STRANGER THAN HEAVEN follows Makoto Daito across five Japanese cities and eras, from 1915 to 1965. SEGA describes its setting as a “Japan that might have been”: an imagined version of the country inspired by real places and periods, not a documented reconstruction of historical events.
What is STRANGER THAN HEAVEN about?
The story begins with Makoto Daito, born in San Francisco to an American father and a Japanese mother. According to SEGA’s official synopsis, he is treated as an outcast because of his appearance and loses his parents when he is young. In 1915, he sneaks aboard a ship bound for Japan, his mother’s homeland, hoping to find a place where he belongs.

On the voyage, Makoto meets Orpheus, a smuggler, and Yu Shinjo, another boy of mixed heritage who also wants to begin again in Japan. Xbox’s May 6, 2026 recap describes Yu as becoming Makoto’s friend and rival. In Kokura, Makoto becomes involved in the city’s underworld, while Orpheus recognizes his musical ability.
The announced story spans fifty years. Its official materials establish the broad arc, but do not disclose the complete plot or ending.

How music and show business fit Makoto’s story
Music becomes more than a talent Makoto discovers early in the story. SEGA’s official materials and Xbox’s coverage describe it as an important part of his later life, alongside show business. Game Director Mikinobu Abe told Xbox Wire: “Makoto has a keen ability to find the music in everyday life, memorizing the sounds as ideas for future compositions.”
Xbox Wire’s September 23, 2026 cast article describes Makoto taking an active role in touring performances: choosing setlists, arranging the band, assigning performers, and designing stage productions. That makes performance one of the ways the story connects Makoto’s personal journey with the changing places and eras he moves through.

The five announced eras and cities
SEGA’s setting overview and Xbox’s product page list five city-and-year pairings in chronological order. The locations are story settings; the list does not establish that the events depicted in the game happened there.
| Year | Announced setting | What official materials say |
|---|---|---|
| 1915 | Kokura, Fukuoka | The initial Japan setting, where Makoto and Yu begin building lives. Xbox’s recap places Makoto’s early musical discovery in this part of the story. |
| 1929 | Kure, Hiroshima | SEGA describes the setting as a naval shipyard city with organized-crime influence. |
| 1943 | Minami, Osaka | One of the five announced settings; official materials do not provide a detailed historical account of its game depiction. |
| 1951 | Atami, Shizuoka | One of the five announced settings; official materials do not provide a detailed historical account of its game depiction. |
| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo | The final announced era-and-city pairing. |
SEGA characterizes 1915 Kokura as a laboring industrial city with a major steelworks. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the game’s setting, not a substitute for an independently sourced history of the real city.

Is STRANGER THAN HEAVEN based on real history?
The game uses real-world place names and dates, but its official framing is fictionalized. SEGA calls the locations places “inspired by” Japan’s past and describes the setting as a “Japan that might have been.” That points to historical inspiration, not a claim that the story faithfully recreates actual events.
The chronology includes wartime and postwar years, but the cited official game materials do not provide a sourced account of national events for each period. They also do not establish that the fictional characters, criminal networks, or plot reproduce real people or organizations. Treat the announced history as context for the game’s imagined setting, rather than as a historical guide.
