Use a repository package whenever it provides a suitable version. Compile from source on a VPS only when you need an upstream version, patch, feature, or architecture that the distribution does not provide. The safe pattern is to build as a normal user, install required development dependencies, configure an explicit prefix, compile and test, then install with narrowly scoped privileges. For repeatable deployments, stage the files into a native package instead of copying unmanaged files directly into the live filesystem.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Choose source compilation for a specific reason
A source build gives you control over the exact code and build options, but it also transfers responsibility for dependencies, updates, security fixes, rollback, and removal to you. On a Debian or Ubuntu VPS, APT should be the first choice when its package version and feature set meet your requirements. Repository packages carry dependency metadata, fit the distribution’s filesystem conventions, and can receive normal upgrades and security updates.

Source compilation is justified when the repository lacks a required upstream release, feature, patch, architecture, or build option. Debian’s maintainer guidance describes compiling fixed upstream source for local needs and installing it under /usr/local, which keeps locally managed software separate from files owned by the distribution.
| Approach | Best fit | Dependency handling | Updates and security | Removal and rollback | Automation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repository package | The distribution version is suitable | APT resolves declared dependencies | Distribution updates and security channels | Package manager tracks files | Strong and repeatable |
| Direct upstream source install | A specific upstream version, patch, feature, or architecture is required | You identify and maintain development and runtime libraries | You monitor upstream releases and rebuild for fixes | Depends on a project uninstall target or your own manifest | Requires careful scripting and records |
| Locally built native package | You need source-level control but want package-manager ownership | Build metadata can declare dependencies | You rebuild and publish updates, while installation remains managed | Package removal and versioned upgrades are available | Best middle path for repeated deployment |
Do not assume that every project uses GNU Make. The source may use CMake, Meson, a language-specific build tool, or a project-specific bootstrap process. Identify the build system before running commands.

Prepare the VPS without building as root
Use a dedicated non-root account
Download, unpack, configure, compile, and test as an ordinary account. A compiler executes build scripts and processes files from the source tree; running that work as root unnecessarily increases the impact of a compromised archive or build step. Use sudo for installing distribution prerequisites and for the final write into a protected prefix when needed.
Build in a working directory with enough space for the archive, extracted source, object files, test outputs, and any staged installation. Keep the source tree outside a directory served by a web server or used for application uploads.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Record the build inputs
Before compiling, record the operating-system release, CPU architecture, source version or commit, compiler and linker versions, configure flags, dependency versions, and the install prefix. These details are the minimum needed to reproduce an upgrade or investigate a later security issue.
Install the baseline toolchain
On Ubuntu, build-essential supplies the basic compiler toolchain and related utilities. It is only a baseline: projects commonly need additional development packages for headers, link libraries, generators, interpreters, or documentation.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essential
Install project-specific development packages according to the project’s build instructions and the distribution’s package names. A runtime library package is often not enough; compiling usually requires its development package, which supplies headers and linker metadata. If a build declares dependencies, install all of those relationships before retrying rather than repeatedly guessing from later errors.
Do not remove the compiler and headers immediately after installation if you expect to rebuild for security updates. If the VPS is a production host, consider building in a clean environment and transferring a native package to the host instead.
Obtain and inspect the source
Prefer a verifiable release
Use a signed release archive or a verified upstream repository. Confirm the version, checksum or signature according to the project’s instructions, and avoid compiling an unreviewed archive copied from an unknown location. A source build has the same trust implications as any other software installation, plus the additional code executed by its build scripts.
Read the project instructions first
From the extracted source directory, read README, INSTALL, release notes, and project-specific build documents. Look for required tools, supported operating systems, compiler constraints, generated files, environment variables, test commands, service instructions, and known platform limitations.

Makefilemay support direct Make targets but still require a project-specific preparation step. - Language-specific files such as a Rust, Go, Python, or Java build manifest may mean Make is only a wrapper, not the actual build tool.
These instructions are a template for a conventional Make-based project, not a guarantee that every project accepts the same commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfigure the build when a configure script is present
See the available options
Run the help command before selecting options. It reveals supported prefixes, optional features, compiler settings, and whether the project expects an out-of-tree build.
./configure --help
A generated configure script checks the host, compiler, libraries, headers, and platform capabilities, then creates Makefiles with the settings it discovered. A common starting point is:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
/usr/local is the conventional location for software managed by the local administrator rather than by the distribution. Choose a different explicit prefix only when the project or your deployment layout requires it. Avoid silently accepting a project default if you do not know where it will copy binaries, libraries, headers, documentation, and configuration files.
Read the first failure, not just the final summary
If configuration fails, the final line often describes only the consequence. Read the first diagnostic and inspect config.log for the failed compiler or linker test.
less config.log
A message about a missing header usually identifies a development package to install. A message about an unavailable library may require the corresponding development package, a corrected library search path, or a compatible architecture. A project that cannot find a dependency may also be looking in a nonstandard prefix; use the project’s documented include and library options rather than adding arbitrary global paths.
After installing a missing dependency or correcting an option, rerun configuration. If the project requires a clean reconfiguration, follow its instructions; some projects provide a distclean target, while others require a fresh build directory.

