Start with your room: measure the distance from your usual seat to the screen, then check that the TV’s full width and height will fit. Use viewing-distance charts as starting points—not rules—and compare OLED or LCD construction alongside each model’s actual specifications. No single size formula or panel type is right for every room and viewer.
How to choose a TV size from your room
A TV’s advertised size is the diagonal measurement of its screen, not its width. That number helps compare screen sizes, but it does not tell you whether the set will fit your wall, stand or cabinet. LG explains the diagonal measurement in its TV lineup guide; Samsung’s size guide also provides reference dimensions and viewing distances.

- Measure from your usual seated position to the plane where the screen will sit. Use the distance for normal viewing, not a spot you rarely occupy.
- Check the candidate TV’s stated width and height against the available wall or furniture space. Allow for the stand or mounting arrangement you plan to use.
- Use one or more manufacturer distance guides to narrow the screen-size options, then consider your room layout and personal comfort before deciding.
Manufacturers do not use one universal method. Samsung Canada’s current guide gives a 65-inch TV reference of 2.0 m for general viewing and 1.7 m for recommended 4K viewing; for a 75-inch TV, it gives 2.3 m and 1.9 m, respectively. These are Samsung recommendations, not a promise that either distance will feel right to every viewer.

LG USA offers a different rule of thumb: divide viewing distance in inches by 1.2 to estimate a screen diagonal for a 40-degree viewing angle. It is an optional estimate, not a standard that overrides other guidance or your preference. The method is described in LG’s TV size guide.
What OLED, LCD and LED mean
OLED and LCD describe different ways of producing an image. LG’s TV lineup guide describes OLED as using self-lighting pixels. LCD TVs use liquid crystals illuminated by a backlight. “LED TV” commonly refers to an LCD TV with LED backlighting; it is not another name for OLED.

These labels explain basic construction, but they do not establish that every OLED set outperforms every LCD set. A panel category alone cannot tell you how two specific TVs compare. Check the models’ specifications and, if you need to judge image performance, look for credible measurements of those models rather than assuming a category-wide winner.
What to compare between candidate TVs

For a practical comparison, write down your seat distance and the maximum space available, then shortlist TVs that fit both. Compare the same specifications across those models, including resolution and features, and treat “OLED” or “LED” as a description—not a substitute for model-by-model evaluation. Manufacturer lineups change; LG’s current Canada guide, for example, lists sizes from 42 to 97 inches, with availability and combinations varying by model and region.

Why viewing-distance charts are starting points
A distance chart helps translate room measurements into a manageable screen-size shortlist. It cannot account for every room arrangement, program or individual preference. Nor does choosing a 4K TV make every screen size comfortable at every distance: Sony explicitly notes that content and viewing conditions matter. Try to assess the likely screen coverage from your normal seat where possible, and let fit and comfort guide the final choice rather than treating a chart as a guarantee.
