What BrowserCat does in a screenshot comparison workflow
BrowserCat presents a browser connection endpoint for Playwright, Puppeteer, and other CDP clients. Its product page says its router selects a managed backend based on capability, latency, and availability and advertises automatic failover. The current page identifies Cloudflare as live, with additional backends coming; these are BrowserCat’s statements, not independent verification. See the BrowserCat product page.
For the documented quick-start workflow, Playwright remains the automation interface. You write a script that navigates to a page and captures a PNG, then connect that script to BrowserCat’s cloud endpoint instead of launching a local browser. You still need to store a baseline, take a later capture under matching conditions, and compare the two files using a separate diff utility or review process. BrowserCat’s guide discusses scheduled screenshots for monitoring, but the capture and comparison steps are distinct. See the BrowserCat quick start and its browser automation guide.
How do I compare website screenshots?
- Choose the page state to test. Set the route, authentication state, test account and data, and any relevant interaction. For pages that render content with JavaScript or require login, a browser capture can show what a visitor actually sees.
- Capture a baseline. Use Playwright to navigate to the page and save a screenshot. Keep the browser, viewport, device scale factor, waits, and capture timing recorded alongside the image.
- Capture again after a deployment or on a schedule. Run the same navigation and capture steps with the same page conditions. The workflow should change the site version being checked, not incidental capture settings.
- Compare the image files separately. Use a visual-diff tool or a human review process to identify changed regions. BrowserCat’s cited material does not specify a diff algorithm, threshold, masking feature, or built-in image-comparison API.
- Review the difference in context. Decide whether a change is an intended design or content update, harmless dynamic noise, or a defect before treating it as a regression.
The quick start demonstrates the basic Playwright screenshot pattern and connecting to BrowserCat. This example saves a new PNG; the storage and diff step are separate:

await browser.close();Install the Playwright packages as described in BrowserCat’s quick start and set BROWSERCAT_API_KEY in your environment rather than committing the key to source control. Use the same viewport and context settings when making the baseline capture. For a page that never reaches network idle because of long-lived requests, choose a stable application-specific wait, such as waiting for a known selector, rather than allowing the capture condition to vary between runs.
How can I make visual changes easier to trust?
Differences are meaningful only when capture conditions are comparable. Keep these inputs stable between the baseline and current run:

- Browser engine and version, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and relevant browser settings.
- URL, route, authentication, test data, locale, timezone, and other page state that affects rendering.
- Wait condition and capture timing, including whether the page has finished loading the content under test.
- Animation and other time-dependent behavior, where the application allows it to be controlled.
Timestamps, advertisements, rotating content, personalization, and asynchronous loading can create differences that are not regressions. A visual diff should be reviewed against the page and the intended change. BrowserCat’s cited documentation does not establish built-in masking or noise filtering, so do not assume these are handled automatically.
Pixel, perceptual, and DOM-assisted comparisons
Pixel comparisons look for image-level changes; perceptual approaches may treat some small rendering differences differently; DOM-assisted methods can use page structure as additional context. The BrowserCat documentation cited here does not select or define any of these comparison methods. Choose a separate comparison tool based on how it handles rendering variation, dynamic regions, and review of flagged changes.

Coverage, review, and execution
Decide which browser and viewport combinations matter to your users, and include them consistently in the capture plan. A team also needs a baseline approval process: an intentional design update should not silently replace the reference image before someone reviews it. Whether captures run locally, in cloud sessions, or in CI depends on your environment and concurrency needs; the reviewed BrowserCat material establishes its browser-runtime role, not a particular visual-diff vendor, CI integration, or cost advantage.
When is a screenshot the right check?
Use browser screenshots when the rendered appearance itself matters, especially for JavaScript-rendered pages or content visible only after login. BrowserCat’s guide gives examples such as homepage layout monitoring, documentation changes, and deployment checks. For a simple text or price value that is accessible through an API or ordinary HTTP request, a direct value check may be simpler than capturing and comparing a full page.

Browser choices and configuration to check
As described in BrowserCat’s browser configuration documentation, Chromium and Chrome are listed as running browser options, while Firefox and WebKit are described as roadmap options. The same documentation says sessions currently run near the request and explicit region routing is on the roadmap. These are time-sensitive vendor statements; check the current documentation before designing a cross-browser or region-specific test plan.
BrowserCat documents configuration through a BrowserCat-Opts header or a smaller set of query parameters. The listed options include browser choice, launch arguments, user preferences, and proxy configuration. Its documentation says header settings take precedence if both header and query parameters are supplied, and warns users to use secure https or wss transport when credentials are placed in request parameters. Keep credentials out of source code and logs where possible.

Does BrowserCat compare screenshots automatically?
The reviewed BrowserCat pages document browser sessions, Playwright screenshot capture, and monitoring workflows. They do not verify an automatic screenshot-diff feature or a complete visual-regression system. Treat BrowserCat as the capture runtime in this workflow and arrange comparison and any alerting separately.
Troubleshooting screenshot comparisons
- The connection fails: Check that the BrowserCat API key is available to the process and that the connection uses the documented
wss://api.browsercat.com/connectendpoint. Confirm that your client follows the current BrowserCat quick-start instructions. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Confirm the target URL and authentication state, then wait for the page content you need rather than capturing immediately after navigation. Pages with client-side rendering may require a selector-specific wait.
- Every run shows changes: Compare viewport, device scale factor, browser configuration, locale, test data, and timing. Investigate timestamps, ads, rotating content, and asynchronous elements as likely sources of noise.
- A diff flags an intended update: Review the changed area and approve a new baseline only after confirming the change is expected. Keep a record of which baseline corresponds to which release or test state.
- You only need to monitor a value: If the text or price is available through an API or ordinary HTTP response, check that value directly instead of maintaining image baselines.
