Consider a dedicated small-satellite launch when precise deployment, mission timing or special payload accommodations are worth more to you than the higher cost. The right comparison is between quotes for the same spacecraft, orbit and services—not a headline price or price per kilogram.
First, distinguish the two kinds of “dedicated” launch
NASA defines a rideshare as a launch carrying multiple payloads, where a primary spacecraft may set mission requirements and secondary payloads use available capacity. NASA also uses “dedicated rideshare” for a manifest made up entirely of small satellites. SpaceX’s Transporter missions are in this latter category: they are rideshare launches, not a customer-exclusive launch.

A dedicated small-launch vehicle, by contrast, is procured for a customer’s mission. NASA describes these launches as a way to pursue tailored access, potentially faster scheduling, multiple deployment destinations or special accommodations. That control comes with tradeoffs: smaller manifests, lower launch frequency and significantly higher price points than rideshare options.

What published price and capacity figures tell you
NASA’s Small Spacecraft Technology State of the Art 2026 launch chapter reports a SpaceX Transporter starting price of $350,000 for approximately 50 kg and describes its launch cadence as high. Treat that as a published entry point, not an all-in price for your mission. Integration, interfaces, services, orbit and customer-specific conditions can affect the final quote.

There is no directly comparable current Electron price established in the sources cited here. Nor do the published payload figures make a like-for-like cost comparison:
| Measure | Published information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SpaceX Transporter price | Starts at $350,000 for approximately 50 kg, as reported by NASA’s 2026 launch chapter. | A starting price, not a complete mission quote. |
| Electron payload to LEO | Rocket Lab’s Electron page lists 300 kg to LEO. | Provider-published performance; not a guarantee for a particular mission. |
| Electron performance to LEO | NASA’s 2026 launch chapter lists 200 kg. | NASA and Rocket Lab report different figures and do not reconcile them; assumptions or configurations may differ. |
| Electron launch price | Not stated in the cited sources. | Request a current, mission-specific quote. |
Because those capacity figures come from different publishers and are not reconciled, do not treat them as equivalent payload guarantees or use them to calculate a definitive price-per-kilogram winner.

Compare the mission requirements that change the answer
Orbit and deployment precision
Write down the required altitude, inclination, orbital plane and deployment sequence. If the orbit offered by a Transporter manifest works for your spacecraft, rideshare may fit. If the mission needs a specific or unusual placement, consider a dedicated launch or an additional orbital-transfer service.

Rocket Lab says Electron’s kick stage supports precise and unique orbits, deployment across multiple planes or inclinations, higher-altitude deployment and multiple trajectory changes. These are provider-described capabilities, not a promise that every requested orbit or deployment is available for every mission.

Readiness, timing and delay impact
Start with the date your spacecraft will actually be flight-ready, then determine how much control the mission needs over launch timing and what a delay would cost. NASA says dedicated small-launch vehicles may offer faster scheduling, but also notes their lower launch frequency. A marketed schedule should not be assumed to be a guaranteed launch date.
Total mission cost and service scope
Ask for quotes using the same spacecraft, target orbit, interface and service scope. Include integration and any required deployment or orbit-transfer services. The Transporter starting price is an entry reference; it does not establish your all-in cost, and the cited sources do not provide a directly comparable Electron price.

Payload fit and special accommodations
Check more than mass. Confirm dimensions, interface, environmental constraints and deployment hardware, as well as any special handling needs—for example, purge or late battery charging. NASA says such accommodations are generally unavailable on rideshare missions, although they may sometimes be included as standard or offered at extra cost. Ask what is supported for the specific manifest and contract.
Integration ownership
NASA describes integration as work involving the launch provider, spacecraft manufacturer, customer, launch range and sometimes a broker or integrator. Before comparing headline prices, establish who owns each interface, verification task and schedule dependency. A low launch price does not resolve an unclear division of integration responsibilities.

NASA’s schedule records R5 S10 launching on SpaceX Transporter-16 on March 30, 2026, and R5 S9 on Transporter-17 on July 7, 2026. It also records a DiskSat launch aboard Rocket Lab Electron on December 18, 2025. These examples show both service types in use; they do not establish that one is universally better or prove comparative reliability.
A practical way to make the decision
- Define the mission: Specify orbit, deployment sequence, spacecraft dimensions and mass, environmental needs, and the date the spacecraft will be flight-ready.
- Test rideshare fit: Compare those requirements with the available Transporter manifest, including orbit, timing, interface and accommodation limits.
- Identify what rideshare cannot satisfy: Decide whether any gap—such as a precise deployment, special handling or timing requirement—can be addressed by a service add-on or requires a dedicated launch.
- Request comparable quotes: Ask providers or a qualified integrator to price the same spacecraft, orbit and service scope, and clarify integration responsibilities and schedule assumptions.
- Weigh the mission value: Choose rideshare when its orbit, timing and integration conditions work. Evaluate a dedicated vehicle when the mission-specific control or accommodation is worth the additional cost.
NASA summarizes the dedicated-launch case this way: “Flying a spacecraft as a dedicated payload is the best method of ascent for missions that need a specific orbit, near full utilization of available launch vehicle performance, interplanetary trajectories, precisely timed rendezvous, or special environmental considerations.” NASA’s same 2026 report states: “The trade-off is higher cost: dedicated launches have smaller manifests, lower launch frequency, and significantly higher price points compared to rideshare options.”
