For YouTube, use the YouTube Data API’s thumbnail metadata and select an image URL it actually returns. Vimeo’s API can return existing thumbnails or create one from a chosen time in the video. There is no verified universal URL pattern for every video site.
First choose: retrieve a thumbnail or create a new one?
A hosted video may already have one or more platform-managed thumbnail images. Retrieving one means asking the video platform for its available thumbnail links and choosing an image it supplies. Creating a new thumbnail means choosing a frame from the video or uploading an image, where the platform supports those options.

- Use the existing thumbnail when the platform’s selected image works for your page or application.
- Create or upload a thumbnail when you own the video and need a different image. Availability and authorization depend on the platform.
- For other video sites, follow that service’s official tools or API documentation. The steps below are specifically supported for YouTube and Vimeo.
Get a thumbnail from YouTube
For a developer: use the Data API metadata
Use the YouTube Data API to retrieve the video’s thumbnail resource, then read its url and, when supplied, width and height. Select from the actual values in the response rather than assuming every video has the same set of sizes or a fixed image URL pattern. Google notes that available thumbnail sizes can vary with the source image’s resolution or content; a larger image may be available for an HD video than for a non-HD video. The API response’s image URL is the useful result: display it or download it according to your application’s needs. Check the returned dimensions before relying on an image for a particular display size. Do not infer that a size is available simply because another video returned it.

For a video you own: set a custom thumbnail
YouTube provides a separate thumbnails.set API method for setting a video’s custom thumbnail. Google’s method documentation lists JPEG and PNG among accepted media types and a maximum file size of 50 MB. Review the current API instructions and confirm account eligibility and authorization requirements before building this into a workflow; the file limits do not establish that every account can use the method. Get or create a thumbnail from Vimeo
Retrieve existing thumbnail images
Vimeo’s API lets an authorized application retrieve a video’s thumbnail connection and list its associated images. Choose from the links and sizes returned for that video; do not assume there is one universal dimension or image link. Create a thumbnail from a video frame
Vimeo documents a way to create a thumbnail by specifying a time in seconds, which selects a frame from the hosted video. The API workflow requires an API application and an access token with the necessary scope. Check Vimeo’s current API version and authorization requirements for your application before implementing it; its documentation examples are labeled version 3.4.

Upload your own image or request dimensions
A video owner can also upload a custom image. Vimeo documents JPEG and PNG as common formats for custom thumbnails. Its API supports requesting thumbnail dimensions with a sizes parameter formatted as width by height in pixels. Consult the current Vimeo API documentation for the exact request and required access scope.
Account for expiring Vimeo image links
Vimeo says thumbnail links returned by its API are valid for one hour. For longer-lived use, download the image or refresh its URL; Vimeo’s guidance discourages relying on hard-coded or persistently cached thumbnail links. What about a video file on your computer?
A local video file is different from a hosted-video thumbnail: you need to select a frame and save it as an image. The platform guidance here does not establish a verified command or batch procedure for extracting frames from local files, so do not treat Vimeo’s time-based API feature as a general-purpose local video command. For exact extraction steps, use the documentation for the software you choose and confirm its timestamp and image-output syntax.

The YouTube image is missing or smaller than expected
Inspect the thumbnail resource returned for that specific video and use its available URL and dimensions. Google documents that thumbnail sizes vary with the source image’s resolution or content, so do not hard-code an assumed resolution.
You cannot set a YouTube custom thumbnail
Confirm that you are using the separate thumbnails.set method, that the image meets the documented file-size and media-type limits, and that your account and API authorization meet YouTube’s current requirements.
A Vimeo thumbnail URL stops working
Refresh the link through Vimeo’s API or download the image for longer-lived use. Vimeo says returned thumbnail links are valid for one hour, so a stored URL should not be treated as permanent.

The API rejects a Vimeo thumbnail request
Check that the request is authenticated with an access token carrying the necessary scope and that the API application and request parameters match Vimeo’s current documentation. For time-based creation, provide the intended time in seconds; for dimension requests, use the documented width-by-height format.
You need a thumbnail from another platform
Look for that service’s own thumbnail feature or API documentation. Do not assume YouTube’s metadata workflow or Vimeo’s authenticated API applies to a different host.
