To create a complex AI image, plan the scene before prompting: identify the main subject, describe where each element belongs, and give every reference image a specific job. Generate a base image, then refine it with focused edits rather than trying to control everything in one overloaded prompt.
How should you plan a complex AI image?
Begin with the image’s purpose and the scene’s essentials. OpenAI Academy’s image-prompt guidance says one to three clear sentences are usually enough. Prioritize what the image needs to communicate, not a long list of decorative adjectives.

A useful order is:
- State the image’s purpose or format.
- Name the main subject and what it is doing.
- Describe the setting and the positions or interactions of other elements.
- Add style, framing, lighting, materials, or constraints that materially affect the result.
For example: “Create a wide editorial illustration of a botanist examining a glowing plant in a greenhouse. Place the botanist on the right, the plant in the left foreground, and glass shelves of seedlings behind them. Use a restrained teal-and-gold palette and keep the plant unobstructed.” The subject positions and overlap constraints carry more compositional information than adding more mood words.

Use concrete spatial language: foreground and background, left and right, near and far, above and below, or in front of. Specify which elements should overlap and which must remain visible. Adobe’s Firefly composition guide describes composition as the arrangement of subjects in the frame and notes that outlines and depth matter when matching structure.

How do you use multiple reference images?
Do not assume the image model will infer what each uploaded reference is meant to contribute. Label the references in your prompt and assign distinct roles: one for layout, another for palette, and another for visual style, for example. OpenAI Academy demonstrates assigning one image to preserve a desk layout and a second to provide style.
Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation distinguishes image prompts from its edit-model and style-reference workflows. It describes image prompts as inspiration for new creations rather than a way to reproduce a reference exactly. When combining references, explain in text which details matter and what should not carry over.

Keep the set of references limited to the jobs the image actually needs. A reference that supplies style does not automatically establish the desired subject placement; state that separately or provide a layout reference.

Yes, when the image tool supports a composition or structure reference. A rough block-in is useful when placement, silhouettes, scale, or depth relationships matter more than precise drawing. It can show, for instance, where a person stands relative to a doorway without requiring finished colors or details.

Adobe Firefly composition reference
Adobe’s guide, last updated June 16, 2026, instructs users to enter a text prompt, select a model, open the Composition control, upload or select a reference, and adjust the strength slider. The reference supplies visual structure; the text prompt describes the content and appearance you want. A stronger setting gives the reference more influence, while a weaker setting allows more deviation.
Midjourney composition and layers
Midjourney’s Edit Model documentation describes using up to four reference images to create a new composition with multiple elements. In the Editor, images can be added as layers, moved, scaled, reordered, or partly erased before submitting an edit. These controls can help combine a rough layout with separate visual inputs, but the result still depends on the model’s interpretation.

How do you refine a result without starting over?
Treat the first generation as a draft. Decide what is wrong, then make one meaningful change at a time. OpenAI Academy recommends small, targeted revisions and repeating details that must not drift. A revision might ask for a brighter subject, less saturated colors, or a simpler background while preserving the existing layout.

When the overall image works but one region does not, use a selection, mask, or erase control if available. Describe only what should replace the selected area, including how it should fit the surrounding lighting, perspective, and style. Midjourney’s Editor documentation describes erasing an intended area and prompting for the replacement; its layers can also be arranged and selectively erased.

Expand the canvas
If the composition needs more room, use an outpainting or canvas-expansion workflow where supported. Midjourney’s Editor allows the canvas to be expanded before prompting for what should appear in the added space. Describe how the new area continues the scene rather than treating it as an unrelated image.
Change the whole image’s surface or style
For a broad style change rather than a local repair, Midjourney’s Editor supports retexturing without selecting a region. Its Edit Model also supports targeted inpainting and outpainting with multiple reference images. Submitting an edit flattens the result, so arrange and adjust layers before submission if their separate positions still matter.
Which controls matter when choosing an image tool?
Choose based on the kind of control the composition requires, not on an assumption that different models will interpret the same prompt identically. Reference behavior and editing options can vary by tool and model version.
