To get an image under 100 KB without sending it to a remote service, use a browser-based compressor that says it processes files on your device. Select the image, set a 100 KB target if available, choose an output format, then check the downloaded file’s actual size and appearance. If it is still too large, adjust quality or pixel dimensions and try again. Not every image can meet the limit at its original dimensions without visible quality loss.
Compress an image to 100 KB in your browser
- Choose a tool with a clear local-processing claim. For example, ClientSide says its edits run in the browser and files do not reach a server. That is the provider’s statement, not an independently audited guarantee. Read ClientSide’s privacy and feature information.
- Select your image using the tool’s file picker. A browser-based tool can encode image content locally using the Canvas API; a particular website’s privacy behavior depends on how it is implemented.
- Set the target to 100 KB if the tool offers a target-size control or preset. Img100KB, for example, claims browser-side compression and lists 100 KB among its target sizes. See Img100KB’s product page.
- Choose an output format that suits the image and the site or form where you will use it. For photographs, a lossy format such as JPEG or WebP may be appropriate. For screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art, prefer lossless encoding when the size allows it.
- Encode, inspect, and adjust. Check the output file’s actual size and preview it at the size it will be used. If it exceeds the limit, lower lossy quality or reduce pixel dimensions, then encode and check again.
- Download and verify the saved file. Confirm that the downloaded file—not only a preview or estimate—meets the limit and has the expected format.
Why 100 KB is a target, not a guaranteed result
A browser’s Canvas API can turn image content into a Blob, a file-like object, and can accept an output type and a quality value for lossy formats. MDN documents a quality number from 0 to 1 for formats such as JPEG and WebP. This is an encoding control, not a universal command to produce an exact file size. The result depends on the image, format, quality, and dimensions. MDN: HTMLCanvasElement.toBlob()

When the image will not fit at its current dimensions without unacceptable artifacts, reducing its pixel width and height may help. Do this only if fewer pixels are suitable for the intended display or upload. After any adjustment, inspect both the size and the image: meeting the number alone does not ensure that text, edges, or details remain usable.

Choose a format for the image and destination

What “no upload” does—and does not—establish
Browser-side image processing is technically possible, but the Canvas API does not verify how any particular compressor handles files or other page data. ClientSide and Img100KB make first-party claims that processing happens in the browser. Those claims should not be treated as independent proof of a site’s network behavior.

For a sensitive image, read the tool’s privacy documentation and use a service only if you trust its handling. If you need stronger assurance than a product’s own statement, use a workflow you control rather than assuming that a “no upload” label has been independently verified.

If the output is still over 100 KB
- Lower lossy quality incrementally and compare the preview after each encode.
- Reduce pixel dimensions if the image does not need its original resolution.
- Try a suitable alternative format, then verify the actual output type and destination compatibility.
- If none of these changes preserves acceptable appearance, the image may not be suitable for a 100 KB limit at the required dimensions. Check whether the receiving site accepts another format or a larger file.
