colored text on flat backgrounds as well as logos and line art; these can reveal artifacts that are less obvious in photographs.
Changing the image did not improve LCP
Check whether the image is actually the page’s LCP element and whether it is discovered and prioritized appropriately. If another element or delay determines LCP, image compression alone may not change that metric.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does compressing an image always make a web page faster?
No. It reduces image transfer bytes, but page speed depends on whether those bytes are on the critical path and on other loading bottlenecks.
Should I use WebP or AVIF?
Compare both on your own images and check browser-support needs. The cited web.dev guidance describes WebP as more widely supported than AVIF.
