How to Compare Small-Business Checking Accounts, Fees, and Payment Features

A practical way to compare business checking: model fees against real activity, then check payment options, access, eligibility, and FDIC ownership rules.

To compare small-business checking accounts, use your business’s typical balances, transaction volume, cash deposits, and payment needs—not the advertised monthly fee alone. Estimate what each account would cost after waivers and overage charges, then compare payment options, access, eligibility, and how deposits are treated for FDIC insurance. The account figures below are provider-published examples accessed October 4, 2026, not a ranking; verify current terms before applying.

How do I compare small-business checking accounts, fees, and payment features?

Use the same representative month and business profile for every account. A low monthly fee can be outweighed by transaction overages, cash-processing charges, or paid payment services. First model the account’s cost against your actual activity; then compare operational fit and eligibility.

  1. Count normal activity. For a typical month, list deposits and deposited items, checks, ATM transactions, point-of-sale debit purchases, ACH credits and debits, wires, and cash deposits. Use each bank’s definition of a counted transaction; definitions differ.
  2. Record the fee and waiver rules. Note the monthly maintenance fee, the balance or activity test that waives it, when and how the test is measured, and whether linked balances or a banking relationship count.
  3. Price activity above the allowance. Compare included transactions and cash-deposit limits with your forecast. Apply the disclosed overage price to expected excess activity, and identify separate charges for payment channels or services.
  4. Compare payment features. Check ACH, bill pay, domestic and international wires, mobile check deposit, cash-deposit channels, payment-processing links, and expedited or same-day options. Record free quantities, caps, and per-payment fees.
  5. Check access and day-to-day administration. Consider branch and ATM availability, cash handling, mobile and online tools, customer support, user permissions, alerts, and bookkeeping or payroll workflows.
  6. Confirm eligibility and ownership. Verify that the business and owners qualify. For FDIC insurance, legal ownership and account titling affect how deposits are aggregated.

A planning formula is: expected monthly account cost = monthly maintenance fee after any waiver + transaction overage charges + cash-processing charges + expected wire, expedited-payment, and service fees. It is an estimate, not a quote; include only charges that apply under the bank’s current disclosures.

Compare the fee mechanics, not just the monthly price

These examples illustrate why account tiers and fee rules matter. They are not directly interchangeable: fee periods, transaction definitions, geography, and eligibility can differ. Which payment features should you check?

ACH and bill pay

Find out whether incoming credits, outgoing vendor payments, payroll, and ACH debit activity are included. Check whether online bill pay is included, what the bank counts as a payment, and whether expedited or same-day delivery costs extra. Capital One notes that expedited ACH options may carry an additional charge.

Wires

Card and app payments from customers

A checking account is not the same as merchant processing. If customers pay by card or app, compare the acceptance service separately: the FDIC says payment-service costs and terms vary, and mobile apps can have fees and limits on when funds are available. FDIC: Your Business, Your Deposits

How does FDIC insurance apply to business deposits?

The standard FDIC insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The ownership category and legal account owner matter; opening multiple checking accounts at the same bank does not automatically multiply coverage. FDIC: Understanding Deposit Insurance

  • Sole proprietorship: The FDIC generally treats the business’s deposits as the owner’s single-account deposits and combines them with the owner’s other deposits in that category at the same bank.
  • Qualifying corporation, partnership, or unincorporated association: Deposits may be insured under the business-entity category, generally up to $250,000 for the entity at one insured bank, subject to FDIC requirements.

Check the FDIC’s rules against the business’s actual legal structure and account title rather than assuming a business account has a separate coverage limit. The FDIC’s business-deposit guidance explains how payment choices and business deposits fit together: Your Business, Your Deposits.
