Until Valve announces a device and independent reviewers test retail hardware, treat chip names, release windows, specifications, and frame-rate predictions as rumors—not facts. When reliable specifications and test units do arrive, compare the successor with a clearly identified Steam Deck model using matched games, settings, and power conditions.
What is confirmed about Steam Deck 2?
Valve has not published confirmed Steam Deck 2 specifications in the sources available for this article. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications and Steam Deck hardware pages describe current Steam Deck hardware, not a successor. Valve identifies the current system’s CPU architecture as Zen 2 and its graphics architecture as RDNA 2; use the technical specifications page to identify the exact model and configuration being compared.

In 2025, Ars Technica reported Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais saying the available handheld system-on-chip offerings did not yet meet Valve’s bar for a truly next-generation performance Steam Deck. That interview statement describes Valve’s thinking; it is not a specification, launch commitment, or benchmark. Valve’s 2022 booklet, “The Future: more Steam Decks, more SteamOS,” discussed future hardware and software improvements and iterations, but did not name a successor, give a release date, or provide specifications.
How to treat the Gainsborough rumor
PC Gamer reported a theory, attributed to a YouTube hardware leaker, that an AMD APU called “Gainsborough” could power a future Steam Deck. That is unconfirmed reporting, not a Valve or AMD announcement. Do not present the chip name, architecture, compute-unit count, or predicted performance as settled information.

What is not established
The available sources do not establish Steam Deck 2 retail hardware, game benchmarks, battery tests, fan-noise or temperature measurements, or results from a complete handheld device. A predicted frame rate—or a benchmark for a rumored chip on its own—cannot stand in for testing a finished Steam Deck.
Set a fair Steam Deck baseline
Start with a current, retail Steam Deck and record its exact model, hardware configuration, firmware, operating-system version, driver, and Proton version. Valve’s technical specifications distinguish published device details; do not treat LCD and OLED revisions as interchangeable.

If the OLED is your baseline, keep its published figures in context: Valve lists a 40 Wh battery and estimates 2–8 hours of gameplay depending on content on its Steam Deck OLED announcement page. Those are manufacturer claims for the OLED model, not independent measurements and not evidence about a successor’s battery life.
How to compare performance once a confirmed successor exists
Wait for a confirmed retail device, then run both systems through the same games and repeatable gameplay sections. Record each model and software version, and hold the game build, resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, and upscaling configuration constant. Note any unavoidable differences in operating system, driver, or Proton version.

- Choose repeatable workloads. Use the same game build and gameplay section on each device. Record the settings so another reader can understand what was tested.
- Match rendering conditions. Keep resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, and upscaling configuration the same. Report native rendering separately from upscaling or frame-generation results.
- Test both plugged in and on battery. Document the power limit and battery charge state. Keep the results separate rather than blending unlike operating conditions.
- Repeat the runs. Report average frame rate and frame-time consistency across repeatable sections, not only a peak FPS number.
- Record power and endurance. Show power draw alongside performance and test battery runtime at the stated settings. A higher frame rate achieved with a higher power limit is not, by itself, evidence of better efficiency.
- Measure the whole handheld experience. State the method used for fan noise and surface or internal temperatures; compare screen resolution, refresh behavior, and image quality; and note compatibility or shader-compilation behavior in the selected games.
Compare more than frame rates
If both devices are real purchase options, use independent measurements for performance and battery life, and official sources for specifications and compatibility policy. Compare them across the factors that affect whether a handheld is a better fit:
- Sustained performance at matched power: distinguish a lasting improvement from a brief peak or a result obtained at a higher power limit.
- Battery life at a matched workload: compare the same games and settings, and identify whether testing was plugged in or on battery.
- Display: consider resolution, refresh behavior, and image quality alongside the published panel specifications.
- Comfort and controls: compare weight, ergonomics, and input layout using the specific models being considered.
- Compatibility and software support: check official compatibility information and document the software versions used in tests.
- Storage and upgradeability: compare published configurations and supported upgrade options rather than assuming they match.
- Price and availability: verify current local listings when making a purchase decision; neither a rumor nor a comparison result establishes what will be available in a reader’s region.
How to read future Steam Deck 2 claims
Separate claims into three categories: official specifications from Valve or AMD; manufacturer estimates, such as battery-life claims; and independent results from retail hardware. Keep rumor reporting visibly labeled as rumor. For any performance figure, look for the exact device, game, software versions, settings, power conditions, and measurement method. Without those details, an FPS number or percentage uplift is not a meaningful apples-to-apples comparison.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