Compile with Make
What Make does
Make reads the project’s Makefile, evaluates target dependencies, and runs the commands needed to bring requested targets up to date. It can avoid rebuilding targets whose prerequisites have not changed. The default target is project-defined, so read the documentation or inspect the available targets before assuming that plain make is correct.
make
On a VPS with sufficient memory and a project that supports parallel compilation, you can request multiple jobs:
make -j"$(nproc)"
Parallelism is not automatically safe for every project or every VPS. It can expose undeclared build dependencies and can exhaust memory or disk space. Start with fewer jobs, such as make -j2, when the host is small or the project documentation recommends conservative settings. If a parallel build fails with an ordering-related error, retrying serially with plain make can distinguish a resource problem from a project build issue.
Use the documented target
Some projects need a generated-code step, a bootstrap target, a particular compiler, or a named target instead of the default. Do not add flags copied from an unrelated project. Preserve the exact command and environment that produced a successful build in your build record.
Run tests before files reach the live system
Testing before installation can catch missing runtime libraries, architecture assumptions, incorrect feature detection, and configuration mistakes while the build is still isolated. The conventional targets are often make check or make test, but the project may use another command.
make check
# or, if documented by the project
make test
Capture failures, including the test name, command, environment, and relevant log. A test failure may be caused by a missing runtime dependency, a service or user that exists only on a fully configured system, a disabled optional feature, or an unsupported architecture. Do not install a failing build into production merely because compilation completed.

The Makefile’s install target decides which files are copied and where they go. A typical direct installation is:
sudo make install
Use sudo only for this protected write. The command may install executables, shared libraries, headers, manual pages, configuration examples, or other resources. It may not register a package with APT, create a service account, enable a daemon, or install every operational file your application needs.

After installation, inspect the project output and verify that it stayed within the intended prefix. If the software installs shared libraries under /usr/local/lib, the dynamic linker may need the distribution’s documented library-cache or search-path configuration. Do not alter global linker settings blindly; make the smallest change required by the project and record it.
Stage the install before committing it
A safer workflow installs into a temporary staging directory by supplying the project’s supported destination variable, commonly DESTDIR:
rm -rf "$HOME/stage/project-version"
mkdir -p "$HOME/stage/project-version"
make DESTDIR="$HOME/stage/project-version" install
DESTDIR usually adds a staging root in front of the configured prefix. The resulting tree might contain $HOME/stage/project-version/usr/local/bin and related directories. Confirm that the files are correct, complete, and free of unexpected paths before turning the tree into a native package or copying it to a target host. Follow the project’s instructions if it uses a different staging variable.
Prefer a native package for repeatable deployments
Build a distribution-native package from the staged tree when the software will be installed on more than one VPS, upgraded regularly, or operated as a critical service. A native package preserves file ownership, supports explicit versions, allows package-manager removal, and gives you a place to declare runtime dependencies. The exact packaging tool and metadata format depend on the distribution and project instructions, so use the platform’s packaging guide rather than inventing a package layout.
Packaging does not eliminate maintenance: you still need to monitor upstream releases, rebuild for security fixes, test upgrades, and publish the resulting package. It does make those responsibilities visible and automatable instead of leaving a collection of untracked files in the filesystem.

Verify binaries, libraries, and services
Confirm the installed path and version
command -v project-command
project-command --version
/usr/local/bin/project-command --version
Use the absolute path while checking so that an older repository binary earlier in PATH does not give a misleading result. Confirm that the reported version matches the source you built and that a representative command works with the intended user and configuration.
Check linked libraries
For a native executable, inspect its dynamic-library requirements with the tools provided by the operating system:
ldd /usr/local/bin/project-command
Look for unresolved entries and verify that the loaded library locations match the intended prefix. A successful compilation does not prove that the production host has every runtime library, correct architecture, or compatible loader configuration.

Handle daemons separately
Compilation and make install do not by themselves create a production service definition. If the package provides a daemon, review its documented service unit, dedicated user, directories, permissions, environment, logging, restart behavior, network exposure, and hardening settings. Create and test the service definition separately, then start it only after checking its configuration and listening interfaces.

