To compare website screenshots in GitLab CI, capture the same page from a baseline revision and the revision under test, run an image comparator that exits nonzero when differences exceed your chosen tolerance, and save the screenshots and diff as job artifacts. GitLab provides the pipeline, artifact storage, and merge-request test reporting; your project must choose and run the capture and comparison tools.
How do I compare website screenshots in a GitLab CI pipeline?
- Build and serve the revision under test. Define jobs in
.gitlab-ci.yml, organize them into stages, and useneedswhere a job must depend on another job or run without waiting for every earlier-stage job. Make sure the application server is ready before capture begins. GitLab’s pipeline documentation describes stages and job dependencies. - Capture the baseline and candidate consistently. Use the same browser build, viewport, device scale factor, route, locale, fonts, and stable application data. Wait for the state you intend to test. Consider disabling animations and masking changing content such as timestamps. These choices reduce screenshot noise; GitLab does not prescribe a browser setup or comparison tolerance.
- Run an explicit image comparison. Choose a comparator or write a script, define its changed-pixel policy and threshold, and configure the command to exit nonzero when the permitted difference is exceeded. A small anti-aliasing tolerance may reduce noise, while an overly permissive threshold can conceal defects. Tune it against your own pages and review the diffs.
- Keep review evidence. Upload the baseline, candidate, diff, and summary as artifacts. Artifact paths are relative to the repository. GitLab uploads artifacts only on success by default, so use
artifacts:when: alwaysto retain images when the check fails.expire_insets an expiry period, but artifacts from the latest and most recent successful pipelines on a ref are retained by default regardless of that setting. See GitLab job artifacts.
Illustrative GitLab job
visual-regression:
stage: test
script:
- npm ci
- npm run build
- npm run start:test &
- npm run screenshots:capture
- npm run screenshots:compare
artifacts:
when: always
expire_in: 1 week
paths:
- screenshots/
- visual-diff/
The npm scripts are project-defined placeholders, not built-in GitLab commands or a tested configuration. The application must be ready before capture. A real pipeline may separate build, serve, capture, and compare into jobs and pass files between jobs with artifacts or use caches for reusable dependencies.

How can I catch visual regressions in a GitLab merge request?
Run the visual check against a clearly defined baseline and make its comparison command determine the job result. For example, a project may capture the target branch as its baseline and the source branch as the candidate, but it must arrange those revisions and images itself. A report or uploaded image alone does not fail a pipeline: the script must return a nonzero exit status when its threshold is exceeded.
GitLab can display JUnit XML unit test results in merge requests and pipeline details, compare test results between source and target branches, and link screenshots attached to test cases. A test case can include a [[ATTACHMENT|...]] screenshot path in its system-out; the job also needs to upload the referenced screenshot as an artifact. This improves failure review, but it does not compare pixels or set job status. GitLab states: “Unit test reports must use JUnit XML format with specific requirements for GitLab to properly parse the results.” See Unit test reports.

Choose and tune a comparison approach
The GitLab documentation does not select a comparator or establish a best tool. Evaluate your candidate against the way your site renders and the review workflow your team needs.
- Setup and maintenance: Consider how the comparator fits your browser automation, framework, and existing CI scripts.
- Difference model: Determine whether it compares pixels or uses perceptual similarity, and whether it supports anti-aliasing tolerance and region masks.
- Review output: Check whether failures provide a useful diff and whether the evidence can be surfaced for merge-request reviewers.
- Runtime and resources: Account for browser startup, page loading, image processing, and the number of routes you capture.
- Execution location: Decide whether the check should run entirely in your own CI or depend on a hosted service.
Start with a strict enough threshold to expose meaningful changes, then investigate noisy regions and stabilize their causes before broadening tolerance. Baselines should be deliberate and reviewable: updating one simply to silence a failure can normalize an unintended regression.

Retain artifacts safely
Artifacts let maintainers browse or download the files produced by a job. Set artifacts:access when access should be restricted, and inspect screenshots for credentials, private data, or personal information before storing them. GitLab warns against putting tokens, passwords, or other sensitive information in artifacts because users with pipeline access may be able to view them. See job artifacts and debugging CI/CD pipelines.

What GitLab’s built-in browser performance feature does
GitLab’s browser performance testing uses sitespeed.io to compare key performance metrics for pages between source and target branches. It is a performance feature, not pixel-level screenshot comparison. A visual regression check still needs a capture process and comparator that your project configures. See Browser performance testing.

For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. This does not replace a baseline strategy or image comparator in GitLab; use it as the capture step, then compare the resulting images with your chosen project tool. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say which page verdict applied and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The pipeline passes despite a visible difference: Check that the compare script actually returns a nonzero status above the configured threshold and that the job is not masking its exit code.
- No screenshot or diff is available after a failed check: Confirm artifact paths are repository-relative and include the output directories; set
artifacts:when: alwaysrather than relying on the success-only default. - Images differ on every run: Align browser version, viewport, scale factor, locale, fonts, route, and test data. Wait for the intended page state, disable animations where appropriate, or mask changing regions.
- The capture job starts before the application is available: Add a readiness check before capture, or express job ordering with stages and
needs; merely starting a server process in the background does not guarantee it is ready. - Merge-request test details do not show an attached screenshot: Verify the JUnit XML format, the attachment path in
system-out, and that the referenced file is uploaded as an artifact. - Artifacts expose information that should be private: Remove sensitive material from captured pages where possible, restrict access with
artifacts:access, and do not store secrets in artifacts.
