Selenium provides the screenshot capture; it does not provide a built-in visual-regression comparator or baseline approval workflow. The example below shows a local Python workflow you can run and adapt.
What Selenium screenshots do in a visual regression test
A screenshot records what the browser rendered at a particular point in a test. A visual regression workflow captures the same page state on later runs and compares the new image with an accepted baseline. Differences are signals to review, not automatic proof of a defect: they can indicate an unintended UI change, rendering variation, or expected product change.
Selenium’s Python WebDriver can save the current browser window as a PNG with driver.save_screenshot(path). It can also capture a specific element with element.screenshot(path). The capture API does not decide whether two images are acceptably similar; your project must provide comparison, reporting, and baseline review. See the Selenium screenshot examples and Python WebDriver API.

Install the dependencies
This example uses Selenium to capture the page and Pillow to compare images pixel by pixel. Install both in the Python environment used by your test runner:

python -m pip install selenium pillow
You also need a browser available to Selenium. The example uses Chrome. Keep the browser and its runtime environment consistent between baseline creation and later runs; driver management depends on your Selenium and browser setup.
Create a screenshot and compare it with a baseline
Save the following as visual_test.py. The first run creates a baseline if none exists. Later runs compare a fresh screenshot with that baseline and save a difference image when pixels differ. The comparison is intentionally strict and is a useful starting point, not a perceptual image-testing system.
from pathlib import Path
from PIL import Image, ImageChops
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
URL = "https://example.com"
BASELINE = Path("visual-baselines/example-home.png")
ACTUAL = Path("artifacts/example-home-actual.png")
DIFF = Path("artifacts/example-home-diff.png")
BASELINE.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
ACTUAL.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
DIFF.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
# Uncomment for a CI environment without a visible desktop:
# options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,1000")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get(URL)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
lambda d: d.execute_script("return document.readyState") == "complete"
)
if not driver.save_screenshot(str(ACTUAL)):
raise OSError(f"Could not save screenshot to {ACTUAL.resolve()}")
if not BASELINE.exists():
Image.open(ACTUAL).save(BASELINE)
print(f"Created initial baseline: {BASELINE}")
else:
baseline = Image.open(BASELINE).convert("RGBA")
actual = Image.open(ACTUAL).convert("RGBA")
if baseline.size != actual.size:
raise AssertionError(
f"Screenshot dimensions differ: baseline={baseline.size}, "
f"actual={actual.size}. Check viewport and capture setup."
)
diff = ImageChops.difference(baseline, actual)
if diff.getbbox() is None:
print("No pixel differences found.")
else:
diff.save(DIFF)
raise AssertionError(
f"Visual difference found. Inspect {ACTUAL} against {BASELINE}; "
f"difference image: {DIFF}"
)
finally:
driver.quit()
Run it with python visual_test.py. On the initial run, inspect the captured image and commit it as an intentional baseline. On later runs, treat a failure as a review request: compare the actual screenshot and diff with the baseline, determine whether the change is expected, and update the baseline only after approval. Keep screenshots and diffs as CI artifacts so reviewers can see what changed.
Use a component screenshot when that is the real assertion
A whole-window image is appropriate when layout around the page matters. For a focused component test, locate the element after the page is ready and save only that region:

element = driver.find_element("css selector", "[data-testid='price-card']")
if not element.screenshot("artifacts/price-card.png"):
raise OSError("Could not save element screenshot")
Element capture reduces unrelated page content in the comparison, but it does not remove volatility inside the component itself. Selenium’s documentation includes both current-window and element screenshot examples at Selenium documentation.
Make screenshots stable enough to compare
Visual tests are only informative when baseline and current captures represent comparable states. Keep these inputs controlled:
- Browser and environment: use consistent browser versions, operating system or container image, installed fonts, and driver configuration. Rendering differences between environments can create noise.
- Viewport and scale: hold window dimensions and display scale constant. A different viewport can change responsive layout and screenshot dimensions.
- Application state: seed predictable data, use a known account or fixture, and control locale, timezone, and feature flags where they affect rendering.
- Capture timing: wait for the meaningful state, not merely navigation. Waiting for
document.readyStatedoes not guarantee that asynchronous data, fonts, or images have finished rendering. - Motion and changing regions: disable or freeze animations when practical. Mask or ignore only regions known to vary, such as a live clock; excessive masking can conceal real regressions.
Percy’s documented Python Selenium integration includes controls such as animation handling, ignored regions, full-page capture, and element scopes. Those controls illustrate common sources of instability, but exact setup and available options should be checked in its current Python Selenium repository.
Choose local comparison or managed snapshots
Local capture and comparison
A local pipeline keeps screenshots, comparison rules, and review decisions within your project’s workflow. You choose the comparison method and tolerance, store baselines in version control or another reviewable store, and publish current images and diffs as build artifacts. Selenium supplies the capture, but your project must maintain the comparator and baseline process.

Managed snapshot integration
Percy documents a Python Selenium integration using percy_snapshot(driver, name); its repository says snapshot names should be unique. It is an option to investigate when you want managed snapshot review rather than building the entire review flow locally. Confirm current setup, supported options, and terms in the Percy repository.
Applitools’ surfaced integration material is for Playwright, not proof of a current Selenium/Python drop-in integration. If considering a managed service, verify support for your exact stack rather than inferring compatibility from another browser automation framework. The available Playwright material is at Applitools’ Playwright integration page.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a URL rather than exercise an application through Selenium, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents, and every plan includes the features. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshoot common failures
The screenshot file is missing or empty
save_screenshot returns a boolean: it returns false on an I/O error and true when successful. Use a writable, explicit path with a .png extension, check the return value, and confirm the artifact exists. The API behavior is documented in the Python WebDriver API.
The comparison fails because dimensions differ
Check window size, browser display scale, and whether one capture includes a different amount of page content. A full-window screenshot and an element screenshot are not comparable baselines; keep the capture method identical.
The test is flaky despite no meaningful UI change
Wait for the element or application state that matters, stabilize test data, and look for animation, rotating content, dynamic timestamps, delayed fonts, or image loading. Avoid solving noise by broadly ignoring large parts of the page.
CI cannot open Chrome
Confirm Chrome is installed in the runner and that the chosen headless configuration matches the runner environment. If the browser starts locally but not in CI, compare the runner image and browser configuration before changing the expected baseline.

A difference image appears on every run
First verify the same URL, data, viewport, browser, and state are used. The sample comparator flags any pixel difference, so even small rendering changes count as failures. If that is too sensitive for the application, adopt a reviewed tolerance or a visual testing tool with comparison controls rather than silently accepting every new screenshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium include visual regression comparison in Python?
No. Selenium captures screenshots; comparison, reporting, and baseline approval must come from your project or a separate visual testing integration.
Can Selenium capture a single component instead of the whole browser window?
Yes. Call element.screenshot(path) on the WebElement you want to capture.
