Start with what your household wants to watch, then compare the exact Canadian plan that carries it. A service is a good fit only if its catalogue, total cost, ads, picture quality, downloads and household features work for the people who will use it. There is no single best streaming subscription for every Canadian household.
1. Start with the shows, films and live programming you actually want
Write down a short list of must-watch titles, sports or other live programming, and any language-specific content your household cares about. Check which services offer those items in Canada before comparing prices. A service’s name or general reputation does not establish that a particular title is available in your region or will remain there.

Then distinguish essentials from nice-to-haves. If only one service has a must-watch show, it may be worth considering for the period you expect to watch it. If several candidates offer similar value to your household, the practical differences in price, ads, streams and device support can decide the choice.

For each candidate, note the plan available to you and check its provider page before subscribing. Plan names alone do not tell you what you will get: Crave describes features that vary by plan, while Disney+ says video and audio quality depend on your internet service, device capabilities and subscription type. The selected tier can affect picture quality, downloads, advertising and how many people can watch at once.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Ads: Check whether the tier includes advertising and whether that experience is acceptable to your household.
- Simultaneous streams: Confirm how many people can watch at the same time on the selected plan.
- Picture and audio quality: Verify the plan’s supported quality and whether your television, phone, tablet or other player can use it.
- Downloads: Check whether offline viewing is included. Disney+ states that its Standard With Ads plan does not include content downloads.
- Devices and internet: Confirm app support for the screens you use and whether your connection can support the quality you expect.
- Language and live viewing: Check the actual language options and sports or live programming you need; do not assume they are the same across services or plans.
For Disney+’s device and quality caveats, see Disney+ Canada. Crave’s Canadian page lists plan features and supported devices, including Amazon Fire TV Stick: Crave. A separate streaming player is optional; the listing does not mean you need to buy one if your television already supports the app.
3. Work out the real cost over the period you will subscribe
Compare the monthly amount with the cost over a full year, including any annual offer, introductory period, renewal amount and taxes shown at checkout. A low first-month or promotional price is not the same as the recurring price. Record when an offer ends and what the plan will cost afterward so a temporary discount does not distort the comparison.

Crave’s Canadian page presents a Disney+ bundle and says renewal is charged at the then-applicable price. Compare that bundle’s current price with the same services purchased separately on the date you are deciding; only call it a saving if the arithmetic shows it is cheaper for the same services and period. Also account for overlap if someone in the household already has one of the services, and check whether billing through a provider or bundle changes how you manage or cancel the subscription. See Crave’s plan and bundle information.

4. Use a comparison sheet to make the decision
For a shortlist of two or three services, fill in the same fields using each provider’s current Canadian plan page. If a detail is not listed clearly, confirm it with the provider rather than guessing.

| What to record | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Content match | Which named shows, films, sports or language options matter to your household? |
| Plan and cost | What is the exact Canadian tier, monthly charge, annual charge if offered, introductory period, renewal price and checkout tax? |
| Viewing conditions | Does the tier include ads, and what are its simultaneous-stream, video-quality and download limits? |
| Household and devices | Will the plan and app work on the screens you own, for the number of viewers, with your internet connection? |
| Billing and bundles | Is it billed directly or through another provider, and does a bundle duplicate something you already pay for? |
| Decision date | When did you check the plan and catalogue? Prices, offers and available titles can change. |
Choose the option that covers the household’s highest-priority viewing needs at an acceptable total cost, with features everyone can use. If no one service fits, compare a bundle or a deliberate combination of services against buying those same subscriptions separately.

The CRTC/Ipsos 2025 report found that 78% of surveyed Canadian adults had or could access at least one video streaming service. Its question asked, “Do you currently subscribe (or have access to) any of the following video streaming services?” Reported access was Netflix 56%, Amazon Prime Video 45%, Disney+ 29%, Crave 16%, YouTube Premium 13%, Apple TV+ 11%, Paramount+ Canada 10%, Roku 9% and CBC Gem 8%. The nationally stratified survey included 2,367 Canadian adults and was fielded February 27 to March 23, 2025. Because respondents could report access as well as a subscription, these percentages are not paid-subscriber counts, current market shares, or measures of catalogue quality. See the CRTC/Ipsos 2025 report.

The same report says 55% of respondents with multiple services reported having two or more on the same bill. That is self-reported bundling, not proof that the services were part of a discounted bundle.

When to revisit your choice
Recheck the catalogue, plan terms and total cost when an introductory offer expires, a bundle renews, or the title that motivated your subscription is no longer a priority. Streaming subscriptions are easier to compare when you treat them as choices for a particular household and viewing period—not permanent rankings of brands.
