The best solar technology is the one that fits the site and delivers the strongest project-specific value—not necessarily the panel with the highest efficiency or wattage. Compare usable roof or site area, modeled annual generation, installed cost, durability and warranties, then account for conditions such as heat, shade, mounting geometry and reflected light. Crystalline silicon is a sensible starting point for many projects; thin-film or specialized module designs may suit particular constraints.

Start with the site, not the panel label

Before comparing technologies, identify what the installation must accomplish and what limits it. A home with a small usable roof may prioritize power per unit of area. A commercial project may need to address a large roof, electrical design, procurement requirements or building integration. Neither case can be judged from a module’s efficiency or advertised wattage alone.

  • Available area: Record usable roof or ground area, obstructions, roof geometry and any loading constraints.
  • Production goal: Consider the energy the property needs and whether the proposed system is intended to offset some or all of that use.
  • Site conditions: Note location, orientation, shade, expected module temperature, mounting arrangement and, for bifacial modules, the surface and space behind the panels.
  • Project constraints: Include appearance, flexibility, building integration, procurement and electrical-design needs.

These details determine which options deserve a closer comparison. DOE describes silicon solar cells as combining “high efficiency, low cost, and long lifetime,” but that broad description is not a guarantee about any individual product or proposal. U.S. Department of Energy, Solar Energy Guide for Homebuilders.

Know what kind of technology you are comparing

Solar-panel terminology can refer to different levels of design. Monocrystalline and polycrystalline describe silicon cell structures; thin-film describes a different material approach. PERC, TOPCon, IBC and SHJ are cell architectures within crystalline silicon, not separate semiconductor families. Bifacial describes a module’s ability to collect light from both sides, not a material family.

Option What it means What to compare
Monocrystalline silicon Cells use a single-crystal silicon structure. Current module efficiency, power rating, dimensions, warranty, price and modeled system yield.
Polycrystalline silicon Cells use multiple crystal structures. The same product and system measures as for monocrystalline; check whether a current proposal actually offers a meaningful cost difference.
Thin-film PV One or more absorber layers are deposited on a support such as glass, plastic or metal. Cadmium telluride (CdTe) and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) are market categories identified by DOE. Specific module efficiency, form factor, application fit, durability and installed-system cost.
Bifacial modules Modules collect light on both their front and rear sides, including reflected light from the surface behind them. Mounting height and geometry, rear-side exposure, surface reflectance and the project’s modeled energy yield.
PERC, TOPCon, IBC and SHJ Cell architectures used within crystalline silicon. Actual module specifications, degradation and warranty terms, supplier evidence and project economics.

DOE’s primer describes monocrystalline silicon as more efficient than polycrystalline in its broad comparison and notes that polycrystalline silicon historically cost less to manufacture. Those are general and historical distinctions, not proof that every current monocrystalline module outperforms every alternative or that a polycrystalline bid will have a lower installed cost. DOE, PV Cells 101: A Primer on the Solar Photovoltaic Cell.

Thin-film products should not be treated as one uniform option: materials and durability considerations differ. Flexibility or a more uniform appearance may make some implementations useful for particular applications, but compare the actual product rather than assuming those characteristics apply to all thin-film modules. DOE, Solar Photovoltaic Cell Basics.

Use efficiency to evaluate space—not to predict the whole project

Module efficiency measures the share of incident solar energy converted to electricity under specified test conditions. It helps estimate how much rated capacity may fit in a given area, but it does not tell you how much electricity a complete installation will generate over a year. System output also depends on site conditions and design, including temperature, shade, dirt, wavelength and mounting geometry. DOE’s PV Cells 101 primer and its Solar Photovoltaic Performance and Efficiency Basics explain these distinctions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep reported figures in their proper context. DOE’s 2019 primer said the best commercial panels had efficiencies of 18% to 22%; that is dated context, not a specification for every current product. A separate DOE research-directions article reported research-cell records of 22.1% for thin-film, 25% for monocrystalline silicon and above 20% for polycrystalline silicon in 2020. Research-cell records are not typical commercial-module ratings. DOE, PV Cells 101, Part 2: Solar Photovoltaic Cell Research Directions.

Likewise, DOE’s 2019 statement that about 95% of solar panels on the market used monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon is a historical market-context figure—not a verified 2026 market share. DOE’s 2019 primer.

Compare proposals on the same project assumptions

Ask installers or project developers to use consistent assumptions so differences in the resulting estimates reflect the designs, not mismatched inputs. Review the module datasheet and the system model together.

  1. Check the module: Compare manufacturer and model, rated power, dimensions, efficiency, product and performance warranties, and documented degradation terms.
  2. Check the system design: Review proposed module count, usable area, orientation, mounting, inverter and electrical design, and how the design treats shade and temperature.
  3. Compare energy estimates: Request modeled annual generation in kWh based on the same location, consumption assumptions and site information. For bifacial designs, ask how rear-side exposure and surface reflectance are represented.
  4. Compare economics: Use comparable installed-cost scopes and assumptions. Check what equipment, labor, service and replacement assumptions are included, and use the same applicable tariff or incentive inputs.
  5. Review durability and support: Compare warranty language, degradation evidence, environmental ratings and supplier support rather than relying on a technology label or a single lifespan claim.

DOE says silicon modules are expected to last at least 25 years while still producing more than 80% of their original power. This is general guidance from 2015, not a warranty for a particular module; use the product’s actual warranty and degradation terms when comparing bids. DOE, Solar Energy Guide for Homebuilders.

Account for home and commercial differences

For a home

Start with roof area, orientation, shading and household electricity use. If space is tight, compare how much rated capacity each proposal fits in the usable area, then weigh the modeled generation against installed cost and warranty terms. If the roof needs replacement or has unusual geometry, include that constraint in the design comparison instead of evaluating modules in isolation.

For a commercial property

Evaluate the project against the building’s roof or site, electrical design, procurement needs and energy-use assumptions. Large roof area does not by itself make a particular module technology preferable: access, roof loading, shading, mounting, service requirements and the project’s economics still matter. Where building-integrated PV is considered for appearance or integration, DOE notes it can offer aesthetic choices but typically costs more and generates less per same area than traditional PV. DOE, Solar Energy Guide for Homebuilders.

Use benchmarks only as context. DOE’s 2025 representative residential system is specified as 8 kWdc, with 400 W per module and 20.4% module efficiency. It is a benchmark description, not a market average, a recommended home system size or a commercial-system estimate. DOE publishes benchmarks for different sectors; compare a project with the sector-appropriate assumptions rather than treating a residential benchmark as a commercial quote. DOE, Solar Photovoltaic System Cost Benchmarks.

A practical shortlist decision

  • Consider crystalline silicon first when conventional module formats and a broad comparison of product-level specifications suit the site.
  • Consider thin-film when a specific product’s form factor, appearance or application fit addresses a real project constraint; assess its own performance and durability evidence.
  • Consider bifacial modules only when the design gives the rear side useful light exposure and the yield model accounts for the actual mounting and surrounding surfaces.
  • Compare silicon architectures by product evidence rather than assuming PERC, TOPCon, IBC or SHJ is automatically best. DOE’s 2021 Solar Futures Study is useful for development history, not proof of which architecture leads the market in 2026. DOE, Solar Futures Study and DOE, Photovoltaic Cell and Module Design.

Current market share, live product specifications, local installed prices and the leading cell architecture are not established by these dated DOE references. Base a decision on current manufacturer datasheets, relevant independent test data and location-specific proposals—not historical market figures or records from research cells.
