To tell whether a Steam discount is genuinely good, compare the current price with that game’s own recorded price history—not just the discount percentage. Check the same edition, package, or bundle; then decide whether to buy or set an alert. Steam’s Wishlist provides basic sale notifications, while SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal add price-history tools and more flexible tracking. The latter services are independent third parties, not Steam features.
What makes a Steam discount worth considering?
A sale percentage tells you how much the displayed price has fallen from its reference price. It does not tell you whether the sale price is unusually low for that game. A large percentage can still leave a game above a price it has reached before; a smaller reduction may be close to a recorded low. Price history supplies that missing context.

Start with four details on the Steam store page: the price and currency shown to you, the discount percentage, the exact edition or package, and the sale end date if one is displayed. Then compare that price with the history for the same product. A comparison is meaningful only when the items match: a base game, deluxe edition, bundle, or package can have different prices and histories.

Its live sales page also labels some offers as new historical lows or prices matching the lowest it has recorded. IsThereAnyDeal provides price history as part of a broader deal-tracking service. Their historical records help you judge the offer; they do not establish what a game will cost in a future sale.

How to check a game’s price history
- Identify the exact item. Open the Steam store page and note whether you are considering the base game, a particular edition, or a bundle. Do not compare a bundle’s price with a base-game record as though they were the same product.
- Record the offer details. Note the current price, currency, discount percentage, and sale end date if shown. These give you a reference point for the listing you are considering, rather than a remembered or advertised percentage.
- Open a history chart. Search for the game on SteamDB or IsThereAnyDeal and open its price-history view. SteamDB says it records price changes within minutes; its coverage and history are service data, not a guarantee that every past or future price will be represented identically across services.
- Compare the current price with the recorded low. Ask whether today’s price matches or beats the lowest recorded price for the same item and region. If it does not, look at how far above the low it is and whether past sales have brought the price down further.
- Look at the shape of the history. Check when the low occurred and how often the price changed or returned to similar levels. A recent low may be more useful context than a much older one, but neither makes a future discount certain.
- Check packages and bundles where relevant. A bundle can explain why a game’s apparent lowest price differs from the lowest price shown in its data. SteamDB’s FAQ notes this caveat; compare like with like before drawing a conclusion.
- Choose whether to buy or wait. If the offer suits your budget and the history supports the price, you can buy during the sale. If you would rather pay less or are unsure, add the game to an alerting service and wait for a notification.
SteamDB says its price-history coverage includes all 41 Steam currencies and has data going back to 2012. Those are SteamDB’s descriptions of its own service. A long chart can make past patterns easier to see, but it cannot tell you that a particular low will return.
How to interpret the chart instead of chasing a percentage
Compare the price, not just the advertised reduction
The useful question is not simply “How large is the discount?” but “How does this price compare with the prices this same item has actually reached?” For example, imagine a game normally listed at $60, now offered at $30, with a recorded low of $24. The displayed reduction is substantial, but the current offer is still above that recorded low. That example is illustrative, not a current Steam listing or a prediction that $24 will return.
Use the discount percentage as a quick description of the offer, then use the chart to assess its historical context. A listed “new low” is meaningful only for the product and currency being shown, and only as a record of prices captured by that service. It is not a promise about future sales or proof that the price is the lowest available everywhere.

Give the timing of a low some context
A chart can show whether a low is recent or distant and whether similar prices have appeared more than once. That helps distinguish an isolated historical point from a price the game has returned to on multiple occasions. It still does not reveal the publisher’s future plans. SteamDB says publishers choose their discounts and that it does not know in advance which games will be discounted or at what prices.

Past sale patterns can inform a wait-or-buy decision, but they are clues, not a schedule. Do not assume a game will be cheaper in the next seasonal sale or that a previous low will repeat. If you need the game now and the current price works for you, a higher price than the historical low may still be an acceptable purchase; if you are content to wait, set an alert instead of treating a prediction as certain.
Check the right edition and bundle
Compare the edition you intend to buy with that edition’s own history. Extra content, included games, or a bundle discount can change the price and make a headline comparison misleading. SteamDB’s price pages cover games, bundles, and packages, but the record for one should not be substituted for another. If a bundle includes items you do not want, its total price alone does not establish that it is better value for you.
Which discount-tracking approach should you use?
| Approach | Useful for | What it offers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Wishlist | Basic alerts within Steam | Steam Support says users can receive a notification when a wishlisted game goes on sale. | The cited Steam Support guidance describes sale notifications, not historical charts or custom price thresholds. |
| SteamDB | Steam price history and tracking | Price tables and graphs, recorded lows, sale filtering, a watchlist, and manual Steam wishlist import. SteamDB says its history covers 41 Steam currencies and reaches back to 2012. | It is a third-party service, and it cannot know future discounts or prices in advance. |
| IsThereAnyDeal | Deal alerts and price history | Price history, a waitlist, customizable notification rules, and Steam wishlist import. | It is a third-party service. Check the retailer, offer, and terms for any specific listing directly. |
Choose based on the job you need done. Steam’s Wishlist is the straightforward option if a notification that a wishlisted game is on sale is enough. SteamDB is useful when you want Steam-focused history, recorded lows, filtering, or a watchlist. IsThereAnyDeal combines history with a waitlist and configurable notification rules. Both SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal support Steam wishlist import, according to their service information; SteamDB describes its import as manual.
These services do not make the same guarantees. Steam’s native alert is a sale notification, not a promise to notify you at a custom price. The documented SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal features provide added tracking controls, but users should check each service’s current settings and coverage before relying on a particular alert. Features and listings can change.