Troubleshoot the common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
command not found: gcc, make, or a related tool |
The baseline toolchain is absent | Install the distribution’s compiler/build bundle and GNU Make, then rerun the documented build step. |
| Header file not found | The development package supplying that header is missing | Identify the distribution package that provides the header, install it, rerun configuration, and rebuild. |
| Configure cannot find a dependency | A library, header, generator, or search path is unavailable | Read the exact failed test and config.log; check package architecture and documented prefix options. |
| Undefined references or other linker errors | Missing development library, incompatible compiler/linker, wrong library order, or search-path issue | Install the matching development package and follow the project’s linker and prefix guidance; do not hide the error with arbitrary flags. |
| Build is killed, hangs, or reports no space | Insufficient memory, disk, or parallel job count | Reduce parallel jobs, free disk space, and use swap only in accordance with the VPS provider’s guidance. Allow room for objects, tests, and staged files. |
| Permission denied during compilation | The source or build directory is owned by another user, or the build was started as root | Move or chown the working tree for the normal account and compile without sudo; reserve privilege for installation. |
| Installed files are difficult to remove | A direct install was not recorded by a package manager | Use a staged native package for future builds, or reconstruct a complete manifest from the staged tree before changing anything. |
When errors cascade, the first compiler or configure diagnostic is usually the useful one. Later messages often describe objects that could not be built because an earlier prerequisite failed. Fix one underlying error, rerun the relevant step, and preserve the logs if the problem returns.
Plan upgrades, security fixes, and removal
Keep a complete build record
- Source archive name, version, commit, and verification result.
- Operating-system release, architecture, compiler, linker, and build-tool versions.
- Every configure, CMake, Meson, compiler, and environment option.
- Development and runtime dependency package versions.
- Configured prefix, staging path, installed file list, and any linker-cache changes.
- Test commands, results, service definitions, configuration locations, and backup locations.
This record lets you reproduce the installation and identify exactly what must be rebuilt when upstream publishes a security fix.
Upgrade deliberately
A source-installed program does not receive APT’s normal update notifications or security patches. Monitor the upstream project’s release and security notices, rebuild the corrected version in a clean environment, run the tests, compare the staged file list, and upgrade through your package or deployment process. Keep the previous package or staged tree until the replacement has passed its checks and a rollback path is confirmed.
Remove or roll back
Some projects provide an uninstall target, but its presence and reliability are project-specific. Check the Makefile and documentation before using it; do not assume that make uninstall exists or that it will remove files added by later versions.

make help
make -n uninstall
The dry-run form shows commands without executing them when the project supports that target. For a direct install without an uninstall target, use the original staged manifest to remove only the files belonging to that version, then review empty directories, linker-cache entries, configuration, service units, users, and data separately. Never delete a broad prefix recursively when it may contain unrelated locally managed software.
For future installations, a versioned native package is the cleanest rollback mechanism: install the new package, validate it, and retain the previous package so the package manager can restore it if necessary.
A repeatable end-to-end procedure
- Make the decision. Confirm that the repository version cannot satisfy the required feature, patch, version, or architecture. If it can, use the repository package.
- Prepare the account and workspace. Use a non-root account, a private build directory, and enough free memory and disk for all build artifacts.
- Install prerequisites. Run
sudo apt update, installbuild-essential, and add every project-specific development dependency. - Verify the source. Use the project’s signed archive or verified repository, confirm the version, and read
README,INSTALL, and release notes. - Identify the build system. Confirm that the project actually uses Make and note any bootstrap or generated-file step.
- Configure explicitly. Run
./configure --helpwhen available, then configure an intentional prefix such as/usr/local. Investigate the first diagnostic andconfig.logon failure. - Compile as the normal user. Use the documented target. Add parallel jobs only when the project supports them and the VPS has adequate resources.
- Test. Run the documented test target, capture failures, and do not install a build that has not passed the checks you require.
- Stage or package. Prefer a temporary destination and a native package when the software will be deployed repeatedly or needs dependable rollback.
- Install narrowly. Use
sudoonly for the final write into the chosen prefix or package installation. - Verify operation. Check the absolute binary path, version, representative command, linked libraries, configuration, and any separately managed service.
- Document ownership. Save the source, options, dependency versions, file manifest, test results, and upgrade or removal procedure.
What the familiar command chain really means
./configure && make && sudo make install
The shell’s && operator runs the next command only if the previous command exits successfully. The first command, when present, probes the host and generates build files. The second invokes Make’s default target and compiles the software. The final command runs the Makefile’s installation target with elevated privileges so it can write to a protected prefix.
This compact chain omits important safety decisions: whether the source is trustworthy, which dependencies are required, where files will be installed, whether the tests pass, how the install will be reversed, and who will provide future security updates. Treat it as shorthand for a documented workflow, not as a universal installation recipe.
When a source build should stay out of production
Do not deploy a direct source install when you cannot identify its files, reproduce its options, satisfy its runtime dependencies, or commit to monitoring upstream security fixes. A clean build environment and a locally built native package are usually safer for automation and multiple hosts. They preserve the feature or version advantage of upstream source while retaining a package-level ownership and rollback model.
On a single development or test VPS, a carefully recorded /usr/local install can be reasonable. On a production fleet, make the build artifact—not an undocumented interactive shell session—the unit you promote between environments.
