Check the exact market terms, the evidence source they name, the result’s status, and the deadline for using the platform’s stated procedure.
First, check whether the result is final
A market can show an outcome before it is fully settled. A proposed outcome, a pending determination, and a final settlement are different states; the platform’s status label and rules should tell you which applies. Do not assume that a displayed result is final—or that a delay means it is wrong.

The contract matters more than a market title or short summary. Kalshi says the contract specifies the outcome criteria and the source used to verify them, and cautions that a rules summary is not the complete set of rules. See its Market Rules and Summary and Rules Summary.

Polymarket’s Help Center says its markets use UMA’s Optimistic Oracle for resolution. Once an outcome is proposed, a two-hour challenge period begins. If you disagree with the proposal, the Help Center directs you to the dispute link in the market’s Rules section. If a proposal is not approved, it enters UMA’s dispute-resolution process. The two-hour period is the stated challenge window, not a promise about how long the entire dispute will take or what the final result will be.

Polymarket also says it is non-custodial and cannot alter or reverse market resolutions. Consult the current instructions on how markets are disputed and how prediction markets are resolved.
How a settlement question works on Kalshi
Kalshi says it determines outcomes according to each contract’s terms and the information from its named verification source. Its Help Center says this can take from one hour to more than twelve hours after a market closes, often depending on when the source agency publishes data. The displayed close time may therefore differ from the determination time. These are timing descriptions in Kalshi’s Market Outcomes and Market FAQs, not a guaranteed deadline for every market.

If you believe a market is ready to settle, Kalshi describes a Request to Settle feature through the market interface. The markets team reviews those requests. The feature is a way to ask for settlement review; the cited guidance does not establish it as a general appeal right after a final determination. See Request to Settle Market.

What to check before challenging or requesting review
- Read the full contract. Identify the exact event, threshold, wording, or condition that determines YES or NO—not just the market title or summary.
- Find the controlling source. Check which source the contract names and whether it specifies a backup source.
- Check timing rules. Look for the relevant date, time zone, publication cutoff, and any provision for later data or corrections.
- Confirm the result’s status and deadline. Establish whether it is proposed, pending, or final, then follow the platform’s current instructions and any challenge window.
- Preserve relevant evidence. Keep the contract wording and the source material, including when it was published and whether it was later corrected or updated.
When you use the stated route, explain how the evidence relates to the contract’s wording. A challenge or review request does not guarantee that the platform or oracle will adopt your interpretation or change the result.