How to set up a Steam discount alert
Use Steam’s Wishlist for a simple sale notification
- Open the game’s Steam store page and add the game to your Wishlist.
- Check that the game appears in your Wishlist.
- When it goes on sale, look for the notification from Steam and review the current store page before purchasing.
Steam Support documents sale notifications for wishlisted games. It does not describe this as a custom threshold alert, so do not assume that adding a title means Steam will notify you only when it reaches a particular price.
Use SteamDB’s watchlist or wishlist import
- Find the game’s SteamDB page and review its price history to confirm you have the right title and product.
- Use SteamDB’s watchlist to track titles you select, or manually import your Steam Wishlist as SteamDB describes.
- Review the service’s available tracking controls and sale filters, then monitor its notifications or listings as applicable.
SteamDB says price changes are recorded within minutes. This is a statement about its service’s recording speed, not a guarantee that every user will receive an alert within minutes or that a notification will arrive before an offer ends.
Use IsThereAnyDeal’s waitlist and notification rules
- Find the game on IsThereAnyDeal and check that the page corresponds to the edition or package you want.
- Add it to the waitlist, or import your Steam Wishlist using the option the service provides.
- Set notification rules to suit how you want to track deals, then check the resulting offer before buying.
IsThereAnyDeal documents customizable notification rules, but the precise controls and retailer coverage may change. Review the current settings on the service rather than assuming a particular threshold or store is available for every game.

- Final price: Review the amount charged at checkout, including applicable taxes or fees shown there, rather than relying only on a price displayed in a comparison listing.
- Region and activation: Check any region restrictions and the conditions for activating the purchase on your account.
- Current availability: Reopen the retailer’s offer and verify that it is still available at the displayed price.
The price-history and alert features described by SteamDB and IsThereAnyDeal do not establish that every offer shown is appropriate for every reader. Treat the retailer’s own current listing and checkout details as decisive for the transaction.

Use the storefront region and currency that apply to your account. A low price displayed for another currency is not a practical comparison unless the offer is available to you under the applicable regional and activation conditions. Regional comparisons are descriptive; they are not instructions to change your account region.
SteamDB reported on March 31, 2026, that Valve published updated recommended pricing-conversion data in March 2026 for 37 currencies and four region groups. In SteamDB’s account, the methods described were multi-variable conversion, purchasing-power parity, and exchange-rate conversion. The article says developers can combine methods or set prices themselves rather than follow a recommendation, and that how often Valve would update exchange-rate data was unclear. These are SteamDB’s descriptions of Valve’s recommendations, not evidence that every developer uses them or that one country will always have the lowest price.

For a fair decision, compare the price available in your own storefront context with that item’s history in the relevant currency.

Steam purchases and sale timing: important limits
Steam Support says it cannot apply a sale discount retroactively to purchases made before or after the sale period. If you want a sale price, you need to make the purchase while that offer is active; a later price drop does not mean Steam will change the amount you already paid.
Likewise, a historical low is evidence of a past price, not a future commitment. SteamDB says publishers decide discounts and that it cannot know ahead of time which games will go on sale or what their prices will be. A chart can help you decide how patient to be, but it cannot guarantee that waiting will save money.
A practical buy-now-or-wait decision
- Buy now if the exact edition is on offer, the price is acceptable to you, and the purchase timing matters more than the possibility of a lower future price.
- Wait and track it if you do not need the game yet and would rather see whether a lower price returns. Use Steam’s Wishlist for a basic sale notification or a third-party tracker when you want its additional history or alert controls.
- Pause before buying if the chart is for a different edition, the currency or region does not match, or an external offer’s seller and activation conditions are unclear.
There is no universal percentage that makes a discount good. The useful comparison is the current, applicable price for the product you actually want against its own recorded history, combined with your budget and how long you are willing to wait.
